  • I review, breakdown and explain True Detective Night Country. I discuss the season 4 finale, episode 6 and the theory around if Navarro was dead or alive during the ending. I answer if she was a ghost or if she was actually alongside Liz after she walked out onto the Ice. I react to the most common theories and provide a conclusion on what I think happened and what it meant.

      I think she's alive too her name is symbolic of ad u said moving on and living. She just wanted to leave a piece of how she remembered them ie the sons bear the SpongeBob Toothbrush. As these items meant something to the owners represents that she sees them even when they don't see her. She doesn't need to die for that to be the case

    I believe that Evangeline’s walk out onto the ice is a symbolic death….. leaving Ennis behind, leaving the trauma of all that she had endured in the past, to finally rediscover her true nature out on the baron ice….perhaps a “40 days in the desert” analogy, except it is a snowy, icy landscape…as someone mentioned in a previous comment, she walked into the light, not the darkness……a beautiful tribute to her indigenous name….

    I think Evangeline is still alive. She ventured into the snow to (maybe) face her demons and do some soul searching. Also, now that she has discovered her true name, “Siqinnaatchiaq” which means, “the return of the sun after the long darkness,” it has given her a since of hope and strength to move on.

  • @gerik.979
    @gerik.979 3 місяці тому +42

    I think she's alive. If one looks closely, she is walking towards the sun (we see a small view of it) to see if her name's meaning was true. It was because when we see her with Liz, the camera shot divides the two with Liz at peace and Navarro having the sun rising in her direction. I want to know what book Liz was reading!
    The mug Pete brought to Liz had "Hawaii" on it. She deliberately turned it around to throw the two investigators off as if to say Navarro was there. I think Navarro is in another part of Alaska because of the clothes they had on in the end plus the scenery.

    I liked the season but I really think they had an obligation to answer the question of the tongue since it was the weird hook that drew us in to this whole mystery. I expected to know clearly by the end of the story who kept it and who put that there. I get that it's hard to write a narrative in which there are supernatural and physical explanations that dovetail into one another but it's not impossible. They ran tests on this tongue, it physically existed, it had to get there some way. It just feels like a setup that they never figured out how to properly pay off. Emotional payoff isn't enough, a mystery like this has to be tight and plausible with both a supernatural and rational explanation for True Detective. The scene of what happened to the scientists walked that line perfectly, and I expected a similar scene for the tongue. In the end what we got was "who knows, that's not our story," but it is the author of the show's story, and it needed something more.

    • @bryansmith5727
      @bryansmith5727 3 місяці тому +2

      He didn't see Navarro, he saw Annie. Navarro saw Clark. If time is a flat circle, then Navarro saw Clark through the 5th dimension, similar to what happened to Matthew McConaughey's character at the end of Interstellar. It even showed a flash of light when her vision stopped and she went back to her "own time". She happened to be in the kitchen area and she had a brief vision of what happened there. Annie warned Clark that the other women were coming so her murder could be solved.

    I agree, I think she is alive too. In her journey, she came to a resolution with the spirits that she first thought were trying to take her, and then to find out they only told her the name. Plus that hand reaching out to her was not her mother's, because we do not see any tattoos on her hands in the flashbacks. Is this the "she" spirit connecting with Navarro? Also, on the ice, she is not walking toward the open ocean, like her sister did, she is walking across a bay with hills on the other side. I believe now she is free to roam and help others and the spirits. They do mention that others have reported sighting of her (unless they are all seeing her ghost). Also, not sure if this is important or not, but if she did drown, her ghost was not leaving wet footprints on the deck like her sister's ghost was.

    Theory: the show insists that "time is a flat circle" and that's why the characters sometimes see dead people. Well, if time IS a flat circle wouldn't the characters sometimes also see other characters who AREN'T dead yet, just looping like an echo? Maybe the Navarro on the porch is just a time echo and she is still alive, somewhere out there, but 'some part of her will always be in Ennis'.

    • @ashley.taylor174
      @ashley.taylor174 3 місяці тому +2

      That’s what I was thinking too. I think Liz and Navarro were at the same place but at different times, hence the reason why they did not acknowledge each other. Navarro might’ve entered a time loop where she can be around the dead and lost loved ones but also be around the living. She was able to leave behind the SpongeBob toothbrush and the one eyed polar bear toy and video of Clark on the cellphone at different times.

    My take also was that she was alive. Clearing out of her house seems like a very deliberate act, of someone who is starting a new life. I also think the scene where we see Liz and Evangeline at the end, well this wasn't Liz's house, so maybe it was Evangeline's? Also everyone else who walked out onto the ice was found dead. Evangeline wasn't, therefore I think she's not dead. I think she simply left her old life and her pain behind in Ennis and walked out in search of the sun, and hopefully found a better life.

If she was walking off to die, why clean out her resistance? Navarro walked off and appeared to disappear into the light while Travis, Julie etc… seemed to walk off and disappear into darkness. In the end scene the color of Danvers clothing can be seen as she sits down, Navarro is in solid black. I was surprised when i saw that some people thought she had died in the end. The scene with Danvers and Evangeline on the porch in the end I just took as Danvers visiting E after E settled off the grid. The 2 of them on the porch looked at peace both with each other as well as with their surroundings and within their lives. Danvers was keeping E's secret by not telling the investigators about her whereabouts. I would also argue that, even if E did die in the end, she would still be at peace. Both endings land with her being at peace. It would be sad for the audience but not for her.

    I think she died. Liz told Evangeline if she goes off into the ice to come back and she did. The ending is her coming back in spirit form. Your thumbnail...the scene from the inside of the house showing Liz through the closed window and Evangeline through the open door and symbolizes Liz is still here on physical plane but Evangeline is in the spirit world. Windows and doors are both liminal spaces but an open door shows freedom to move between worlds. I also think that Evangeline was Sedna, come to right the wrongs that were done to her people. She came and did what she needed to do and left.

    I enjoyed this season but probably because I didn't set expectation of anything matching season 1. I am also not a fan of ambiguous endings, especially with regards to main characters that you connect with (and I loved Evangeline). I would like to believe that she is still alive. The empty house, different clothes at the end and her overall shift in attitude. I also think the meaning of her name (Return of the sun after the long darkness) could apply to her life and breaking the family history of madness/suicide.

RE Evangeline, I agree with you that I honestly believed she survived & decided to leave town as they did solve Both cases and that she and Liz became closer & actual friends (versus frenemies) After Evangeline saved Liz's life in the last episode. So I think she was Alive while standing on the right side of Liz's deck with the pretty view in the last scene, as Also her having gotten the meaning of her Inuit name and that it means as I recall the the light coming back after long darkness I agree that's a Positive thing & so she too would have found it to be positive& encouraging to go forward & live her life elsewhere.😊

    i liked Night Country...but it wasn't well executed. The show really should have just stood on its own rather than be a "True Detective." What I decided in the end is that there absolutely is a supernatural element and that Ennis is absolutely haunted. Is Evangaline alive? In a manner, yes. I think she walked out onto the ice, into the waters and lives on as one of the ghosts of Ennis. Her arc is closed and she moved on. But did the show successfully communicate that? Not really. The show had interesting concepts and its heart in the right place, it just didn't weave the threads together.

    perhaps she walked out onto the ice and offered herself to sedna and Sedna didn't want her?

    This explanation was still a bit superficial. You are not consediring the inuit culture and their belive system as part of the story.
    You must understand that Navarro is actually looking for connection with her own inuit culture. She cares a lot for the women of her town. Her famlily curse turned out to be a gift, as she can visit the night country. It's not until she learns her real unuit name that everything clicks for her. Her leavig the grid is just a representation of how she finally has embraced her roll in her community( she is now a Shamman and will live in the caves) and her gift (she is a bridge between the living and the dead).
    Now, sice the series is grounded in reality, somethings are better to be left unexplain. But the clues and hints are there.

I do believe she lives in the cross between the living and ghost realm. When Liz played the tape of the scientist's confession, did you notice that his clothes were clean? Both. Russ and that scientist stated that time is a loop (don't have the exact phrase). I believe that Navarro was able to enter that stream at will at any time. This is why she was able to get the confession and be seen by people at various times.
