I do love the M3AS and the M3 on the long island Railroad which is 100 percent true. The 9As is definitely gonna happen on the Harlem and the Hudson lines. The M9S is definitely completed on the Long Island railroad.

first of all, i am extremely sorry for this late reply, but the answer to your question is that Metro-North uses a type of signaling system similar to CBTC on the subway that allows them to run trains this close to each other. Again, sorry for the late reply.

One is switching tracks and the other one is probably staying
Restricted Speed rule, plus cab signaling and PTC. We do it on freight trains too
