  • Contrary to the narrative some hold that America is in decline, many towns and cities are experiencing a rebirth. James Fallows, of The Atlantic magazine, and his wife, Deborah, traveled the country, stopping in one small town after another, to witness the forces of entrepreneurship and creativity that are driving an American renewal. They've written a book, "Our Towns," and talked with correspondent Lee Cowan about the creativity, compassion and generosity of small town America that are the driving forces behind a nation remaking itself. Cowan also talked with small business owners (like Duluth, Minn., craft brewers Laura Mullen and Bryon Tonnis) and Greenville, S.C., Mayor Knox White on what helped turn around their communities.

Disagree strongly with the closing statement: The country has indeed suffered profoundly and has lost much of "what it made it great to begin with" . Is the spirit alive to recover? Yes

That billboard was like 40-50 years ago, not 10-20, lady. What are you talking about?

What is interesting to me in this story is what I did not see.

The old industries are gone or on a lifeline, why does not matter. Holding onto the past means you will become the past.

So we just accept the fact our politicians robbed the American people be signing free trade agreements? The rust belt is dying from lack of jobs as well as drug abuse and your answer is people are living in the past.

There tons of jobs just not the old jobs. Change is a must in today's America. Change with the new are die with the old you chose. The government will never help you stop believing they will. I remember the President that said "I am from the government and here to help" and what he ment.

After a strong start reporting on real people, this episode followed up with features that only PC liberals and Hollywood media elitists could love.

Rob R: "Not that the places they visited don't have their troubles... they do". This was meant to be an optimistic piece that focuses on the good, not to insinuate that the place is without problems.

I don't know anyone with the slightest interest in "Social Media Fashion Influencers" or "The Boys in the Band." I don't really mind that I don't either.
