for those in the comments saying she "didnt convey emotion" and they "weren't feeling it," roles in ballet can be interpreted in different ways. i'm a ballet student myself, and i can absolutely see the passion and soul in her dancing. this role is QUEEN of the dryads. queens are often interpreted as regal, not necessarily happy or showy like other beloved roles in ballet. aurora is going to look different than odette, just as the queen of the dryads will look different than juliet, for example. there is no need to bash a dancer, especially an excellent one like melissa hamilton, for their interpretation of a role just because it doesnt look like YOUR favorite ballet role. thank you.
I love how this was danced. The way her leg progressively rises higher to represent a tree taking root and growing…lovely! And the silhouette her fouettés at the end create reminds me of a tree blooming in the spring or summer 🌳 great, nuanced choreography and dancing
She has everything in her locker, both technique and repertoire. That's why Semperoper Ballet negotiated her loan for a year and then extended it to two years, as Principle. She's now back at ROH and taking the lead role in this seasons 'Manon'. Dancers don't get invited to perform with the stars at La Scala and other great companies for nothing Much credit to her, she is a real Ambassador around the World for the in depth talents of Royal Ballet.
Expression comes from the soul, mind and heart......and exhudes through the face, the musicality, the artistry, the expression in the physical movement and the beauty left in the space occupied by the movement. This dancer has it all going on here. Just watching with no critiquing helps us to see and 'feel' this expression going on (the same effect Fonteyn had on viewers). You can do an exceptional performance of technique, just like acrobats, or have a physical facility that 'expresses' beauty without effort, or have a superior dramatic ability - and these talents can be employed without use of any soulful expression going on, and are in action in every ballet company. Expressive artists that dance from the soul are not as common nowadays, but performers like this remind us they're still there.
I always wonder, people say the dancer has no feeling, has no emotion, etc. But take away the face factor. If you were sitting in the Royal Opera House and could not see the face of the dancer, then how would you feel? From that point of view, isn't it more important for the dancer to actually be able to dance and express with their body not their face. But the age have change, with cameras pointed on the dancer's face, does that mean dancers who are expressive facially and pretty will get more recognition than dancers who are technically better and express with their bodies?
+Buibuiopolis Mayor I agree. I don't care about the face - I want to experience the beauty of ballet by the expressiveness of the dancer's body, the arms, the legs, movement, joy and passion! The face cannot give you all of that.
While I do understand your point of view, I find it important that the dancer is expressive with every fiber of their being. The face is part of the body, so I think it must be as expressive as the body. It always just adds that extra bit of human passion, which enhances the performance much more.
I don’t think it’s about the face, take Marianela for instance she exudes emotion and feeling in every move. It’s about the acting ability of a performer, a good actor should be able to express themselves without words, from any angle and without actually facing the audience.
Why are there so many hateful comments about her performance? I'm a dancer and I know that that is a very hard solo and do you think that the dancer would look happier or something? I think she did a great job
Izzy T you aren’t a pro dancer if you think criticising a performance is hateful and we shouldn’t do so because it’s « hard ». We have the right to like or dislike anything.
I think what people didn't like was the lack of expression, I noticed that too even if I did like her performance a lot. With a little bit more emotion her performance would be spectacular (no hate!!)
This comment section annoys me. People are entitled to their opinion and if they think she didn’t display enough emotion, you just have to accept that. Of course the variation is difficult, but as a dancer you are only excellent if you can make something difficult look effortless. And a lot of people seem to live under the impression that just because you aren’t able to do it better you aren’t allowed to critique her. Like, I can’t cook very well but I know if something doesn’t taste good.
A ballet dancer without techniques > get lots of hate comments A ballet dancer with great techniques > get lots of comments of no soul thing hahahaha wtf ppl are always complaining just shut up and watch
@@angelgirl8533 I completely disagree. People pay to observe and are therefore allowed to have opinions on it. You can critise a meal if you didn't like it without being a chef, you can dislike a song without being an esucated producer. As long as the critiscism is respectful I don't regard it as rude personally and think it's quite silly to pass it off as "hate". She is beautiful and has amazing technique, the only thing missing is acting and character. I get that monarchs are supposed to be serious but I think there's a way to display that while at the same time making the performance seem more alive and "dryad"-like
Not to be mean but some people don’t understand how to take in a dancer's whole performance and need it spelled out for them with a big pageant smile. We were never meant to be able to see super closeups of a dancer's face, their entire body is supposed to be taken as one thing, and also-you cannot expect miracles in that she has very little to work with, which is true of most variations. They don’t move the plot forward, the plot pauses for them to dance, thus there’s little ‘acting' in 'character' that is possible, and more just expressing the abstract concept of the characterization through the movement. And not everyone is going to connect to that the same way.
I could hear the box against the stage - was she not landing right or was the shoe not broken in enough? I agree, though. I didn't feel her, though I enjoyed that last section.
I'm a ballet student at the moment and though, I know, it is inappropriate to hear the sound of the pointe shoe hitting against the floor, I found it kind of humanizing.
I don't think it is inappropriate... nowadays everyone uses Gaynors and they are very silent, but with the pointe shoes she had, I think it is unavoidable.
Also it depends a lot where he microphones are placed. If they are rather close to the stage, the pointe noise will be recorded, if they are a little more far it won't be heard through recording.
Why so many disrespectful comments! Oh yes I’m forgetting, because you could all do way better...yeah no I didn’t think so! This was simply beautiful, pure and her technique was sound. You’ve got to take into account the whole ballet and the emotion carried through the whole ballet not just one section so shhh
I admire and ❤️ 😍 love Melissa Hamilton from the Royal Ballet already - - she has beautiful body lines - - and I love at the end when she executes these gorgeous high side développé à la seconde turns. I hope to see M Hamilton - - a Principal dancer soon. Thanks much to @ Royal Opéra Ballet for sharing.
I know people who are ballet dancers themselves know that she is good but I didn't feel her. And I hope people won't start replying to my comment in a hateful way. It's just how I feel about watching this video. There are dancers who can convey their passion even through a video. With Melissa Hamilton I didn't get that.
+Jazillia007 I think it could just be the scene. There are parts of a Ballet where the dancer is required to both dance and act. This did not look like one of them.
+Gabriella de Paula I also was distracted by her concentrated face. I think a dancer is supposed to make something hard look easy and even though her performance was good. Her face shows that it's work.
You people are stupid. She's full of PERSONALITY. Copying other doesnn't make you better in some role. This role she plays its alive and I can feel her beauty in another way (not THE SAME as ever). HER ARMS, HER FEET, HER HANDS... I think you are blind.
I wish the camera had been at a different angle for her Italian fouette at the end, seeing the underside of the tutu took away a bit from the elegance of her performance. But it was danced beautiful regardless
What's wrong with everyone? With such hate against a beautiful performance. But of course you could do so much better...(Sarcastic) Needed to point out the sarcasm as you might not be able to get through your thick skull. Plus saying no offense doesn't take off any offense whatsoever... Lovely Melissa. Amazing work Royal Ballet, my absolute dream company!
I hope so Ava Smith! I turned 13 June 30th and there won't be a day when I don't train to achieve this dream!!! Hopefully we can make it! See you there one day...
The lighting is so weird the giros un the back look like neon purple but somehow darle, and the floor has this weird greenish color. The saturated ciclorama clashes with the dainty flowers of the costumes. I don't understand the idea behind this weird lighting
In my opinion this dancer has wonderful and expressive facial expressions! Her technique is very strong but for this role a bit more of softness and tenderness is required!☺
Can you guys just put yourself in her shoes. In front of that audience, wanting to be perfect. I’m a dancer I know it’s hard. Give her some slack. I bet you would not be able to do that in just like 3 months.
I like her intepretation just fine, it is very regal and suitable for the queen of the dryads. I don't like this version of the choreography, it looks awkward and not as flowing as the russian version, but obviously that is not the dancer's fault.
Super hard fouetté at the end. Good execution but very tense facial expression. Meaning she is not good enough to dance freely yet. This is a soloist role. Guess this is the quality to be expected.
Wow. Please explain to me how you could execute this variation any better. I think you can criticize a dancer's performance with such a technically difficult variation so abruptly when you've won the YAGP or got into the Royal Ballet company like she has.
She is the person whom people are PAYING to watch her dance. Of course the public are entitled to share their opinions. A performance critics can write anything they'd like about a dancer's ability to execute and convey artistic values. That has nothing to do with if someone can dance or not. This is a subjective comment with comparison to all other professional level dancers. Yes, she is far away from many of them who can do this variation at a higher technical and artistic level. This is how arts get reviewed and how dancers get better. Your petty reply with reference to YAGP means you can continue to watch ballet like pony tricks shows instead of learning to appreciate it as the art form it is.
the queen of Amazonkas )) strong, heavy and big)) watch Alina Somova, the Queen of Dryads, magic spirits, with elevation, with 8 Italian fuettes instead of 3 here
Watching Alina Somova's version before this is the worst idea ever. The stark difference between their levels is just too much and it pointed out how heavy, stiff, forced, unhappy and rigid this version is. If you guys are looking for a better version, check out Alina ua-cam.com/video/yI4hN1AiyRQ/v-deo.html Her gracefulness, her elegance, her balance, her extensions, how she seems to be floating in the air, the way she holds her positions instead of falling out of them like this one.....basically she's like the fairy/nymph she's depicting. I couldn't even see Alina's facial expressions most of the time due to the video quality but the feel that she gives off and her dance is just exquisite. But this version? Sorry, no fairy here.
literally who tf asked u to compare them. Alina’s version is beautiful and so is this version. it’s a very hard variation so it’s hard to keep character. This video has nothing to do with Alina so stfu
It seems like she didn't enjoy her dance. No happiness at all on her face. Insteand, a kind of 'oh my god those fucking fouettes Omg it's done thanks god'

Yes exactly!! I 100% agree. I think her interpretation of this variation was perfect
I totally agree! I thought she did a wonderful meaningful job!
That’s very true
Wow! Well said!
I actually really enjoy this piece! The face isn't hidden behind a fake smile. She looked very elegant in my eyes.
I love how this was danced. The way her leg progressively rises higher to represent a tree taking root and growing…lovely! And the silhouette her fouettés at the end create reminds me of a tree blooming in the spring or summer 🌳 great, nuanced choreography and dancing
Beautiful playing from the orchestra as well.

I love her arms. They're so willowy and the way they support the notion that the Queen of the Dryads is an otherwordly creature is amazing.
Those feet. They're almost singing, she uses them so beautifully!
She is so elegant! Wow!

This is the same variation that Melissa Hamilton won YAGP with back in 2007, really interesting to watch both performances!
Wow really? That’s cool!
One of the most beautiful ballets. I love it!

Why are there so many hateful comments about her performance? I'm a dancer and I know that that is a very hard solo and do you think that the dancer would look happier or something? I think she did a great job
Izzy T i also am. 8 think charm is good enough but i don't feel her.
I know its a hard one.

Ivi Kontou she’s playing a queen! Monarchs are not allowed to show emotion in front of anyone, so I think she did amazing.
She has a grace and simplicity that is marvelous.
Absolutely beautiful, especially in her arm movements; loved it! The tutu is gorgeous too.
It honestly looks like its just her dancing on the stage, and I mean in a good way. Plus it looks elegant and lively as well as graceful.
Her tutu😍💗
gorgeous ballerina and gorgeous cello ! As expected from the royal opera :)
HOW BEAUTIFUL
This is amazing. Best i've seen so far.. ❤️❤️❤️

If you can’t take criticism you can’t be called a dancer

WONDERFUL!! MARAVILLOSA! THANK YOU! GREATLY APPRECIATED! BLESSINGS!

it's like she embodied the music herself! such lovely flow! i couldn't do that. mad respect to melissa!!! ( ◜‿◝ )♡

Need to watch this ballet live
this is so enchanting
Absolute elegance, she knows exactly how to break those pointe shoes in a way that highlights her feet!

Yeah, me too
I fell the same. She does many posés to show how good she is, but it just dont fit.

While Melissa Hamilton does have a great many and gorgeous performances in her repertoire, I think she is mostly a competitive dancer.
perfeita, figurino maravilho
Lovely!
just watched mayas 2022 yagp variation of this ballet and damn, indeed maya rlly did so well! nevertheless, melissa slayed this variation amazingly!
I couldn't feel it, but I LOVE the costumes, they all look like flowers when they're behind her while she's dancing, so cute!
🙄
Lovely~!
Adorável, magnifica!!
the music is so beautiful! where do i find this version ?
This tutu 💛
At my studio we are doing a mini Don Quixote and I got queen of the dryads for the second act and might have this variation. Any tips?
Lovely
Melissa Hamilton almost looks like an actual princess!
LOVELY !!!
1:32 can someone tell me the ballet term for this? what is this step called?
Italian fouettes
Royal Opera House, what is the name of the dancer?
it says in the description
You people are stupid. She's full of PERSONALITY. Copying other doesnn't make you better in some role. This role she plays its alive and I can feel her beauty in another way (not THE SAME as ever). HER ARMS, HER FEET, HER HANDS... I think you are blind.
Thank you Beatriz Fernandez
I wish the camera had been at a different angle for her Italian fouette at the end, seeing the underside of the tutu took away a bit from the elegance of her performance. But it was danced beautiful regardless
Promote her to principal please❤

And CC Johnson I didn't get notified of your reply, only Ava's. Thanks for backing me up!
N/A N/A I am 17, so only a little bit too go!! I'll see you! Keep working hard!!!)

新しい世界、ゆっくり楽しみます。
Linda ♥
WOW
In my opinion this dancer has wonderful and expressive facial expressions! Her technique is very strong but for this role a bit more of softness and tenderness is required!☺
💛💛💛
Those sisters can do no wrong but amazing! PWG
wow
That's ecarte?
I noticed it too. That was an odd angle to take in the battement developée a la seconde prior to the half turn into the fouetté.

100% agree with you here Fiona.
Fiona she doesn’t at all look tense! She’s by far better than anyone who preforms this while smiling.
🙌🌸🌸🌸🌸👏👏👏
Bale que lindo quero ser uma ingual ela
I can tell how soft her pointe shoes are, they look like they are about to disintegrate. that or she really likes her shoes soft.
I don't think she closed her fifth at all before her pirouettes. Yikes. Still, gorgeous lines.
Respectfully, shut it and appreciate the variation
Exactly CC Johnson!
Oh i just noticed that.
CC Johnson no, its just that she needs to close fifth at her pirrouttes and its important.
This bothered me too! Nice pirouettes, but they didn't start in 5th at all...they were in some kind of weird parallel position.
how can pol complain about this ?
ñsound of musical chairs
She looks a bit like Audrey Hepburn (he face at least)
a mayara magri no corpo de baile😻😱
???
This is not to criticize Melissa Hamilton but ... IMHO, Alina Somova is *the* Queen of Dryads: ua-cam.com/video/yI4hN1AiyRQ/v-deo.html
Valery Pavlov there is no comparison. Alina is many levels above this performance.
Platel hundred times better
the queen of Amazonkas )) strong, heavy and big)) watch Alina Somova, the Queen of Dryads, magic spirits, with elevation, with 8 Italian fuettes instead of 3 here
Корявенько как то...
Something about her fingers and over exaggerated movements unsettle me and make it slightly uncomfortable to watch
Strained hands.
The italians fouettes all en dedans.. awfulls knees... bad arms.. dont' like.
Watching Alina Somova's version before this is the worst idea ever. literally who tf asked u to compare them.
Bros acting like it’s supposed to be easy
@Balletlover777 no shit but I’d like to see you do better 💀
her movements are too exaggerated . makes me cringe
Your comment kinda makes me cringe.
Haha CC Johnson! That's hilarious lol!!!!
What a nasty comment.
I’m sorry, but that’s the worst Queen of Dryads I’ve ever seen from a professional company.
Lovely
