I'm a historian and made the other video titled "History of the Amhara people"; also wrote a book in Amharic about the history of the Amhara. Your short video is accurate and impressive; many people seem to not understand that Amharas are descendants of the Axumite Agazians who built Axum, and Shoa Amhara is where the Axumite court was established once the northern dominion was destroyed by Gudit. That's why you'll see people coming and saying it's "Tigrayans history not Amhara"; because they have little to no understanding about who the Amharas are.

Wow! That's crazy you just dropped this video...Yesterday I met the owner of my local Ethiopian Restaurant and he broke down the different ethnic groups after I asked him what he was (he's Amhara). He asked me what I was and I told him I'm Jamaican-American 🇯🇲 with respect for my African roots🌍 through the teachings of the Rastas around me and in my family. Then we talked about Shashamane (the Rastafarian community set up by H.I.M. Haile Selassie I, for all African-descendants in the Caribbean). Such a rich history and culture, nuff respect 🇪🇹.

It would be similar to someone saying “I’m from Europe” when the answer based on the context of the conversation requires a more specific answer, like “I’m Irish”. I see a lot of complaints about the involvement of the Amharas in Axumite and Ethiopian history in general. I think this there is a conflict between the way ethnicity in Ethiopia is thought of today compared to what the situation was thousands of years ago. The city of Axum is in modern day Tigray region. Ancient Axumite civilization was centered in modern day Northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. While modern day ethnicities are not very well-developed during that time (there is no evidence of a distinct Amhara or Tigray ethnicity, but there are descriptions of different tribe names in areas that include modern day Tigray and Amhara lands). The Axumite empire definitely extended into modern day Amhara lands. Ge'ez, the language of the ancient Axumites, is closely related to both Tigrinya and Amharic (either as direct descendants or sister languages), yet the two languages don't even show up in written record until just after the fall of Axum. Amharas and Tigrayans (as well as other Eritrean and Ethiopians groups) are all descendants of the Axumites, but developed into distinct ethnic groups along the way, tracing their lineage from smaller tribes that existed during the time of the Axumite state. The first Amharic speaking rulers of Ethiopia came in the late 13th century, with the beginning of the Solomonic dynasty that claimed lineage from the kings of Axum. With the issue of "Amhara rulers," ethnicity is usually closely applied to language. So most Ethiopian rulers from this point on spoke Amharic and ruled over a very multicultural, multilingual, religiously diverse empire. As time went on, the ethnic makeup of the Ethiopian ruling class became increasingly diverse, especially after the Gragn invasion (muslim-christian) and the subsequent expansion of the Oromos in the 16th century. The first emperor of Ethiopia with Oromo ancestry is Iyoas in the 18th century, then came the multiethnic warlords of the "Era of Princes," the Agew Tekle Giorgis, Yohannes IV of Tigray, the Amhara/Oromo Menelik II and Empress Taitu, their multiethnic commanders and advisers, the Oromo Lij Iyasu, the Amhara/Oromo Zewditu, and the Amhara/Oromo Haile Selassie. People even label the Communist Derg as Amhara, but Mengistu was not fully Amhara, nor did he claim to be. In fact, the govt became more diverse, and they were aggressors towards any ethnic group that opposed or were suspected of opposing them, including amharas. Ethiopian history, like all African history, is so diverse and rich and can be viewed from so many angles. And when it comes to ethnicity in Ethiopia, our ancestry are more intertwined then we tend to think.

Why is it whenever Shewa is mentioned about Amharas its always refered to “North” Shewa when Shewa itself is the pinnacle of Amhara history and origins? He defeated every enemy of Ethiopia, never lost a single battle. He defeated all invaders decisively and rose to fame through sheer military strength & skill . Egyptians occupied Massawa & slowly wanted to expand & occupy other parts of Ethiopia. He never let them 1875 Battle of Gundet; annihilated Egyptian invading force,1876 Battle of Gura; destroyed 20,000 invading forces of Egyptian & Europeans advisors with state of the art weapons,1883 English troops destroyed by dervishes. Ask for Ethiopia's help. Alula is sent to deal with the dervishes,1884 Battle of Kufit; destroyed dervish forces that were ravaging Ethiopia's western borders. While Alula is away, England hands Massawa to Italy. Italy slowly expands, Alula declared "the Italians can come & rule in Ethiopia, only if I can rule Italy from Rome. I don't think that is true...... this is how an Amhara person sees himself/herself Human/God's creation/ a child of God Abyssinian/ Ethiopian/ Habesha Amhara Then the region Gonder, Wello, Gojjam, and Shewa. Because we put our national unity ahead of ethnic/ tribe we are not attracted to tribalism and ethnic politics. But some mistakes that as we don't value or treasure our Amhara ethnicity. Ras Alula Engida . Also known as Ras Alula Abbä Neggä "Father of The Morning." . He was governor of Merab Melash (Eritrea). Founder of the city of Asmera, his capital . He defeated every enemy of Ethiopia, never lost a single battle. He defeated all invaders decisively and rose to fame through sheer military strength & skill . Egyptians occupied Massawa & slowly wanted to expand & occupy other parts of Ethiopia. He never let them 1875 Battle of Gundet; annihilated Egyptian invading force,1876 Battle of Gura; destroyed 20,000 invading forces of Egyptian & Europeans advisors with state of the art weapons,1883 English troops destroyed by dervishes. Ask for Ethiopia's help. Alula is sent to deal with the dervishes,1884 Battle of Kufit; destroyed dervish forces that were ravaging Ethiopia's western borders. While Alula is away, England hands Massawa to Italy. Italy slowly expands, Alula declared "the Italians can come & rule in Ethiopia, only if I can rule Italy from Rome. Otherwise, they had no business in Ethiopia & should evacuate every inch of Ethiopia (Massawa included) promptly",1887 Battle of Sahati, Alula comes back from Kufit & fights Italy, 1887 Battle of Dogali, Alula destroys Italian force near Massawa, 1888 Dervishes invade DebreTabor, Alula rushes to Gondar, 1889 Yohaness IV prepares to drive out Italy. But instead rushes to Debre Tabor to help his loyal general Ras Alula, 1889 Battle of Mettema, RasAlula & Yohaness IV destroy dervish forces. Yohaness dies of wounds, 1890 Alula returns to Tigray to discover Italy had occupied his Asmara & rest of Merab/Eritrea, 1896 Battle of Adwa, Alula commands a vanguard army. Kills several invading commanders. During the battle, the Italian general, Barateiri, abandons his troops & runs for his life, Alula is in hot pursuit after the fleeing general. Alula wanted to continue all the way to Massawa, but he had orders to remain put by Minilik. Much of Ethiopia's proudest history from the kingdom of Aksum, Ethiopia never being colonized and much in between is solely Tigrays and Tegaru history. Once Tigray leaves Ethiopia it can never claim this history as much of Ethiopias proudest moments and kingdoms were done by Tigray and Tigray's ancestors. King Yohannes IV sacrificed his life to protect Ethiopia from invaders and many Tegaru sacrificed their life to protect Ethiopia from colonization in countless battles like Adwa. Tigray has sacrificed more than anyone in Ethiopia to protect it. Menelik sold northern parts of Tigray to Italy in the treaties of Wuchale and Feres Mai in 1889 in order to weaken Tigray. To further weaken Tigray he annexed larger swathes of Tigray's fertile lands. Haileselassie brutally suppressed the first Woyane rebellion in 1943 by having the British bomb Tigray over 116 times over the span of 2 weeks beginning on a busy market day and this killed many Tegaru, innocent civilians. After the first Woyane rebellion he banned modern education in Tigray and further annexed more fertile land from Tigray. This allowed him to weaponize starvation (by blocking aid etc) and starve over 100,000 Tegaru to death. Later dictators like the Derg were able to weaponize starvation and starve more than a million Tegaru to death in the 80s. Now Abiy Ahmed is using Ethiopia's notorious action of weaponizing starvation and he has blocked aid, burnt crops, destroyed seeds, ruined soil, and farmland, destroyed food stores, cut off aid routes, and is holding western Tigray alongside our only border to Sudan. Tigray defeated the brutal communist Derg government in the 80s sacrificing over 50,000 of our small minority people in order to liberate the rest of Ethiopia but history has repeated itself and Ethiopia has once again responded to Tigrays sacrifices for it with evil instead of gratitude. Tigray has done much more for Ethiopia than Ethiopia has ever done for Tigray. Tigray will leave Ethiopia with all our lands before this genocide started and everything damaged and every person hurt will be restored and healed using forced reparations that Ethiopia, Amhara, and Eritrea will have to pay until everything is back to the way it was before the genocide began. Tigray will prosper and become a new nation.
Amhara have no claim to Axum the descendants of Axum are Tigrayans and the Tigringya people of Eritrea. Amhara falsely began claiming Axum to validate their Shewan dynasty after the fall of the Agew Zagwe kingdom. Even after Axum Amahara have continued to falsely claim Tigray’s history . It was the ancestors of Tigrayans and Tigrinya people that created GE’EZ and the great Axum kingdom. Amahara’s jealousy and envy for Tigray has lead to them re-writing history and commiting many evils against Tigray especially in the last 200 years . There were former slaves that were interviewed and you can find those interviews through the library of Congress that stated that they were from Morocco, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and several other non west African countries. Yes the majority were from West Africa but there was a small percentage from the north, east, and south as well.
Slave trade was actually done in Ethiopia and was only stopped recently during Haile selassie as a prerequisite to join the UN. Some of those slaves could have been taken to any country in the world even though most slaves stayed in Ethiopia.

Wow! That's crazy you just dropped this video...Yesterday I met the owner of my local Ethiopian Restaurant and he broke down the different ethnic groups after I asked him what he was (he's Amhara).
He asked me what I was and I told him I'm Jamaican-American 🇯🇲 with respect for my African roots🌍 through the teachings of the Rastas around me and in my family. Then we talked about Shashamane (the Rastafarian community set up by H.I.M. Haile Selassie I, for all African-descendants in the Caribbean).

I see a lot of complaints about the involvement of the Amharas in Axumite and Ethiopian history in general. I think this there is a conflict between the way ethnicity in Ethiopia is thought of today compared to what the situation was thousands of years ago.
The city of Axum is in modern day Tigray region. Ancient Axumite civilization was centered in modern day Northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. While modern day ethnicities are not very well-developed during that time (there is no evidence of a distinct Amhara or Tigray ethnicity, but there are descriptions of different tribe names in areas that include modern day Tigray and Amhara lands). The Axumite empire definitely extended into modern day Amhara lands.
Ge'ez, the language of the ancient Axumites, is closely related to both Tigrinya and Amharic (either as direct descendants or sister languages), yet the two languages don't even show up in written record until just after the fall of Axum. Amharas and Tigrayans (as well as other Eritrean and Ethiopians groups) are all descendants of the Axumites, but developed into distinct ethnic groups along the way, tracing their lineage from smaller tribes that existed during the time of the Axumite state.
The first Amharic speaking rulers of Ethiopia came in the late 13th century, with the beginning of the Solomonic dynasty that claimed lineage from the kings of Axum. With the issue of "Amhara rulers," ethnicity is usually closely applied to language. So most Ethiopian rulers from this point on spoke Amharic and ruled over a very multicultural, multilingual, religiously diverse empire. As time went on, the ethnic makeup of the Ethiopian ruling class became increasingly diverse, especially after the Gragn invasion (muslim-christian) and the subsequent expansion of the Oromos in the 16th century.
The first emperor of Ethiopia with Oromo ancestry is Iyoas in the 18th century, then came the multiethnic warlords of the "Era of Princes," the Agew Tekle Giorgis, Yohannes IV of Tigray, the Amhara/Oromo Menelik II and Empress Taitu, their multiethnic commanders and advisers, the Oromo Lij Iyasu, the Amhara/Oromo Zewditu, and the Amhara/Oromo Haile Selassie. People even label the Communist Derg as Amhara, but Mengistu was not fully Amhara, nor did he claim to be. In fact, the govt became more diverse, and they were aggressors towards any ethnic group that opposed or were suspected of opposing them, including amharas. Ethiopian history, like all African history, is so diverse and rich and can be viewed from so many angles. And when it comes to ethnicity in Ethiopia, our ancestry are more intertwined then we tend to think.

Why is it whenever Shewa is mentioned about Amharas its always refered to “North” Shewa when Shewa itself is the pinnacle of Amhara history and origins? Haileselassie brutally suppressed the first Woyane rebellion in 1943 by having the British bomb Tigray over 116 times over the span of 2 weeks beginning on a busy market day and this killed many Tegaru, innocent civilians. After the first Woyane rebellion he banned modern education in Tigray and further annexed more fertile land from Tigray. This allowed him to weaponize starvation (by blocking aid etc) and starve over 100,000 Tegaru to death. Later dictators like the Derg were able to weaponize starvation and starve more than a million Tegaru to death in the 80s. Now Abiy Ahmed is using Ethiopia's notorious action of weaponizing starvation and he has blocked aid, burnt crops, destroyed seeds, ruined soil, and farmland, destroyed food stores, cut off aid routes, and is holding western Tigray alongside our only border to Sudan. Tigray defeated the brutal communist Derg government in the 80s sacrificing over 50,000 of our small minority people in order to liberate the rest of Ethiopia but history has repeated itself and Ethiopia has once again responded to Tigrays sacrifices for it with evil instead of gratitude.
Tigray has done much more for Ethiopia than Ethiopia has ever done for Tigray. Tigray will leave Ethiopia with all our lands before this genocide started and everything damaged and every person hurt will be restored and healed using forced reparations that Ethiopia, Amhara, and Eritrea will have to pay until everything is back to the way it was before the genocide began. Tigray will prosper and become a new nation.

But instead rushes to Debre Tabor to help his loyal general Ras Alula, 1889 Battle of Mettema, RasAlula & Yohaness IV destroy dervish forces. Yohaness dies of wounds, 1890 Alula returns to Tigray to discover Italy had occupied his Asmara & rest of Merab/Eritrea, 1896 Battle of Adwa, Alula commands a vanguard army. Kills several invading commanders. During the battle, the Italian general, Barateiri, abandons his troops & runs for his life, Alula is in hot pursuit after the fleeing general. Alula wanted to continue all the way to Massawa, but he had orders to remain put by Minilik.
Much of Ethiopia's proudest history from the kingdom of Aksum, Ethiopia never being colonized and much in between is solely Tigrays and Tegaru history. Once Tigray leaves Ethiopia it can never claim this history as much of Ethiopias proudest moments and kingdoms were done by Tigray and Tigray's ancestors.
King Yohannes IV sacrificed his life to protect Ethiopia from invaders and many Tegaru sacrificed their life to protect Ethiopia from colonization in countless battles like Adwa. Tigray has sacrificed more than anyone in Ethiopia to protect it.
Menelik sold northern parts of Tigray to Italy in the treaties of Wuchale and Feres Mai in 1889 in order to weaken Tigray. To further weaken Tigray he annexed larger swathes of Tigray's fertile lands. Haileselassie brutally suppressed the first Woyane rebellion in 1943 by having the British bomb Tigray over 116 times over the span of 2 weeks beginning on a busy market day and this killed many Tegaru, innocent civilians. After the first Woyane rebellion he banned modern education in Tigray and further annexed more fertile land from Tigray. This allowed him to weaponize starvation (by blocking aid etc) and starve over 100,000 Tegaru to death. Later dictators like the Derg were able to weaponize starvation and starve more than a million Tegaru to death in the 80s. Now Abiy Ahmed is using Ethiopia's notorious action of weaponizing starvation and he has blocked aid, burnt crops, destroyed seeds, ruined soil, and farmland, destroyed food stores, cut off aid routes, and is holding western Tigray alongside our only border to Sudan. Tigray defeated the brutal communist Derg government in the 80s sacrificing over 50,000 of our small minority people in order to liberate the rest of Ethiopia but history has repeated itself and Ethiopia has once again responded to Tigrays sacrifices for it with evil instead of gratitude.
Tigray has done much more for Ethiopia than Ethiopia has ever done for Tigray. Tigray will leave Ethiopia with all our lands before this genocide started and everything damaged and every person hurt will be restored and healed using forced reparations that Ethiopia, Amhara, and Eritrea will have to pay until everything is back to the way it was before the genocide began. Tigray will prosper and become a new nation.
Amhara have no claim to Axum the descendants of Axum are Tigrayans and the Tigringya people of Eritrea. Amhara falsely began claiming Axum to validate their Shewan dynasty after the fall of the Agew Zagwe kingdom. Even after Axum Amahara have continued to falsely claim Tigray’s history . It was the ancestors of Tigrayans and Tigrinya people that created GE’EZ and the great Axum kingdom. Amahara’s jealousy and envy for Tigray has lead to them re-writing history and commiting many evils against Tigray especially in the last 200 years . Today Amahra are commiting genocide in Tigray but they will eventually face justice at ICC and be condemned by the IC

There were former slaves that were interviewed and you can find those interviews through the library of Congress that stated that they were from Morocco, Madagascar, Ethiopia, and several other non west African countries. Yes the majority were from West Africa but there was a small percentage from the north, east, and south as well.

Slave trade was actually done in Ethiopia and was only stopped recently during Haile selassie as a prerequisite to join the UN. Some of those slaves could have been taken to any country in the world even though most slaves stayed in Ethiopia.

Brother, us Somalis have done some terrible things in the past, but it wasn't a one-sided road. Bantus in Kenya used to kill and torture Somalis as recently as the 1980s and sometimes even today. the story of them coming from Arabia could be true, but they aren't Arabs or genetically Semitic. Arabia was home to many different ethnic groups in the ancient times until the Semites became the majority. The amharas speak a Semitic language but they are the same as other Ethiopians and Eritreans. According to Amhara scholars, the amharas could have been the people of ancient south yemen known as seba. the city of Seba wasn't an Arab city, the inhabitant was the same as the people from the horn of Africa, that explains why amharas also are genetically related to many ethnic groups in the Horn of Africa.
