Players used to wear wool caps like those manufactured by EFF because the material helped them stay fresh under the sun and also shelter and protect their heads on cold weathered nights. I have ordered the New York Knight's featured in the video but also the caps of the1946 Veracruz (México) Azules, the 1939 Hollywood Stars, and my favorite, the 1954 Cangrejeros de Santurce (my birthplace) cap, a Puerto Rican winter ball team that featured Roberto Clemente AND Willie Mays in the outfield (picture that !). Thank You, EFF co-founder (and fellow musician) Jerry Cohen, Blessings to all from San Juan PR.
This was my favorite video by far please do more!! I have a pretty good collection of EFF caps and they have sales all the time so that’s how I got so many. Love the caps, I like them far better than New Era but that’s just my humble opinion.
Thanks for this video, it helped greatly. Was very nervous about ordering as in New Era I’m 7 1/4, but the insight to size up was spot on. Ordered a 7 3/8 Katz hat and the fit was perfect. The Ebbets hats look even more incredible in person.
Crazy how there are almost zero videos about these hats on UA-cam! This video is great and based on watching I ordered the black Fugi, received today. Great hat the quality is on point. Thanks.
That's great to hear - thanks! I've gotten a couple of them now, and am waiting for a restock on some others... really well made caps and a great addition to any cap collection.
I have ordered the St Paul Saints yesterday in size 7 5/8 since I wear 7 1/2 size in a new era 59fifty cap. I can't wait to get it. This could be the first of many caps I order from ebbets field flannels.
Glad to see an EFF cap review. One thing I have found with collecting EFF caps, the soft visor caps run a bit smaller than the standard visor caps. Something to keep in mind for any future purchases. Great video as always!
Thanks... one other visor note which I shared briefly at the end of the video, they really don't hold a curve for very long. If you have a collection of them I'm curious if that has been your experience as well.
Hey i’m looking for my first vintage baseball cap, is the length between soft and standard visor pretty significant? Length-wise, i’m looking for cap damon wore in this video ua-cam.com/video/F_NB4BQy8Ng/v-deo.html. Is that short or standard visor? Looks similar with one of the EFF vintage collection.
That is my experience too - the first hat I got from them was a soft brim from them in my usual size and it's more snug than their regular-style brim in the same size
Sure thing - I've seen your Spring Robins cap and it turned out great! I appreciate your support, and look forward to other designs you're doing for Clink too!
Great video as always Doug. I've been collecting since 2010 and have about 120 or so 5950's, almost all made in the US. With Derby closing, EFF seems like the future for those of us that collect caps. You brought up a good point about price point though. 50 is a bit steep for a cap.
Thank you... and another viewer reminded me that EFF has sales quite frequently - even when I grabbed screenshots for this video, every single cap was on sale for $39 or less.
They are easy to collect. They have many sales. Also you can buy 3 and get a cap brush for 125. The 3 don't have to be the same size. They also run a similar sale on t-shirts. If you want to feel real daring watch for their grab bag clearance sale. 3 caps for 50 bucks. You pick 1 size, but take what they give you.
Not if you show some reasonable care - like avoiding combinations of moisture and high heat such as a clothes dryer. If you wear a lot and sweat frequently they may also shrink a bit, but the wool flannel used in these makes them a worse choice during warm weather anyway.
Yes, a bit more because of the curvature - but a couple of things to look out for. EFF makes both standard visors and what they call "soft" visors, like on my NY Knickerbockers 1912 cap. With the standard visor, EFF uses plastic, so it is more difficult than a 59Fifty to hold its shape over time, and you'll find yourself flexing it a lot. And with the soft visor, it really can't give the extra room because it has no real structure that can bring the cap along when you curve it. Thanks for the question, hope that helps.
Looks good! I've yet to get an EFF hat or anything from Them but I haven't known about them very long but I admire everything about them and I'm sure I will soon order something from them. I like the buy 2 get one for a dollar hat deals they have. For 33.50 roughly, that's a great price for American made quality stuff, I can't complain at all.
Sure, I will consider it, although I typically don't go for snapbacks (side note to anyone here from Mitchell and Ness, if you wanted to send me one I'd be happy to review it!) Thanks for watching!
A. J. Smith Yeah no major league teams but they do have many minor league teams and some of the historical ones look very similar if not identical to the major league logos of today (I.e. the pcl LA Angels looks almost exactly like a Dodgers hat etc.)
Oh and btw, Some Ebbets caps come with bills (not including the ones labeled “soft bill” on the website) that among the standard bills, are more bendable than others. You never really know if your caps bill is going to be more especially stiff before you get it, but suffice to say that some caps do indeed hold a curve better than others.
These caps look pretty broken-in when you first get them, because of the wool and the soft linen buckram. I really don't need to go through my normal routine with EFF caps because of the throwback construction. Thanks
Doug - thanks for a great, really informative video. I'd like to get a soft-visor six panel EFF cap, but I'm not sure about sizing as I don't usually wear hats or caps. My head circumference is 23 1/4" which seems to be between size 7 3/8 and 7 1/2. would you suggest I stick with the 7 1/2 or go up to 7 5/8?
I actually went to 7-5/8 in two EFF caps after being a natural 7-1/2 in just about everything else... I have been very happy with the fit of both - and their soft visor is really nice on the NY Knickerbockers cap that I have. I'd say you can safely go up the size, and thanks for the comments.
EFF caps would be considered "low crown" or "low profile" in modern terms... not much volume in the crown, which is why I went up by 1/8 size from my normal. But I would still not call them a "dad cap" because they do not hug the entire head like most of those do, thanks.
Personally I'd say a little bit warmer than a wool 59Fifty, because the wool here is slightly thicker... but it's still porous and allows some ventilation.
Has your hat shrunk since getting it? And if so would you have gone up in size even more? I’m normally a 7 1/4 but even my wool 7 1/4 59fifty has gotten pretty tight. Do you think a 7 3/8 would be good for a comfortable fit?
No, mine has stayed mostly the same, but the more you wear and sweat in it, the more likely the wool will draw up and shrink. I've never needed to stretch an EFF cap yet, but for your case I'd definitely go up that 1/8 of a size. I thought I said it in the video, but I am a normal 7-1/2, but with the EFF caps I buy 7-5/8. Thanks
I'm not sure how much it will change things for you right now, but Lids now owns part or all of Ebbets Field Flannels and are selling some of their caps in Lids stores. Lids is also expanding in Europe, so there might be some way in the future for you to get these caps for less $$$ and hassle.
@@dreinthe616 I saw they posted on instagram that they have a European site but it doesn’t work unfortunately. I think I’ll just order one from a Dutch site and see how it fits, worst thing that could happen is that I really like the cap and then quietly cry in the fetal position about spending €105,- on it🙄
Great video! Something I've learned over the years of collecting is that EFF caps are nice but they are not 100% accurate. I would say the caps should be classified more as a vintage-inspired look. To be period accurate, all EFF caps should have leather sweatbands, not just their 8-panel caps. Plus, the caps from the early 1900s to the 1940s should all have soft visors and not just a select few that EFF chooses. With the exception of the 8-panel caps, all EFF caps have the same exact shape, which is not historically accurate either. The materials they use are great and sort of cover up the fact that the shape is much closer to a modern style ball cap than the actual designs which had more of a wider crescent shape for the visors. That style changed around the 1950s which is the shape most of the EFF caps take after. As mentioned, they're still nice caps but not exactly what they advertise them to be which is unfortunate considering they are charging premium prices for them.
Some really great points about accuracy… I think the Ideal Cap Co. tried to maintain the construction on more caps, but I am not sure if they still exist. I’m also concerned with EFF now that they’ve been acquired by Lids. Thanks for the comments!
They put the work into their product like u put in your video! Great job brotha! And i just found this company but have been looking for a good vintage ball cap company for a while. Im really diggin them. What other companies are there like them to compare? Thanks
Awesome, thanks for the great comments... you should check out one of my recent videos - ua-cam.com/video/h0lYwy3Z2IQ/v-deo.html - it was part of a series I did on cap retailers. This part 3 is focused on makers of historical/vintage caps like Ebbets.
There are some differences among Ebbets caps - mostly in the visor and sweatband construction. But they do a solid job of capturing that in the details under each cap page on their website. But another throwback company - the Ideal Cap Co. - definitely uses leather sweatbands on most if not all of their caps, thanks.

I'll be getting a Cleveland Buckeyes cap and Cleveland Green Sox cap fom Ebbets Field Flannels soon!
I'm a huge EEF cap fan! I wear my EFF caps everyday. The 6 panel is my go to. 8 panel is more comfortable.
Cool, thanks for posting - I've not tried one of their 8-Panel offerings, but may do so at some point.

How was the fit? I’m a 7 1/2 myself and feel concerned about going up in size.

dre in the 616 my experience is the standard visors do hold a slight curve over time and use but have a tendency to flatten.
Got it, thanks for posting... that was probably my only (minor) difficulty with the cap, but it certainly won't stop me from getting more EFF caps.

Big EFF sale now!

Hey! Did you notice if bending the brim on this cap gave you a bit more room, the way bending a 5950 brim would?
Yes, a bit more because of the curvature - but a couple of things to look out for. EFF makes both standard visors and what they call "soft" visors, like on my NY Knickerbockers 1912 cap. Doug is there any possibility you could review some of the Mitchell and Ness snapbacks that are out there?
Sure, I will consider it, although I typically don't go for snapbacks (side note to anyone here from Mitchell and Ness, if you wanted to send me one I'd be happy to review it!) Thanks for watching!
