Raised in the Midwest, finely aged in Maryland, and I think this was pretty well done. One thing you missed though: take a day for Annapolis! Especially if you like history and early American architecture styles, plus it's the gateway to boating on the Bay. Only a 30-45:minute drive from Baltimore.
As a Marylander, I give this review a 10/10. We go hard for so Old Bay. (And **yes** the best blue crab is in a shack in the middle of nowhere Charles County 😂) Fun fact: an episode of X-Files was filmed on Rt 228 past the 228 store in Waldorf … I literally shouted out loud that I know that place when I saw the episode 😊
I LOVE driving across the Bay Bridge. I've done it just because I was nearby in Annapolis and had some free time. I've even though of being a chauffeur (a person who is hired to drive a car and the car's owner across the bridge because they are too scared to drive the bridge), but I live about 50 miles from the bridge.
Not really sure why Mark thinks Ocean City is shocking. It's one of the nicest ocean resorts in the country. Yes, it does get crowded in the summer. The year-round population is 10k and in the summer it can be more than 350k. But it is clean, safe, and fun with options for every type of budget and age. And, if you don't like the crowds, you can drive 10 minutes to Assateague Island with the wild ponies and miles of white sand beaches in a natural environment.
One of the things that shocks me when I leave Merlin is beer and wine at grocery stores and gas stations. Almost none of them here sell adult beverages
ROFL: as a Maryland Kid: Old Bay rocks! I moved away in the 90s and I still use Old Bay every time I make eggs for breakfast. Also I am extremely picky about crab cakes… but you GOTTA do a video on the absolute best city in Maryland: Annapolis!
As someone who has lived the first 12 years of my life in Maryland and now lives part of the year in Portugal. My Lisbon place has plenty of Old Bay hahaha...
I am a native Marylander, and yes, I will put Old Bay on chicken salad, tuna salad, potato salad, potatoes, scrambled eggs, grits, and fish. It's an all-purpose seasoning, and really, a substitute for salt. In addition to the places he mentioned, I would recommend visiting the dozens of cool towns along both sides of the bay, from Cambridge, Easton, Oxford and St. Michaels up to Chestertown and Chesapeake City on the Eastern Shore, and Havre de Grace, Annapolis, North Beach, Chesapeake Beach, Solomons Island, Leonardtown and St. Mary's City on the western side. These towns have waterfront access and cool little pubs and restaurants. You will get a good taste of life is like in the counties along the Bay. But if you want a real taste of what that life is really like, book a weekend at a B&B on Smith Island. That's the real deal.
Thanks for coming to my state. I live in Frederick (Western MD)…it’s great 👍🏽. In my opinion, there are four regions…Western MD, Baltimore , DC, and Eastern Shore. Baltimoreans are the ones that speak funny (“Murland” lol) Btw, I’ve been following your channel for a while. Love the energy and information. I’m planning a trip to France, and your videos are super useful.
4:10 As someone from Maryland yes we eat a lot of crab. However crab hammers are a no no. Especially in the eastern shore you will get mocked for using one. You must use a picking knife.
As someone from Maryland, I can tell you a lot of the trouble in OC during the summer is from people out of state, especially all those people from the Philly/NJ area. But yea kids from Baltimore also contribute to the problem.
Lol😂 stop lying The kids from B-more city are too poor to go down there and the kids from the county are too bourgeois they’re going to Va beach and Myrtle beach … ask me how I know 😂😂😂
This video was pretty on point. I was surprised at how accurate this video actually is …we definitely put old bay on EVERYTHING 😂 Just so you know…If you can afford to you eat crabs year round. Also most of the people you come across in OC aren’t from MD.
Maryland has everything except a desert. I'm from SC and I thought OH BOY summers must be like Connecticut or NH - WRONG! Sometimes it's as if I never left SC! It might be psychological but as soon as you cross the state line into Pa it feels cooler or less humid :) If you go to the eastern shore, where everyone says y'all, Easton, St. Michaels, and Oxford are pretty idyllic. Steamed crabs are great I just wish they weren't priced higher than filet mignon!
I grew up in Western-ish Maryland (Brunswick to be exact) but live in Phoenix, AZ now. Most people here don't realize how different western Maryland is from the eastern part of the state. I don't think I ever even tried crab until I was an adult. The town I grew up in has more in common with West Virginia. Also, on more than one occasion I've told someone here I'm from Maryland and then they get it confused with Massachusetts.
Brunswick! My 3rd great grandparents operated Lock 30 on the C&O Canal in Brunswick. When my 3rd GGF passed away in 1864, his wife (with help from her sons) took over his job.
I live in Is frederick county Maryland in a town called Middletown. I've read in a book one time. That George Washington said that Middletown was the most beautifulest town he has ever been in. The Western side of Maryland Is very beautiful.
As a New Yorker who has lived in Maryland for 17 years, I still don’t get the Old Bay thing. What you’re saying is 100% true about it! People here are obsessed. However, I don’t even own Old Bay. 😮. We actually assume Maryland is just the part near the Beltway. And Ocean City.
Not too bad coming from a Marylander. When we go to Normandy I always stuff a few cans of Old Bay in my bag to give to our friends. In Baltimore in the summer you can hear people saying “I’m going downy oshun” or “I’m going downy shore” They are two different places oshun = Ocean City or OC, shore is anything on the Chesapeake. What you left out is Annapolis. Annapolis is what I consider the jewel of MD. Whenever we entertain people from out of state our go to is Annapolis. There is just so much history there.
11th shock of MD...that "metallic pee" BMW behind you. Spot on as usual. Yes, the state flag is everywhere and in my gazillion times in the state, I have yet to see it flown upside down which seems easy to do.
Make sure you visit Frederick, MD and specifically Carroll Creek, Just FYI, restaurants the serve steamed crabs don’t use Old Bay. It is usually the J O brand.
There's so much more to Maryland than the City of Baltimore or Ocean City.😊 Annapolis is the state capital. People even confuse the cities in Baltimore County with the City of Baltimore. Driving through the city of Baltimore is crazy any time of the day & most nights.
Mark you need to try the Old Bay Hot seasoning. I put it on everything. Not talking about the hot sauce. Also the Eastern Shore has some nice small towns to check out on the way to OC.
It's crabs not crab!!! Lol. And true marylanders eat crabs year round, we just buy them from suppliers that ship them from Florida & Texas. Also old bay on scrambeled eggs!
Hey Mark, i just spent a week in Arizona (Phoenix, Sedona, Page), and as a german (who was never there before), it was a little tricky in advance to find out which cities / areas are a must see, and which ones are totally touristy (Sedona). Could you maybe make a new video about Arizona!? The ones on your channel are 10 years old, and some things seem to have changed (for example regarding Antelope Canyon)
I'm from Gilbert, AZ and it's a pretty nice area to visit if you ever decide to go back there. Also Greer and Flagstaff are worth checking out as well.
The one thing to remember is that anywhere within 15 miles of Washington DC is NOT the Maryland you're talking about. While they do like the blue crabs, the areas closer to DC have their own sports teams (Commanders and Nationals) and aren't necessarily fans of either the Ravens or Orioles. Also, and this is very annoying to me, there are no shaved ice/snowball places when you get closer to the DC metro area. I wish we had them, I love snowballs. In addition, they aren't as crazy about Old Bay as other parts of Maryland.
In the video Mark said you can’t combine fudge and cookie in a word and not get banned from UA-cam. I’ve never heard this before. Is this really true?!

Utz sells potato chips ("crab" chips) with Old Bay; someone must like them, but they're much higher salt than regular chips, and, well, pretty terrible. Old Bay is easily avoidable, even on seafood.
Old Bay is a Baltimore thing. Other parts of Maryland not so much. Montgomery County, the largest county in the state, is not an Old Bay region at all.
That’s because Montgomery County is more like DC. Old Bay is found in a majority of the state. Just like scrapple is a favorite in MD. ES is nigh on both.
That’s true… I hear people talk about Old Bay a lot and see it on random things when we go to OC, but I personally have no old bay in my house and no clue what to do with it. I thought it was because I am a transplant.

if you go to Frederick eat dinner at Volt! I say that assuming it's still there.

As we used to say…Baltimore is just a suburb of Annapolis!
Welcome to Maryland. Don't forget to get your MD state flag shorts. Hope you are enjoying Baltimore.
My favorite museum in Baltimore is the American Visionary Art Museum..
I hope you experienced a MD original - the orange crush cocktail! Not to be missed,
I hope you mean from Harborside in West OC, the home of the Orange Crush

Culture Shock #11: Driving the Bay Bridge for the first time.

I thought it was fun and scenic when I drove across them.

My wife is from Baltimore and she approves of this video. 😆
As a Maryland native the Old Bay is true. Also you should visit havredegrace and the promenade in haveredegrace.

100%
So is Ellicott City... Neat old town.
Check out the Mason-Dixon Line where you can visit a restaurant that mixes PA Dutch and MD flavors. Scrapple and crab cakes.

Sheetz (gas station) in Frederick sells beer
@@molinaafo Yes, I think the different counties have different rules when it comes to alcohol sales.
