Todd particularly dislikes bland, uninteresting songs. Because to him, even the outrageously terrible and offensive have some content value. Hence why Last Night (and I'm Blue last year) have been his personal worst songs.
And why he thinks Girls Like You is the worst Maroon 5 song.

the funny thing about todd is that, the more mellow he is the more vicious he becomes, he's less brutal when he's screaming
Yeah, he went from being screaming 2000's reviewer stereotype to disappointed dad who thinks on his criticisms.
Which only makes it funnier when he does raise his voice. "No Liz! PENIS COLADA is not gonna win you a grammy!" is one of his best bits ever.

Last year's list Brad knew about the transition tracks never being on the list with ABCDEFU being the only exception. Maybe his mind got wiped since then.

In defense of putting "This Is Why" as the transition music, usually it's never on the list to begin with. ABCDEFU on last year's list was the only time that it's happened. Save Your Tears was the transition music for 2021's worst, and that's a pretty good song.

Honestly it’s probably the biggest reason why everyone was so shocked when they first saw last year’s worst list. I honestly thought “Oh dang he must really hate this year in music if this song is not on it” when I first saw it.
Yeah, it was a full circle moment for us bc it's something that had never happened in all his years making these lists.

Big Sean's I Don't F*** with You was Todd's transition music and it then appeared high on his best list that year.
The bumper music is not there as a list placement. It is a song from the year with lyrics that relate to being bad or blowing the year off or whatever. One year, he put the worst list bumper music on the best list.
I would've lol'd if Todd said, "I didn't tell you to stop. Do it again", and then "This Is Why" is the next song on the list.

I like how unpredictable you can be.
Which is why this year's list kinda sucked. Because if you watched any of his videos this year, you already knew at least three songs (Last Night, Try That in A Small Town, Rich Men North of Richmond) were gonna be not just on the list but probably highly ranked, kinda turns this year's list into more of a Top 7.
You can always expect only songs from the radio and from tiktok that people on twitter complained about. You're never gonna get the picks that Brad or Fantano will give.

What I love about Todd is that his "best" and "worst" lists are basically just his "favorite" and "least favorite". He has particular opinions and only speaks for himself. If you follow his vids or the Song vs Song podcast, you can accurately track and predict his opinions on the year-end lists.
And that's the way it should be. A lot of music reviewers just follow the general consensus on these lists and it's really boring.

The Vampire bit was so fucking good lmfao, I like to believe Brad was experiencing the Frank Reynolds "I Get It" moment in real time after 2+ years of tearing apart goofy pop punk bands in front of their devoted fans. Great thing about subbing to both these guys is that I get to enjoy Todd's lists twice. Can't wait for the best of 2023.
Me being devoted to goofy pop punk bands for years I had a “I get it” moment (towards folks who hate on pop punk) when MGK made “Emo Girl” and I saw some of the 30 year old mfs on tiktok who try to appeal to pop punk fans and post videos that say “DID WE JUST MAKE THE SONG OF THE SUMMER?!” with really corny lyrics

I know most people who are here watch Todd already, but he liked "This Is Why". He tends to pick good songs for the transition music.
I guess that it's because of last year, when the transition music also happened to be one of the worst songs. (Even then, a song Todd actually likes being transition music on the worst songs list had always being the norm beforehand.)
fun fact: my spouse actually texted todd about that morgan wallen song before he'd heard it. and then they mutually hated it together for the rest of the year.

Jason Aldean, creator of "Try That in a Small Town", is from Macon Georgia. That's literally the fourth largest city in the state. 150k people.
You know there needs to be more pushback for class appropriation, there are so many political and televangelist grifters that pretend to speak for the lower class to push their racist agendas, clout, and money! Like Tucker Carlson and Alex Jones are good examples.
Todds cutaways are incredible. The Futurama clip and the Colbert picture alone were hilarious. Thats an aspect of making video essays that he has always nailed.

I rarely agree with Todd or even care much for his opinions, but a major thing I agree with him on is that mediocrity is worse than just straight up songs being bad. Mediocrity is the killer of inspiration and passion most of the time.
Exactly why I think the worst year for pop music was 2013, where it seemed like every song was a 4 out of 10. Inoffensive/bland music is the absolute worst.
Right like when hear pop champagne at least it makes you chuckle, but there's nothing that would make you want to listen to a boring song especially when you've heard countless other ones that sound identical
A bad song can inspire a better artist to write a master piece, bland doesn't do that yeah
Probably one reason why Todd mellowed out was because of his Worst of 2013 video, where he dialed up the rage and bitterness to a very uncomfortable degree. Todd blames that video’s tone on the fact that he had lost his grandmother that year and he was still struggling to cope with it. Later on Todd acknowledged that the video’s incredibly depressing negativity made it hard to watch and he toned it down significantly for the following year’s worst list.
I'm guessing the death of the nostalgia-critic style of reviewing also has something to do with it. Most old-school reviewers have become a lot less shouty and negative
Todd in the Shadows near single-handedly expanded my taste in music, despite only reviewing pop music he paved the way for me to watch Fantano, William Maranci's mashups, and you so I'm so glad you like his videos too

The _moment_ I heard it, my first thought was "This has the same energy as the 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Bitch' song from Todd in the Shadows, wonder what Todd's reaction to it would be" and he didn't disappoint.
See i think one of the biggest differences between how you and todd view lists like this is that when you say "worst songs" you really mean the worst, but todd realizes even those songs have some ironic comedic value, theyre at least interesting in how bad they are, the songs todd truly hates and puts on these lists are often the most boring and unoriginal songs of the year

Todd's bumper music in the worst list isn't supposed to be like 'this is unofficially on this list', he's said that several times. It's meant to be a palate cleanser. For a while he was doing mashups specifically for that reason.

No, I'm talking about the really really boring ones, that are still sung by the best singers in the respective countries, like the two "Amen"s in 2021, Switzerland the last two years, or any of Albania's screaming women.

Todd's really funny to me because he's very much an old man when it comes to pop music but i can relate to him.
What Todd did to Brad with "vampire" is what he did to me with "Arcade" (and also with "vampire"): he took the things about it that KINDA bugged me and zeroed in on them so much it was kinda hard to ignore. I at least like "Arcade" still, even if I'd be happy not hearing it again for quite a while. "vampire" can take a powder, certainly compared to the rest of that album.

Sometimes that's by mirroring the musical trends that make the bad music bad, but mostly and it this case it's about how the list-maker feels about the musical trends that make the bad music bad.
