Erratic NES-Controller Fix

- I bought these cheap USB NES-controllers for my Pallet NES ( • Pallet NES ) because I want to relive the old days.
Unfortunately, they were really bad the way they came. But it was an extremely simple fix!
Something like this could probably be done on many other cheap D-PADs that don't work as expected.

Looks like a common issue with digital dpads lately. I encountered this with the pro controller and the dpad on my rg35xx. Thanks for confirming my suspicions about my NES mini controller. Now to go beat Batman.
What? That's horrible news. Surely "real controllers" should have better quality than this. :S

Hey JWAM Shop. I am looking to create a very large NES controller, by wiring 8 Momentary Push Button Switchs, No Lock to the USB NES controller.
similar to the one you are working with, in this video.
I am having a problem, determining how the Up, Down, Left, Right are wired, as the up down, look like they are wired together but may have separate grounds.
If you were connecting extended wires to each of the buttons, and to the up, down, left, right. What might that look like?
What program, were you using to test with?

The program I used was most likely "jstest" or "jstest-gtk".
I don't have the possibility to have a closer look at the moment, but I doubt any of the buttons are wired together, but they probably share a ground (the io-pins are most likely grounded upon a button-press, i.e the button shorts the io-pin to the ground-lead). You should be able to verify this by following the leads. So If I were to extend the leads, I would solder one wire to each of the button pads, and then solder a single GND-wire at some appropriate location and hook the momentary-switches to the 8+1 leads.
Okay, so I bet my controller is unfixable. The only button on the entire controller that works is the A button. But here's my problem. The A button makes you move, run, pause, and jump all at the same time. It's insane.
Ouch. Sounds like something's shorted or that the IC is fried. If you can't see any damage in the wires or a massive blob of solder somewhere, then yes, you probably can't fix it. :/

Thanks for the vid. Made mine a lot better but they're still not perfect. I tried a ton of different tape in different places. Maybe they were just too cheap haha
Wouldn't surprise me if there's a big quality difference within the same product-line as well. We get what we pay for, I guess... :)
Hey I have bought two controllers, one of them doesn't register any button press, the other one is activates the horizontal axis when pressing A. When pressing forward it does not do anything... I have some soldering skills but I do not know what to do
Hi! Hard for me to say without more info. I don't know if it's a configuration issue or a hardware issue. One would think it's pretty unlikely that both would be completely broken electronically if they were bought new. What are you using them on? And what exactly did you buy?

going to try this, the controller i recently acquired does not behave right, even with multiple input configured.. diagonals are nearly impossible and just by pressing left or right you can trigger up and down as well.. very lame

What kind of tape do you use?
Mieszkooooo Just regular "skotch" tape. Any tape that is thin and non-conductive should work just fine.

+Lazy watchsmith Joo, on vähän alkanut ärsyttämään tuo homma että joillakin on tarpeeksi varaa käynnistää tehdas ja rakentamaan halvalla tavaroita, ja ei sitten jostain syystä edes välitä lopputuloksesta.
Pahin juttu näissä kontrollereissa on se että laatu ei oikeastaan ole ollenkaan paha. Ne ei vaan satu toimimaan(??)
