I remember listening to this song on my 20th birthday. I just went for a walk and listened to "twenty years", this song meant to me very much at that time. Now, when I'm almost 31 and remind myself about this song I always see that lost girl, that was trying to find herself through the music. Placebo helped me so much.

About the fact Brian was depressed at a phase in his life, he told this fact himself in a french interview: the atmosphere is happy, Brian makes jokes (in french of course, he' s a french fluent speaker) and suddently, he just says: "I will be very serious just a moment, even if it will break the joyfull atmosphere..." and just said he had overcome a real disease: going through nervous breakdown. He doesn' give details, but I remember him speaking of "une vraie maladie"/ true disease. It lasted just a few minutes.....I love Brian, he inspired my life so much, and many years after this interview, I can't forget this real need he had to just say he wasn't unbreakable and had suffered a lot.
This interview was brodcasted with Thierry Ardisson many years ago, maybe at the time of the release of "Sleeping with Goths ". I think Brian came twice maybe on this show which doesn't exist anymore today: "Tout le Monde en Parle"/ the title of the french show... the time he spoke about "the disease" he was fighting against was a time when his hair were very short, and, he was sitting next to a beautiful top model Beatriz, many fans are sitting around. Even if it was a very intimate moment, many young people heard him, and could identify. Many friends of mine worried a lot for him, for his health, after this parenthese which seemed to dispel the charm of this cool interview, so did I. He is still among us, thank you Brian for giving so much to so many people. Bonsoir.

Interesting. I originally took that one a bit differently. As in, those you meet may be holding that for you. Some hold the rose, open to love and beauty, and some only bring pain holding the rope to see you hang.

I heard Pacebo when they first came out and rediscovered them over the past few years. I'm stunned I could ever forget how amazing they were - intense, mood, hypnotic, their songs say so much. Their lyrics are a gut-punch, their music is a follow-up blow, although like many Placebo fans out there, I took a lot of comfort in their songs as a weirdo misfit. Unique is a word that's lost a lot of meaning, but there really is nobody else like them.

I'm finally (🧐😇edit: almost) convinced this is the best song ever. I've read incredible lyrics but if we're to search for the truest ones regarding the "human condition" (human perspective of life), I think this takes the cake.
It covers everything. Afaik at least.
Now, obviously, there are many better/more specific lyrics about division/politics and other consequent issues and (in)human behaviors, complexes, greed & false goals, failed families, etc, but yeah.
Well. If I got it right this does cover the division part a bit. With the "you're the truth, not I" part, it's gotta be hinting at objectivity in some way. And that's why I said it covers pretty much everything.

Oggi ho riascoltato questa Canzone e mi sono passati questi 20 anni davanti, cosa che 10 anni fa non avevo idea, non avevo mai vissuto 20 anni sulla mia pelle. E skno scoppiata a piangere. Non so perché. Forse perché Brian pur non conoscendomi neppure, mi ha cresciuta. È stato qualcosa di bello quando tutto faceva schifo. Ha dato voce ai miei pensieri. Ho inciso addosso le sue parole e ogni volta che lo sento cantare scoppio in un pianto liberatorio perché mi passa davanti tutta la mia adolescenza. I remember back in 2004 when I first heard to this song, which a school colleague presented Placebo to me and made me love this band since then. A lot of things happened from there, I went thru a lot of highs and lows and Placebo were there in my darkest days lending me strength to keep going. I wish someday I can get to know Brian in person and tell him how much his band helped me and how they are a important part of who I am today. I'm happy I could be in their show here in Brazil but still couldn't reach Brian to tell him out. Thanks Placebo for all the good things and memories you gave me

When I heard this song for the first time, it was already familiar to me. I don't know why, it was like I knew this song since my childhood although this song didn't exist at that time. Well now it's twenty years ago, ans this song still slaps, i really love placebo.
Twenty years is not a long time as we imagined. I still remember everything very clearly. This 20 years hit me so hard. I only had 5 good event. Dont even know the numbers of bad ones. Dead of my grandparents, dead of my only big brother, dead of my first child in my womb, unfairnesses, times that i got fired, quited jobs and my desperations. I dont even know how many times I cried on carpet. I already accepted that there wont be good and happy days as I thought when I was a child. I only wish for normal and secure life for my family. Thats all.

I totally relate, I have seen to much death, lost and delivered a 5 month stillborn and 3 miscarriages I have a whole in my heart that even with years of therapy I can fill. Maybe when I die I will feel peace.....maybe

I had just gone through my first breakup at 18 with a girl that I loved deeply and it messed me up so bad I tried to take my own life. I remember this song helping me through those difficult months as it reminded me the best years of my life were ahead of me. Thank god I listened to it.

I remember in 2003 my buddies and i met at a seaside in the summer and we made a fire, drunk and with girls. i started listening to placebo on a disc player in 2003 while i was on the graduation trip from my school. hard to believe that 20 years have passed. i love brian molko's voice. He has been a companion all these years. I have listened to his music over and over again. the music is loud like love.

Esta canción, las letras de Placebo, el video. Y Brian que lo es todo. Los amo, me encanta todo de ellos, es tan buena la banda que no hay nada que decir, mejor disfrutarlos. Me acompañaron en tiempos difíciles y lindos de mi adolescencia, y ahora los escucho y suenan igual de bien que hace una década o dos. Se merecen lo mejor, aunque ya cambiaron de baterista varias veces, siempre suenan y lucen genial, especialmente en vivo.
