  • Edge computing is what it sounds like: computing that takes place at the edge of corporate networks, with “the edge” being defined as the place where end devices access the rest of the network - things like phones, laptops, industrial robots, and sensors. Learn more about how this process works.

    Seems like a lot of people are confused between the concept of edge computing and the concept of conventional personal computers. Conventional PCs are something that you have a lot of freedom and flexibility with. You can do whatever you want with your PC - re-program it, install software on it, play with it... However an edge computing device is something that is more likely administered by a central service provider (i.e. Amazon Alexa offered by Amazon) that you cannot easily tamper with, but it does have enough processing power to do many things locally rather than always having to talk to the Cloud. A prime example is a self-driving car. A self-driving Tesla is an epitome an "edge computer" which drives your car without having to talk to the Cloud, quite conceivably so. A Tesla self-driving car receives upgrades from Tesla every once in a while. This is a sign of being administered by Tesla. Last but not least, you can't re-program a Tesla to let it ignore pedestrians in front of itself otherwise it'd become a really cheap assassin... Hope it helps.

      So will an edge computing take the form of a physical device like a router or will it be a service installed onto our devices?

    • @lcsxwtian
      @lcsxwtian 3 роки тому +3

      @@Hope0fHumanity Any form factor you mentioned is possible. Edge computing is much more of an informational architectural concept than a particular physical presence. For as long as the algorithms live on the edge & make decisions on their own rather than living on a central server, they form edge computing.

      You can reprogram it because it was originally programmed in a specific way to stop at pedestrians, so you can definitely reprogram it to do something else. It's just there are hurdles of getting around that, and it comes down to bypassing security access and and gaining administrator privilege. But just know that how anything is designed in this world, you can always retrace it back to its original form and change the factory settings. How it was originally programmed, it can certainly be changed using booleans value (true/false) and it will do the opposite. The boolean expression can simply be "!STOP (not stop)" instead of "STOP" for a pedestrian function inside of a program. But doing so would probably put us in jail, so that's not the standard procedures for Tesla.

    So, edge computing is like attaching a mini computing,storing and communicating element with the actuator and sensors. But isn't this what is known as embedded systems

    • @henrypeterson5616
      @henrypeterson5616 3 роки тому +5

      There's overlap in these concepts definitely, however, I think edge computing is a term to describe where the computing work is being done and embedded systems is a term to describe what hardware/software is doing the computing. An embedded system would be a type of system that does edge computing.

    • @keystothebox

      You are correct - "Edge Computing" is just the new buzz-word for utilizing and edge device such as embedded systems.

      @@keystothebox Topological and technological distribution of networked computing power in the domains of hardware, software and machine-to-machine communication is not just simply a buzz-word, mate. I really liked Henry's suggestion to consider the distinction between HOW (technology, methodology) and WHERE (topology, communication) computing is done while considering the conept of edge computing. It's definetly not only about specific implementation of software or set-up of hardware. Anotoher crucial aspects of edge computing are data streams and how balance of centralized and de-centralized control of those data streams is engineered and manged firstly (but not only) in technical sense.

      Strictly speaking no, CDNs are just a file-share repository in their simplest states. Many CDN companies though do utilize edge computing to improve the quality of service of their CDN's.

    Would quantum computing solve this issue in the future?

    • @jwm2568
      @jwm2568 3 роки тому +2

      In order for the data to be processed, you first need to get it to the processor. Although quantum computing may at some point contribute for very niche solutions, at current for the majority of interested stakeholders, it is connectivity that counts. That is exactly the reason why the roll-out of 5G pushes the industry towards the Edge since once available it will allow real-time processing for (mission) critical applications for which 4G currently may not be sufficient to do a proper job.

      Yeah, I recently learned about Edge Computing while researching cloud computing. Isn't this what companies used to do? Back when they just put all the servers or key IT hardware in a room somewhere on the campus? Now it's called Edge Computing?

  • @keystothebox
    @keystothebox 2 роки тому +1

    Edge computing is not new, been around since the 70s. It is also no more a security risk than the cloud data centers. Yes certain security precautions are needed, but that is absolutely no different than cloud computers. I recommend you change that in the video.

    Very clear graphics and explanation -- or at least the part I could understand. Unfortunately, the narrator often talked so fast that many of the words got garbled. And the closed caption feature is so horrible it borders on comical. Other than that, a very nice, tight, straightforward and helpful video.

    So when we compute on server we have to make a new term " computing" and then we go back to regular on site computing and now we need another new term "edge computing". So dumb all corporate word salad.
