    Simple but nice. Beautiful piece of wood. What did you do with the piece you removed? Would have made a nice lid for this piece.

      Initially I was thinking of using it as a lid but decided against it! I still have it on a pile of wood in the garage, I'm sure it'll be used at some point lol.

      Haha apologies Jen! England were playing in the final so I ended up forgetting to click the 'post' button! I also ended up doing the same yesterday with this weeks video! I've gotta tighten up lol.

    Once upon a time I had a wonderful garden and a very nice landlady. She was big in to gardening and I took this neglected garden and turned it in to a magical world full of landscape of colorful fireworks. Every year we put in a new bed. Every bed had to be full of wonderful new things I found at the local garden center. When my landlady would come around she would ask me "What is this flower here?" and I would respond... "This flower is red." Or "This flower is purple." Whatever the color of the flower was, case by case. This was the first time I toyed with perennials so it was way more important to me to insure something was flowering at all times as it got bigger one year to the next... and stayed alive at the same time, year to year. I could never remember names of the flowers. Yes, I should have kept a notebook in the long run after a lifetime of gardening. Still, she was +60 years older than I was. You figure she would know it all! 😁
    So? What is this wood? Looks hard. It could be a soft wood. It may be dark or maybe red in color. That's about the end of my base of knowledge on woods. hehe

      Haha sounds like you're about as close as I am to knowing what this type of wood is! Still have no clue, I'll just turn it and hope for the best!

    Nice piece. The bark says some kind of Oak, but the grain looks like a Cypress. I have no idea😂

    What is the flat tool?? Looks like a skew but its different??

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  5 місяців тому

      I did use a skew on this and also used the lathe knife to part off that piece, the skew was the light brown handle and the lathe knife was the darker handle.

    White beam

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  5 місяців тому

      Yeah I think it could potentially be White Beam but it doesn't look exactly the same as the google images

    Willow maybe?

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  5 місяців тому

      Potentially mate, it just looked so weird when it was wet, it was bright silver with luminous green ventricles running down it, very odd looking stuff.

  • @jeffreyreed5299

    Bark looks like Pin Oak. Does it have a bad smell? Won't if it's really dry.

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  5 місяців тому

      Nahh doesn't really smell like anything, It looks completely different to when it was cut down. It's the same stuff I used in the 'Alien log' I did a while ago and it was completely silver with green ventricles.

  • @vernowens5375
    @vernowens5375 5 місяців тому

    Nice work! One comment though. You are lucky that bandsaw didn't roll that log work out of your control. Worse...you get drug in with it. You should never ever cut a log without having it secured in a jig to prevent it rolling forward. You got lucky this time. That won't always be the case.

    Looking at the grain, not Pin Oak

    I think its Poplar

    • @IanMacWoodturning
      @IanMacWoodturning  5 місяців тому

      Possibly, It was very silver when I first got it and has dried slightly more brown. It potentially could be a type of Poplar but I still have no clue to be honest.
