I had the privilege to see Lila Downs in Guadalajara just a few days after a big earthquake hit Mexico City back in 2017. We thought she was going to cancel. We were all shook. She did a disclamer at the begining of her show and she explained she didn't cancel because we needed to have some light through all the darkness. And... Man! Did she deliver? If you ever get the chance to see her 'live' don't miss it! This woman doesn't even need a microphone.

It's Black Dove. I love Lila Downs. But the best version of this song is by Chevela Vargas. It is a song about a woman losing her lover. Check out the soundtrack to the movie Frida with Selma Hyack. Lila is on there to. She and Chevela are both in the movie singing too!

It's not "where your friends say or assure me that you're leaving" its "where your friends assure me that you go", because here in Mexico we used to say like that. Go= ir (go to a place) , leave= irte (going away from a place) , the song talks about someone who's brokenhearted by someone who used to go to "la parranda" (going out to get drunk at bars) she said : ya agarraste por tu cuenta la parranda ("you took the "parranda" for your own account"), here we say that when your partner starts to do the things without you or go out without you and it's clear all it's over... "Black pigeon" it's because he's not "good" in the sense he likes to carry a life with a hard heart or in the immorality; here in Mexico we used to say : "Blanca palomita" (little white pigeon) as saying the person is innocent (ingenious) and with a moralistic behavior, and in the sarcastic way we used to say: "you have to be a little withe pigeon" (for sure, aha) telling the person we don't believe it's honest in what they want to show us.
This song is for someone who it's really brokenhearted, and it's hardly fighting to forget someone that love so deep, " God give me strength because I'm dying for going out to look for him" where? She don't knows, but she's afraid to really find him where his friends assures he use to go..." We can think they talk about a bar. But you know the situation can be displaced in our own or whatever context of time and place.
