Very interesting to watch westerners react to a Deep South movie! It’s very easy to be judgemental about the Indian society if you just observe at the surface level, not saying you were! For example, Maddy’s parents are not honest with each other (mom gives money to son without dad’s knowledge), this would be a big no-no in the western society. Parents do not respect children’s basic human rights and many such unacceptable things come up in this movie. But you also saw how parents sacrifice everything for their kids in the Indian society, you saw how an older sister puts family needs first and her own needs in second place and many more such good sides of the society/people. As an Indian, I watched this movie without questioning any of this, now when I watch you guys reacting to this movie, all these things pop into my head. What are they thinking about us?
To understand how the Indian society got to this state, you’ll need to understand its history, what the society has gone through during foreign invasions for a thousand years, and how Indians have completely forgotten their civilizational roots, and how we got here to this state of utter chaos and confusion so much so that we cannot even be honest within our own families and yet a family would anything and everything for you. A classic oxymoron! It’s crazy! 😜
