I grew up swimming there. The beach was below the loop with the shower houses in the middle. The path around to the left was the handicap access. They also had a doc over there as well as raised picnic platforms for them as well.

I bet that would had been cool to see. I remember camping somewhere over that way when I was a kid. The tent camp spots were in the woods, right by the lake. Where do you think I was? I can't find the place.

That sounds like the overflow campground. I'm not entirely sure where it is but it sounds like what a friend described. The campground I remember is a little further up the road that has the Buttermilk Hill trail head.

That beach was still opened and maintained in 2008 I’m guessing it was around then when they quit maintaining it. It had shower houses and a nice concession at one time.

What a shame 😢! My SNF big double-sided map/guide dated 2002 lists a beach at Johnson Creek. As the other commenter said, it was probably in operation for a few years more before it finally fell victim to budget freezes around the time of the Great Recession. Seems like they shut down several of the smaller and less used areas around that time.
Obviously it cost a lot of money to put in all that walkway and now all it leads to is a bunch of weeds and brushy shoreline. I guess it is still a nice accessible nature trail, but I doubt it is much used. Once maintenance is dropped it doesn't take long for nature to take over and bringing it back would cost almost as much as starting from scratch.

It is a shame. The Shawnee used to have a lot more and it needs that once again. We need more money, personnel, and activities in the Shawnee.

I used to go to that beach all the time. I witnessed it deteriorate. About 2002 and 2003, silt got mixed in with the sand and got worse every year. In 2004 it felt like walking in slime.

3:38 that user trail goes to another point on the lake that is opposite of a floating fishing dock

In what areas of SNF are bear precautions necessary? I've only begun to explore your the region (as an adult) & haven't been at an area with bear boxes before.

We have no bears. But they use bear box containers probably because it's a standard among National Forest and raccoons are like our yogi bears of the forest
