- One person was killed, and two others were hospitalized after what appears to be an attack with a Samurai-style sword Thursday afternoon in San Dimas. KTLA's Rick Chambers reports on July 18, 2024.

Most Japanese swords, are what you call "Mall Swords".. made of Dull Stainless Steel (Stainless is too Soft to hold a sharp edge, and dulls really fast). They are not made for actual combat. They are made for Decoration. A REAL combat steel (high carbon) sword, will cost you anywhere from $500 to well over $1000. You can literally spilt a Mall Sword in half, with a combat steel sword... and the combat steel sword wont even have a Scratch on the blade.
Furthermore... A Chinese Jian (Double Edged Sword), made of proper High Carbon steel... is equally Lethal, compared to a Japanese sword. The Jian is much lighter, and thus much FASTER. And since it had dual edges, its far more Versatile.. as you can cut in both directions, at lightning speeds.
Of course... The Japanese sword is more Intuitive to use... to someone that has no training at all. There’s many different swords around the world but mostly in Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Middle East all with their own characteristics. Some were for thrusting in while others were shaper and meant for cutting, still there are sporting swords for fencing and there are popular replica swords from around the world that are blunt and cheaply made.

It's frustrating to listen to media reports lately, they never provide enough information. Was anyone arrested? Why don't they show the complete footage of the police encounter with the woman carrying the sword in the street? Did they not see her as an obvious threat holding a weapon and just let her feign ignorance pretending not to speak English? There is no way that the police just took both women to the hospital because "they are unable to make a statement" and then take their sweet time to find some interpreter to help them with their investigation. It's obvious how certain folks are treated with kid gloves when they have interactions with law enforcement while others are just presumed to be violent threats. 😡

Saying 'chinese' is pretty vague,there's seven major fanilies of the Chinese language, Mandarin, Cantonese, Shanghainese, Hakka, Hokkien, Ziang and Gan.
You can blame the Chinese dynasties (including the KMT and CCP) for that wide brush always being applied. Mandarin isn't even really specific either since it is referring to a language of governance, something the peasants never spoke. Sino-Tibetan languages are not ones that pride accurate description of what they are talking about nor coming up with new ones to go with the times.

Considering they're doing an official investigation, they need the translations to be as accurate as possible. They probably don't want to use an app that is notoriously inaccurate on translations. Interpreters are able to translate much more accurately because they understand the nuances of both languages much better than an app does.

Katana is just literally "sword" in Japanese. But there are different kinds of Katanas. Just as there are different kinds of swords such as long sword, broad sword, great sword, etc.

no, because Mandarin isn't an official language in the U.S., I would understand if it was Spanish, because that's the 2nd largest language spoken in the U.S. But not with Mandarin.
