  • Thanks to the fascinating singer-songwriter Ben de la Cour. Ben was born in London, grew up in Brooklyn, has lived in Havana (Cuba), L.A., New Orleans, and Nashville. He has competed internationally as an amateur boxer. He is currently on the road with Lucinda Williams, working as her roadie. He’s also been a bartender, a janitor, and an agricultural worker. As I said, fascinating! His songs have been called dark and atmospheric (he calls his music Americanoir), but he is extremely eclectic, from rockers to folk ballads. He won the prestigious 2016 Kerrville New Folk Competition, and his most recent record (Sweet Anhedonia) was produced by the one and only Jim White.
In this conversation, we talk about Ben’s interesting biography, his songwriting, working with Jim White, his boxing career, Carl Jung, sobriety, Nick Cave, Tom Waits, Townes Van Zandt, Ben’s upcoming record, memorable shows, opening for Robert Earl Keen (who Ben calls the Texan Anton Chekhov), Kerouac’s On the Road, meditation, and many more things. Thanks again to Ben de la Cour.
