  • Filmed on Tuesday, October 22 2024, I drive around Monroe, MI to see what's going on.
In 1784, Francis Navarre of Canada and a group of French-Canadian colonists arrived here and named the settlement Frenchtown, the third European community in what would become the state of Michigan.
The area was of great strategic importance during the War of 1812 due to its proximity to Detroit. American forces en route to retake Detroit from the British camped in the area in the winter of 1812-1813. 200 Native Americans and 63 Canadian militia were driven from the area by 600 Kentucky militiamen and 100 French soldiers.
Later that winter, a force of 800 Native Americans and 597 British re-captured Frenchtown. Of the 1,000 American soldiers in the area, 397 were killed and 547 were captured.
After the conclusion of the War of 1812, the community was renamed Monroe in honor of President James Monroe, who visited the territory in 1817.
Monroe was the childhood home of General George Armstrong Custer, who led troops in the Indian Wars and died at the Battle of Little Bighorn, commonly referred to as "Custers last stand".
In 1910, President William Howard Taft and Custer's widow Elizabeth Bacon Custer unveiled a statue of Custer on his horse which still stands today.
The La-Z-Boy furniture company was founded in Monroe in 1927.
The Monroe Power Plant opened in 1974, which is the third largest coal power plant in America.
