There's nothing more meaningful and satisfying to have a true definition for education itself and to apply it out next. Thank you, Mr. Professor Peter Gray for your primer! :) I shall one day create an education organization known as the MES (Matrioska Education System) and I will always in my heart; shall credit you for your knowledge you shared us through that sparks it all! It shall be a heaven and a haven for many learners and educators; with academic freedom held and a society that follows not of rules or regulations but of values! Individualism will enter the scene with democratic (and anarchic) decision makings that each and every individual agrees on a consensus. No one shall and will get left out. Instead of authority; there's autonomy built with responsibility just as what the life itself is of. Instead of discipline; devotion will be in and instead of judgement full of subjectiveness; evaluation with objectiveness shall come and hence, the sides of the coin are no more but of an whole entire coin; viewed in all angles which are all represented. I am Zaw*, now age 16, and had started working on it to establish it soon since 3 years ago; living in a nation that historically struggled and is now; currently corrupt called Burma / Myanmar. But soon, every war, every poverty, every conflict, every crime to everything around us will be resolved and the education is the seed for it all and for us all. I have a dream to bring a change to the education system like Finland and reform the country for the benefit for all as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and I hope to learn more form you! :)
Agree I passed tests (Lana Del Rey) through Bakugan and self directed my teacher is the TV so far it's good still love my class which is my dad's house :)
Imposed schooling may be the most efficient and economy way for now. To achive Self-Directed Eduction, more human resource and finance is needed. A tradeoff way may be what Confucius had said, "teach Students in accordance of their aptitude".This "teach" is not a imposing one , but a directive one.
Hey if you're interested my mum has been pushing this form of education to other parents as an alternative for traditional schooling here's her channel if any of you are interested: ua-cam.com/channels/TtoPF0xieKOV-1bCIuueVw.html

Dez Miah children naturally mature as they move out of child play and learn what it is they will need. The very idea of this is suggesting that the child will be self motivated enough and actually want to pursue something to the point of finding out what needs to happen to accomplish the goal they have. If that means preparing for an SAT and getting into a good college, then hunkering down for how colleges learn, then so be it. It won't be a choice made from stressful and pushed deliberation. But rather an enjoyment to further something that actually interests them.
The main reason you "do not understand" is that you do not see many examples around you. You cannot study individual cases. You cannot talk to self-educated people. All you see is the "standard model" of schooling. This is how school system gains an entrenched position and weakens our ability to "think out of the box". To understand self-directed education you need a bit of study beyond the beaten path. In other words, we need a cultural paradigm shift before we can cure the malaise. Alliance for Self-Directed Education aims at sparking such a paradigm shift. Tough nut!
I know this comment is old, but I worked in advising for my college. College is often the first self-directed education experience for many young adults, and it shows! So many young adults don't make the transition well--one from being told what to do all the time, to needing to discipline themselves. College professors aren't going to follow up on students showing up and completing work. I would argue a self-directed learner will be better prepared. They may not attend at eighteen, or they may. Plenty of young adults who attended typical schooling k-12 are not ready to direct themselves and leave college shortly after beginning.

Actually SDE is a lot cheaper than imposed schooling
The Shift they obviously did not get far enough into the video to hear that. Chances are they only got eight seconds in.

Who else is here from their social classes.
Si el video está en inglés, ni siquiera tiene subtítulos en español, porque ponen el título en español? Las barreras que tienen las familias hispanas

Lol me Lily Lily
I don't understand how this type of education prepares students for college level work! I get it but it only makes for a great after school program.

A lot of kids shouldn't be focused on college anyway. Not everyone should, because they are more interested in learning a trade.
