DnB has been around since the 80's, yet dubstep came around late 90's.
Neither of them take elements from each other yet they both contain some of the same genres. Both genres take elements from two step garage, dub, reggae and funk. DnB just happened to please a more up-beat, rave group while dubstep (which was a lot calmer back then) pleased a more laid back group.
