In a game between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens.. Brad Marchand jumped Rem Pitlick after a late hit on captain Patrice Bergeron. We break down the importance of stepping up for your teammates in hockey.. and why the Boston Bruins have had so much success because of it.
From someone who hates the Bruins and especially Marchand, I love this. Defending teammates (especially a class act like Bergeron) is such a core part of the game and this is a perfect example.
As a die hard Broonz fan, I heartily concur & approve of this message. You don't cheap shot like that, little love tap, maybe, but the puck was outta there. If you have played the game and know how it's supposed to be played, I don't blame the Rat one bit.
Agreed, I'm NOT a Bruins fan, and think Marchand is a cheap rat on the ice. But this time I 100% support what he did.
If the refs called the shot to head penalty as it should have been, marchand would probably not have done it
ZACH BRAD SHOULD HAVE FOUGHT HIM STANDING UP
@@markparris6447 he turtled doofus
I would run through 10 brick walls for Saint Patrice
I concur with this statement
Prove it
Rangers fan here. Don’t like the bruins. But Patrice Bergeron is an amazing player, captain, and human being. He’s what an NHL captain should be. And I have to respect what the bruins have done this season, it is absolutely incredible.
I’d let Big Z take slap shots at my nuts for PB
Only 10? I'd run through all the brick walls for our lord and savior Patrice Bergeron
hitting a player like patrice like that is insane. the guy is as clean as they get.
He laid out Gallagher earlier that period
@@dbrugus if it’s done within the rules and is clean who cares. Hit PB all you want but don’t take a cheap shot at his head
@@dbrugus And it was done later in the period behind Habs net, when Gallagher had the puck, called forecheck- no one does it better because he plays with his feet and his brain more than anything- anticipation.
And a crosscheck to Hoffman's face is not ok either. Hoffman doesn't even hit.
LOL it's called hockey not tee ball. Your going to get hit.
Marchy is 100 percent a Bruin. Every game he give everything for the team and has done for years, this is just another example of that.
37 is going to the rafters about 10 seconds after Bergy retires, and at this rate #63 may be headed the same way. marchand's ratting gives Bergy all the space he needs to be Bergy. Teams used to take runs at Bergy all the time, now they have to pat a lot of attention to a very skilled rat on the same line, it's the saving of Bergeron.
@@hagamapamaand on top of all his ratting he can still fill up the scoresheet himself
"Bruin" is a word for gutless coward that can't fight :D
I'd hit my own team mate if he hit Bergeron like that, he's an absolute class act
Note how the Habs didn't exactly rush to Pitlick's aid. Tells you a lot.
@@wurm90125 Tells you a lot about what? Every player with the Canadiens that can fight is injured
@@GREG79201 Probably not a great idea in that case, to take runs at someone whose number is going to the rafters 45 seconds after he retires, just saying. No Boston Bruin is ever going to wear #37 again, and THAT'S the guy you take a run at when you have NOBODY around to protect you?
@@hagamapama He didn’t take a run at him. He finished a check. Jesus.
@@politicalbandwagon4989 wait thats finishing a check? lol its a little late of a hit there bud
I absolutely love that Marchand did that. I wish the Penguins had this kind of mentality. After years of watching Sid, Geno, Jake, and others get injured by cheap shots and late hits while their team mates just stand there like "ah ha, we'll get you back by scoring on the power play!" and they don't because the Pens power play has been predictable trash for about five years now.
Great point!
They’ve dished out there far share of dirty shite, Brad gives so I don’t expect players to hold back when they see him in a position to take liberties
Yyyyyeah, what team was Matt Cooke playing for when he ended Marc Savard's career with an elbow to the back of the head? you don't get to talk about cheap shots. you never get to talk about cheap shots again.
You are right. I think some opposing teams give a hit to Sid sometimes because they have some confidence that another Pen will not man-up. I remember the Bruins had a year that they had a problem with dishing out accountability (I think it was the year after Lucic left). I have confidence that the Pens dynamic will change, but hopefully BEFORE Sid retires!
@@hagamapama Exactly; never mind how Ulf Samuelsson, one of the dirtiest players in League history, ruined Cam Neely's career. I always hated that no Bruin decapitated Cooke that day.
If you're an opposing player or fan you hate Marchie. But if you're his teammate or a Bruins fan you absolutely love the guy. I'm a lifelong Bruins fan and it had me jumping out of my seat to see how quickly he had Bergeron's back. This shows what a tight knit group those guys are. They'll go to war for their teammates. The great thing about Marchand is he's got the skills to go with the rough stuff. Go Bruins!
Not necessarily true lol. I HATED Raffi Torres, even when he played for the Oilers. I'd feel the same about Marchand. I was worried about Kane, but he seems to have cleaned up his act a lot. He helps the team, but I'm always worried he'll pull something like he used to against Vegas.
Dudes a slew footing keebler elf bro. Don’t worry though, he’ll be back in the treehouse making fudge stripes after another Bruins playoff exit.

Jonathan and the wavering tradition of defending your teammates without hesitation or limit.
Don’t poke the Bear.
As a habs fan, I loved seeing marchand do this. Thats the kind of mentality the habs have been missing for a long time.
They had it big time in the 70's. THEY were the team to beat.
Im clearly agree
Doug Riseborough would never tolerate cheap shots at his mates
Let's not forget Chris "Knuckles" Nilan, John Kordic, Mike Keane, Mario Roberge... I could go on with a few more names from the 70s.
Larry "Bid Bird" Robinson, Pierre Bouchard, Mario Tremblay, Gilles Lupien.
That's all I have to say about that for now.
Go Habs Go
So happy to hear Monty say that
Great coach
Makes me sick the Stars let him go so quickly.
Players coach!
I had my doubts when they hired him. But damn I was wrong, what a hell of a coach he's been.
@@HarborSite-7he has the most exciting offensive system I’ve ever seen lol I love watching this team play
Damn straight, absolutely love this response by Marchand. I wish we would see more of it. It’s definitely essential to a team’s success. You can’t succeed without this element to your game!!!! That’s how the game should be played and is vital to playoff success.
Marchy and Bergy would do that for each other in a heartbeat, it's what makes them unique compared to other teams, they don't think about the consequences they will fight for each other in a heartbeat.
That's what brothers do 🖤💛
Chara would've picked up that player over his head and throw him over the glass - we need to keep the rivalry alive not only for playoff success but for the fans. Bergy and Brad will be friends to the grave so watch out!
In the Cup era we wouldn't have needed Chara. Campbell or Thornton would have stomped this guy into gravy.
Chara wouldn’t have just threw him thru the glass, he would’ve threw him across the galaxy.

My favorite part is how the goalie comes out of the net and is just watching like "yeah you probably shouldn't have done that"
What I find most impressive about this is that 63 knows his fighting skills are minimal at best, but still doesn't hesitate to protect his teammates.
Not only is it great to see Marchant sticking up for his team, it's great to see his coach backing his actions 100% and not pussy-footing around with media "We don't condone that kind of action" type bullshit
THAT is exactly WHY this group plays their collective asses off for Monty.....every game//night!!
he is one of them....he is a leader of men....he is cool AF.....he has their back NO MATTER WHAT
Right?! Own your actions. Don’t apologize when you did what you feel was right no matter who may dislike it. That’s called conviction and it’s been disappearing in our society. So glad to see Monty and Marchy show what it means to have conviction.
@@davemiller8215 I agree. He's always backing his guys, and when he does criticize them or their play it is just brutal honesty the way your friend gives you when you need a wake up call. LOVE having Monty

a coach makes a world of difference and the playoffs will reinforce that; barring injury, this team will go deep
first thing marchand every did where his team mates didnt avoid his eye contact for the balance of the game
This type of play is absolutely necessary in Hockey, in fact, I think it helped us win the cup in 2011 when one of the Vancouver players took out Horton with a dirty hit. After that moment, it gave a jolt to Boston's mental toughness and they started gaining momentum and they WON the cup despite being 2-0 down to start the series.
Having the league, the officials (on and off the ice) and 90% of the media in their corner didn’t hurt either.
@@jdmacgyver2062 Oh Christ, you lost, get over it.
@@maw4734 Nothing to get over here, just calling it the way I see it, I’ve seen plenty of dirty playoff series’ but never one as biased as the 2011 SCF.

@@maw4734 You’ve got a great team this year and are the cup favourites. Similar situation to 2011 except the shoe is on the other foot. A President’s Cup winner with a tough conference to get through. Somehow I don’t think any team will get away with the goon routine this time though.
The whole thing brought tears to my eyes. It was absolutely beautiful.
Long-time Bruins fan going back to Orr and Marchand is what the Black & Gold are all about-- tough, talented, always plays at 100%, and a guy every other team wishes was on theirs. He didn't even hesitate to sort this situation.
I’m a habs fan and by no means a bruins fan. Also a big fan of Pitlick and Bergeron, and have immense respect for Marchand (lol). March was so right in this play and I love to see this.
THIS. THIS is hockey.
I wouldn't call Marchand public enemy #1 anymore. Playing that style has certain consequences and pissing off fan's is usually the main one. But for the very few that play's his style and light's it up year after, you end up admitting to yourself that it wasn't anger it was envy. Marchand on any other top 10 team would immediately make them cup favorites. (In my opinion). Very few players could solve grittiness, toughness, scoring and leadership by themselves in a trade.
Imagine if Marchy had some size to go alone with all that!!!
@@kevinbedard27 Like maybe Cam Neely size? Maybe?
Relax bro, he has 1 cup. Pat Maroon has 3 in four years. 1 against the “top 10 Bruins”
@@hbulava I did say all around. Yeah Maroon has over 500 hits more than Marchand but over 800 p and 800 hits seems a bit better than less thann 300p and a bunch of hits. Saay what you want but 12 points and -6 with the best goalie in the world is not that impressive. Nevermind you're right, Kuch, Vas,Stamkos, Hedman ,Point had noothing to do with the cups. It was Perry and Maroon.
Pat Maroon is a Douche bag, and Kevin Bedard Size is not the Factor, Skill, Speed and smarts is the factor...

Marchy may be a rat, but ya can’t deny that he plays the game with a lot of heart and soul, which is something I respect wholeheartedly!
Also Bergy is as classy as they come, if its acceptable to swing in someone for hitting late it's him. Hell if Brad didn't I wouldn't be shocked if a fan ran on the ice and did it, Patrice is beloved in Boston
@@Drizzlybear1 if anyone even bumped into Bergeron and he was on my team, I’d make sure they went to the hospital with every bone in their body broken.

He's done a lot of growing up
Marchand would be a perfect Hab in many ways. Shoot, skate, and agitate, all at elite levels. It's literally how Montreal has usually preferred to build, is players like Marchy with speed skill and a bit of a dirty edge.

I completely agree and couldn't have said it any better. Every team should follow Marchand's example in standing up for Bergy. That was a dirty hit for sure and seeing him come to his aid was great. The best NHL players follow the lead of the late great Left Banke's song "Give The Man A Hand." A whole song about coming to someone's aid when they are down.
The Bruins are like a huge family of brothers that defend each other from all bullies. Love this team!
Pitlick effed around and found out. Love it!

The NHL is too busy promoting the gaze
As a Bruins fan, love all the boys and especially Marchand. He plays the game with soo much heart and passion. And him doing this was absolutely the right decision.

Plain and simple, it's what you do to protect your teammates. You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

May be he has being cheap in the past but don't include his excellent hip checks he does what he can to get even ... I love his tenacity and loyalty to his team/teammates.
If you hate on this play, then you hate hockey. Love to see a guy stand up for a teammate, stand up for their captain, and send a "no bullshit" message.

Handled it exactly right. Not a moment’s hesitation- cheap shot my captain here I come!
I can picture Bergy after the game in the lockerrrom..."finally Brad you got it right...this is what we mean when we tell you to lick someone"
Couldn't you argue this type of play engages your opponent in a rough style of game - And since only like 10 games from playoffs increases chances of costly injuries. Don't get me wrong I really like this style of hockey and it's super entertaining, so I'm only bringing up point from a team strategy point of view

It is imperative that you send a message. It just happened to be Marchand who was the guy who sent the message. It is of course a
good thing Marchand stood up for his captain but then again its Marchand. He'll hit anything that moves and usually has a a disposition

As à Montreal fan love this reply I just goes to show that every team should act this way if I’m correct Nick Suzuki got hit late against I don’t remember who and Josh Anderson came to his captain’s defence so did Marchand for Bergeron still don’t like Marchand like a lot other teams fans but got to give props for the reaction even if I support they’re long time rival I still think pitlick shouldn’t have hit late as always a pleasure to see a classic like this although there’s one more between them in the last game for the bruins and habs I’m pretty the bruins will put there AHL team then but i hope to see 3 more great rivalry games by September 😃

Pitlick got SMOKED by Krejci in the third, nice game Rem...
That was prime Krejci. he got the pick and time just seemed to slow down as krejci got space and waited for the goalie to commit. that's what Krejci is when he's at his best.

Absolutely love it!
Bergy is one of the most respectful players in the game, so it really pisses the Bruins off when other players go after Bergeron, who is one of the nicest guys in the league. It certainly won't be tolerated by Marchand - EVER.
I like how marchands beak is keeping his chin strap from coming all the way up over his head in the thumbnail 😂
You just don't put a late hit on a Captain. That novice learned the hard way.
Late 😛🙃😂😅 Milliseconds after the puck had gone.
Great game. Surprised the Habs were in that for that long. I agree with the video, but they went after Evans a little too much after what wasn't that serious an incident. I enjoy the scrums, but not the cheapshots. Especially to the head(Hoffman and near the end Evans)
Are you referring to him bumping Swayman? He was 20 feet away when the cover was made and 10 feet when the whistle blew. He had time to make an effort not to do that. It wasn't a "protect our goalie from danger" thing, it was a "don't disrespect the game of hockey" thing. There was nobody around him and he wasn't bumped into Swayman, he made a conscious effort to bump him and give him a snow shower. The crease belongs to the goalie, especially when the play is over because he covered the puck.
I'm not saying Evans did anything wrong there, in fact I love those kinds of plays because on-ice drama is hilarious to me. But more importantly, the unwritten rule of "don't mess with our goalie" is great for the game. Mess with the goalie, you get the McAvoy. True teammates stick up for each other, no matter the degree.

Great in theory but no one is terrified of Marchand. I doubt there's anyone in the NHL that would run from a fight with him.
You missed the whole point!!!!!!!
@@kmurphy739 No I didn't. "Standing up for your teammates is an important part of the game because it makes the other team think twice about taking cheap shots." Except Marchand does not strike fear in people's hearts so his response does not deter anyone else from taking a cheap shot. Players have been "paying" for their cheap shots as long as hockey has been a sport and yet here we are a hundred plus years in the NHL and people are still taking cheap shots at the best players in almost every game. So, great in theory but it doesn't actually deter anyone.
The perfect opposite example is what happened to Ryan Miller after he got run over and nobody on his team budged an inch. Miller was never the same.
This is what the Leafs don't have, and it pains me because I know that my team doesn't come close to one of our 2 greatest rivals. This year's Bruins are one of the best ever, and if we meet them in the playoffs, I'll give us a 5-10% chance. I may be being generous.
