Just come across this great video...... Nice to know there are dedicated people who will brave extreme conditions for their art..... I am taken aback appreciating the views that the passengers must have enjoyed..... Obviously the last 60 years of partial neglect has taken its toii.
Done Smardale a few yrs ago. Weather was a lot better. Its a great walk. Plenty of old bridges still left. The viaduct was going to be demolished, but instead the money was put to a trust to preserve and maintain and look after it. Thank goodness it was saved
@Wobbly Runner Exploring yes definitely agree. It's a great structure and history behind the men that built the viaduct. There's an old carriage in the carpark Not original, but got information in there. Low gill is another great viaduct, well worth a visit
I was scrolling through UA-cam & found this gem Paul! Oh you looked drenched it knows how to rain in Cumbria. Beautiful scenic railway & the map where all the lines were & so many lost. The sheep stole the show! Lovely walk with loads to see. ❤😊👍
Cheers Carol. That was a very wet day 😄. I enjoyed a nice sit in a sauna after this. I keep meaning to pay another visit in warmer weather, but it is a long way to go.
Brave man going on holiday in Cumbria in January...I lived near Ingleton, long ago..Watching this it only confirms that I made the correct move retiring to the south of france...
Well done. Tough day! Another great Vid. The use of old/maps photos really enhances your work. Please keep that up. I’m from South Yorks originally but Smardale and the Dales have been my ‘patch’ for a good few years. You should come back and do the walk in Summer. It is life enhancing.
Great video Paul, foul weather mind. I spent a lot of time in Cumbria on my first stint with DRS in late 90s and I do remember a lot of days like that. I have a friend who is now in his 90s who was a fireman and driver at West Auckland and worked over that line. I think summer Saturday trains to and from Blackpool worked over the line until closure. I would love to be proved wrong but I don't think the stainmoor ever saw a mainline diesel when it was open as a through route. DMUs were used but locos may have been to heavy for the metal viaducts further east Cheers Russ
👍 I never realised that. I have seen picture of DMU, but now you've mentioned it you're right. I did read about those summer specials to Blackpool. That sounds like quite an adventure.
I thought that you might've had a swim along that track bed!!! Seriously, that was an excellent example of how desolate Cumbria can be, yet still retaining its beauty even on a day like that. The viaduct was something else completely, a magnificent achievement building it in such a deserted area. I hope you managed to get dry quickly once you got back.
I wonder if the Eden railway could run train back over that viaduct would it still take a train or would it need massive sums of money and tim 🤔 I would definitely be a beautiful branch line
Nicely done mate great video i was exploring the SCL viaducts via youtube and noticed this disused one which led me to your video , great to get 2 viaducts on one walk . I am aiming to walk over Blea Moor tunnel via the vent shafts from Ribblehead to see Dent Head and Arten Gill up to Dent station sticking as close to the track bed as possible is that possible i wonder or am i being to greedy ?
Cheers Christopher. I remember back in the 90s when I was doing my Duke of Edinburghs, we pretty much did that route. Up from Ribblehead, over the tunnel mouth then up onto Whernside. We dropped down into Dent head and followed the valley and eventually camped just outside Dent village. Memory hazy but I remember a great view of the railway heading off towards Dent from above 😊
Would have been a travesty had they demolished the viaduct, I can never quite get my head round when such engineering architecture is destroyed. Nearer to home I'm sure you're aware of the Horns Bridge viaduct that once loomed over the main road into Chesterfield, sadly I don't remember seeing it for real but a disgrace that it was demolished 😡 I guess it's all down to who's going to foot the bill to maintain them
You're right. And I suppose it all comes down to money. Plenty of examples kicking about sadly with the same story. Happening now with smaller bridges that are being taken down/infilled as nobody wants the liability. Thank god they saved this viaduct.
Gorgeous ❤

Ex -Pat in Maine here. Just seen this video and wanted to thank you for your persistence in crap weather. Much appreciated.
Thanks very much Andrew.
😄 I still remember how appalling the weather was, but was well worth it to see the viaduct.

What you have explored under the circumstances is great,a lovely walk and exploration showing the line and it’s features.Well done!
Cheers Tony 👍
Many thanks for taking us along, if we only get out when the sun shines we wouldn't get out much (in a normal year).
😄 I seem to always be sat at work on those sunny days
Awesome engineering to build that line many thanks for putting up with the terrible weather fantastic video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it. Well worth the effort.

Haha Cumbria holidays in January. That's the Yorkshireman in me looking for the cheap option 😄. Wish I was going this year.
Facinating, another great video
Cheers 👍🙂

Fantastic cheers David. You're right. That would be great to do in the summer.
Certainly a great area love to visit the viaduct one day
Well worth the effort Andrew 👍
Nice. What an interesting place. I think your filming/editing in the harsh weather really adds to the video.
Cheers Scott 👍🙂
Another great video in such difficult conditions. We really appreciate your hard work !
Cheers John. All good fun 🙂👍
At 25 min. My grandad live in the house on the right as a boy. His mother worked in the pub at Ravenstonedale.
Thanks for braving the bad wheather this was a really interesting video to view.
Thanks Mary 👍🙂

The wind sound wasn't as bad as you think by the way, added to the wild remote atmosphere, another interesting video 👍🏻
Cheers Lee. You're right. It was nowhere near as bad as I imagined when I got the footage home :)

Well I did jump in the hot tub straight away, so I suppose I did get a bit wetter first 😄
But at least it was warm.
@@WobblyRunner Glad to hear it!!
Thanks for the tour today, Paul. An excellent trip. Wish the weather was more cooperative. Cheers buddy! 😊
Thanks Martin 👍 it just makes those sunny days even more enjoyable 😉

That would be a great sight. I guess it would need a lot of money spent. There's quite a few bit on the track upto that to replace too I believe.

Excellent, looking forward to the disused lines of southern France 😂
😄 me too
The second K in Kirkby Stephen is silent. It's pronounced Kirby......
