I originally choreographed this piece in 2002. It’s the story of me growing up as a teenager in Knoxville, Tennessee in the late 80s. I was 16/17 and not out yet and I was afraid to tell my mother that I was gay. We usually went grocery shopping together on Saturday nights. The Kroger was near the University and only a block away from the most popular gay bar in town. So lots of gay couples would be there in the aisles grabbing treats before heading to the bar. My mom was oblivious to the fact that I kept sneaking away to other aisles to watch and flirt with the other gay men shopping there. Those interacting helped me see that I wasn’t alone and that gay people weren’t scary, they were fun and normal. Years later, when I had the chance to set this piece, I told my story through dance. Since 2002, other gay choruses have reproduced this piece. That makes me very proud. Thank you SMC for featuring my work and helping me tell my story. I am grateful. 🙏🏻
