The Zenith Chronomaster is one of those watches that took me totally by surprise. I checked one out at an AD in Las Vegas, and it simply blew my mind. The size, the subtlety of the registers, the unbelievable finishing of the movement, the 10th second chronograph hand--all of these things conspired to make me fall in love. This watch is now near the top of my list. Thanks for the great suggestions, Teddy.
Teddy you have helped me confirm that 36mm to 38mm is perfect size. And I’ve experimented with even smaller (ex Tissot rock watch) and enjoy the smaller watches.
I have pivoted into collecting 38mm open case back watches rather than just whatever tickles my fancy scrolling through eBay or Reddit. I have found some actual direction so much more satisfying.
I'd like to add more 38mm watches to this video. 1. Field & aviation Breitling Navitimer 38 Hamilton Aviation Pioneer 38 Christopher Ward Sandhurst 4. Dive Certina DS Action Diver 38
I enjoyed this series and your suggestions. As far as suggestions for upcoming videos in the series, I have two: 1. 36MM for men. Watches in the 1950's and 1960's were 36 MM for men, plus in today's market, 36MM offers great value. I have a 6.5" wrist, and am not sure if 36MM is too small or not. Plus what is the resale value 5 or 10 years from now? 2. Green dial watches in different price segments, say up to $1,000, 1-$5,000, and $5-10,000.
That Titanium Hamilton Khaki Field is simply superb. Could easily be my "one and done", but I'm not that kinda guy. After selling my Field Mechanical, which I deeply regret, this will definitely be an amazing addition to my collection.
For the dive watch category I would venture to ask everyone to take a look at Certina DS Action Divers 38mm. Fabulous price-to-performance affordable automatic watch with Powermatic 80 movements and 300m of water resistance. Certina does not have any authorized dealer in the US, and in terms of pricing it is roughly at the same level as Seiko and Citizen automatic watches, so I guess it is understandable that it does not receive the attention it deserves. But Certina and Mido are my two "gold standard" affordable watch brands now.
The Zenith Chronomaster Original is probably my favorite on this list. I know the CMS is the most hype Zenith right now, but after handling both I personally prefer the Original in virtually every way.

I am really looking forward to more on this series. I am on the large wrist size myself so looking forward to some of the larger case sizes episodes. That said I am also always interested in how watches just fit for size vs just their mm case size. For example I am over 300lbs, competed in strongman and powerlifting and just lifted weights most of my life. So along with larger wrists I tend to take up space in general. Don’t get me wrong I am super happy watches moved away from the bigger is better mentality that seemed prevalent in the early 2000s. But it can actually can be really difficult to judge watch size for larger persons. It seems 44mm often fits nice for me, like I love how my Casio Duro or Orient Kanno feels. But my Seiko 4th gen monster is 42mm and just by design it seems to also fit perfectly for me. So I think maybe I am overlooking even smaller watches that sit on the wrist differently. I have been really interested in a Hamilton Automatic. I was concerned even the 42mm version might look too small. But now I am thinking it might fit my size perfect. Being in a small town I also don’t get a lot of opportunity to try the watches on first. I do own an 37mm Seiko SNK and it just feels too small even though I love it and still wear it. Maybe it would be really interesting to have some different sized models of all different body and wrist sizes and have them wear different sized watches to see how they fit. Might make a good addition the blog.
Loving this series. Put my vote in for 36mm... I'm starting to appreciate the more subdued under-the-radar nature of this size and would love to get some ideas of what else is out there. So far I've owned the Lorier Falcon and Longines Conquest VHP in 36mm.
I have a 16.5cm wrist and 36-38mm is my usual sweet spot but I recently got a 34mm OP and I’m loving the smaller size and proportions and just overall comfort. I’m glad smaller watches are making a comeback! One of my most-worn watches when I first got into the hobby was a fashion watch in 34mm so it feels like I’ve come full circle in a way; would love to see a video with even smaller case sizes!
Timex, and a host of solid microbrands, have 38mm timepieces worth including in this list. Might be good to not always look at the brands you repeatedly mention, and/or are in your online store. It's becoming so predictable.
Really interesting Vid Teddy, as i have a small wrist around 6.25 i have always chosen watches around the 39mm to a max of 41mm( depending on the lug to lug being less than 49mm) . Recently purchased a Tudor Black bay 36 with silver dial and love the way its looks and feels on the wrist, would like to see a vid on 36 mm options
Am I the only one that requires date function on an “everyday” watch. Day/date even better but date minimum. I feel it’s the single most used complication for me.
Teddy, can you make a video of the most colorful watches but for the office? I'm an architect and I'm thinking of Nomos Club Campus Pink or Brew Metric or some Louis Errand... Thanks! I love the videos
Great content as always, but would have been better if the Certina DS Action Diver in 38mm was included in the dive watch category, plus the Hamilton Pilot Pioneer in 38mm for the aviation category. Both are solid choices and gives awesome value for money! :)
I recently acquired my grail watch, which is a 36mm Explorer 124270. I have a 6 3/4" wrist, so I thought I would struggle with the size. My larger watches sensitized me to smaller cases, but I absolutely love this thing and now many of my watches feel too big. I'd like to see a vid like this on 36mm's. I know with some collectors, 38mm seems to be this unspoken minimum size for men's watches, but I'm really digging smaller watches now. Not sure where my collecting will take me next, but I suspect I'm gonna avoid anything larger than 40mm....that is unless I pull the trigger on a Speedy.
chronograph thickness is something we really need a parameter reset on. the speedmaster everyone for the past 60 years has been just fine with is 14mm. people freak out about 14mm anything today. the 3861 sapphire is 13.2. it should be very enlightening that it blew people's minds when the new speedy 57 slid in under 13 at like 12.8 a few months back. thin chronos: any piaget, bvlgari, high horology, daytona, breguet. that's basically it for sub 12.5. 15+ is a big thickness no question about it, and we can tell 15 vs 12 or vs 10, but we need to stop kidding ourselves that we can tell 13.8 vs 14.2 or 15.5 vs 14.7 etc. maybe when we are trying on one after the other, back and forth, but at no other time can we tell differences that small, ESPECIALLY when the top 2-3mm of thickness is from a domed crystal anyway. at the same time as im preaching all this about thickness acceptance, PLEASE IWC WOULD YOU THIN DOWN YOUR GOD DAMN CHRONOS FFS
Great roundup. From Hamilton I recently got the h76205530 Khaki Aviation Pilot Pioneer in 38mm and cannot stop to look at this amazing dial and admire the build quality. Love it.
It’s cool as hell that the smaller fellas can wear awesome watches that fit their wrists and their tastes but Teddy, holler at me if you want a big guy’s opinion. I’m 6’4”, I weigh 240-250 (depending on the breakfast my beautiful wife starts my day with) and my wrists are almost exactly 8”. My stature closes me off to some sick watches and I kind of live vicariously through your videos and Ben’s Watch Club videos (I’ll pay my way to be there if you two ever collaborate because there’s no way that you and Ben wouldn’t be best friends right off the bat!). Teddy i’ll never admit how many hours i’ve spent watching your videos but i’m happy to admit how much you’ve helped me to appreciate the art of watches. Lastly, come on down here to Texas and I’ll show you around. We have some pretty cool horological history, believe it or not!
I won’t buy an acrylic crystal. Don’t understand Sinn. Charge an extra $10 and put a sapphire crystal on the watch. I don’t want to buff out my watches.
For solar watches you usually go for Citizen but not sure if they have any models in that specific size/style. I have wanted a solar watch for a long time but cannot decide between them, Casio has some nice ones as well.

Funny on the timing of this video. Just got my Hamilton Kkaki with the H-50 yesterday. I read MANY reports of this movement having issues and many being DOA right out of the box before buying but put that down to yeah, the occasional one will be DOA and then also take into account that many will just hamfist wind the thing like a gorilla and blow right past the fully wound stop. This overhyped piece of junk is going back tomorrow first thing. The fact that they keep pushing out this defective movement will keep me away from buying another Hamilton ever.
Is the GP laureato actually still available in 38mm? I was under the impression that it was discontinued many months ago? Crossing my fingers you know something the rest of us don't about its comeback?!
For my size wrist, I am 38 to 40 mm, but I gravitate more towards 40 to 42 mm except for field watches. 38mm looks the best, 36 is just too small and harder to read. Eyes are not as good as they used to be.
