Billionaire investor Sam Zell told CNBC on Wednesday he’s not ready to endorse a candidate for president yet, saying the big question is whether Democrat Joe Biden would run the nation more as a centrist or tack hard left.
“Let’s put it like this: If you told me that the Obama-Biden plan or methodology was going to repeated for the next four years, I would be a lot less worried than I am now,” said Zell.
The outspoken founder of Equity Group Investments, who describes himself as a right-leaning independent, doesn’t agree with all of the policies under former President Barack Obama and former Vice President Biden, saying in a “Squawk Box” interview that a failed income redistribution strategy in the previous administration exacerbated the nation’s wealth inequality.
Zell said the next 2½ months in the run-up to the November presidential election should reveal whether Biden will be able to embrace his moderate roots or act as a “placeholder” for the takeover of the Democratic Party by the “radical left,” whose policies would “lead to the destruction of our economic system.”
“I think that anything that is focused on dividing the country is not a positive thing,” said Zell, answering a question about President Donald Trump’s approach to governing. However, Zell has in the past expressed support for the president’s business-friendly policies such as cutting the corporate tax rate and rolling back Obama-Biden era business regulations.
Fellow billionaire investor Barry Sternlicht, who has also supported Trump’s economic policies, went a step further than Zell, telling CNBC on Tuesday that he would “probably vote for Biden right now.”
“I think that on the margin, the nation needs to heal and I think we need to get back together, and I don’t think we’re going to do that with the rhetoric from the right,” said the Starwood Capital founder, who like Zell expressed caution about the divisiveness of the Trump White House.
Sternlicht also said he’s in the middle politically. “I’m fiscally conservative and socially liberal, like most of my peers, and we don’t have a party. We kind of just wing it.”

@Jerry Sherman True, I used the sports team owners as an example, glad you agree. I do think the rich need to be taxed more, however, as they do have more to offset the weight of governments needs. They have also benefited from public funds themselves (whether from public roads for their businesses, city planning, water and electric utilities, and even providing the money and knowledge to help bring about the internet as a means for many businesses). It is patriotic to pay your taxes, even though I hate doing it. But yes, we should definitely have a means to have a better way to say how that money is allocated.
I don't hate the idea of opening vote to all citizens. in theory a true democracy sounds just, and it is hard to argue against an ideal like that. However, I could still see issues in its actual execution were other people's votes were bought by wealthier people as the "vote seller" would have easy access and not much commitment. While annoying, I guess I am just thinking for the first time about how a system with either in person voting or mail-in ballot voting does tie it to a specific person, and make it a little more burdensome and planning needed to buy a vote. FYI: I am completely pro mail-in voting and pro-early voting and pro larger access to voting locations and expanding former felons voting rights.

I was merely trying to have a scholarly look into the idea you proposed yourself, and what it would look like to try and implement it in reality, as far as voting. Beyond just talk, like what would it have to look like for it to be a fair solution. I do not believe in disenfranchising anyone's vote, including those that do not agree with me. I believed I made that abundantly clear before. But no worries, it doesn't seem as though you were up for laying out what any solution would have to look like in reality, to avoid corruption (which is what I what discussing). I hope you have a method to fairly provide ALL people with "voter ID" including those who have none now, and make the process of getting one free and ability for someone to get their verified ID easily. If not, then it just help disenfranchise others, which I thought was the point we were both saying. But alas, you will disregard.
@Jerry Sherman I will also admit, that when you referenced block chain technology, I had believed you meant that you wanted a remote digital way for all citizens to vote, make the process easier for them to do from home. My scenario was trying to think out how to make that safe and fair. It appears you were not meaning that and only wanted in person voting. But for EVERY CITIZEN to be able to vote every day on bills, throughout their work day, and reading up on everything doesn't sound like it could work either without expanding access to voting. So I agree with you. Given this "it has to only be in person voting" solution. You are correct, your own suggestion solution to get rid of politicians could never work. Enjoy your day, continuing to call those with varied opinions unreasoned names.

These are people who don’t understand what money is. It’s very hard to explain to them what is value, and that a piece of paper simply represents said value but at any moment that could change. If we give everyone 10k a month for example, what’s to say tomorrow those dollars now are worthless, companies are like machines that charge us whatever is valuable or represents that value. To not go on too long, at the end of the day they better hope their policies don’t destroy value and life doesn’t care about their feelings because what will happen will happen, and if the value is destroyed then all the will be able to do is wipe themselves with that money. It was Reagan who ended progressive redistributive taxation, and basically destroyed the middle class. Reagan cut the top tax rate to 29%, it's now 20%. And we have a massive poverty class now and a political oligarchy.

Erik Toro thats bc Scandinavia has a very small population that makes it possible to just distribute the country’s wealth and keep everyone’s belly full despite the lack of any significant economic output as a result of people not working. You cant feed 300 million people like that, you need economic productivity and to have it you need to have and support investors who create jobs and productivity, and you need the people to actually work those jobs to make it all happen instead of sitting home and receiving checks from the government like Scandinavia.

Scandinavia has some of the highest productivity outputs of any region in the world including some of the worlds most recognized corporations and new unicorns. It also has one of the lowest unemployment figures and highest quality of life. It also has a higher count of billionaires than the US per population size. If you go by state to state in the US, the same should be possible. Distribution of wealth allows for more people to get educated and progress rather than stay in the same cycle of poverty and only allow for a few to progress. Understand the benefits of social capitalism.
