After the horrible deaths of Chandra's parents, I honestly thought we would never hear from Jimmy again. I'm just glad that he has been able to move forward with his life.
Jimmie was all but washed up when he retired from Cup (compared to how he ran for the first 15 years of his career). Then, he went and embarrassed himself in IndyCar for a couple of years, and now he's back... running a partial schedule in a completely different type of Cup car than he last ran in, for a different manufacturer and a different team. Who, in their right mind, honestly expected him to do anything of significance under these circumstances? He needs to hang it up while he still has some of his dignity intact.
Jimmy struggled more with the Camaro than Gordon did with the COT and the falloff was immediate. He's not going to go out like Tom Brady with one last ring. Maybe he's just a guinea pig for "stuff" although that's hard to do these days. Love your channel!
Jimmie don’t listen to these guys who have never done anything in their life. It took the current cup drivers a full year to figure out this newer car. You keep racing as long as you as want you will always be 7 times, one of the best ever and will always have your dignity.
Not only that, but the team he's racing for (and co-owns) is at, or near the bottom of the totem pole among teams in the sport, and we see the results. What Noah Gragson's doing this season in the #10 car is another example of that, because Stewart-Haas Racing is only a middle-tier team now, but it still runs circles around Legacy Motor Club, and Gragson's becoming a top 10 runner after not being able to get out of his own way in the races he drove for LMC last year. Add to that the fact that Jimmie's never been the same after that crash at Pocono in 2017 (the week after his final victory), and we see a driver that's replicating what happened with Richard Petty, A.J. Foyt, and Darrell Waltrip, and not replicating what happened with Mario Andretti, Al Unser, Sr. (to some degree), Jeff Gordon, and most recently, Kevin Harvick, who were all still very competitive in their final years.
@cjs83172 great to see you still leaving your pearls of wisdom! When Racing Reference still had the comments sections, I thoroughly enjoyed your contributions.
Kenny, thanks for bringing attention to JJ!!! There are so many naysayers about JJ racing again in NASCAR and what his performance now will taint his legacy? How about this…JJ is a competitor, doesn’t matter what he tries. His legacy was already established before he went to Indy or ran Garage 56 at LeMans. So true about the new car. Odd that Chevy discontinued Jimmy's car a year after he won his 7th title so he had to learn a new car and he hasn't been the same since. 2017 wasn't a bad year for Jimmy, just didn't work out. When they switched to the Camaro....., he was toast.
@@tobylou8until they changed the Camaro nose Hendrick and all Chevy teams struggled, Chase was the only driver winning outside of Austin Dillon winning the Daytona 500.
He is old and not as good. Whatever it is, that 2017 Pocono wreck changed him as a driver, combined with his family issues, he is not as good. I think he needs to retire for good for the sake of his career.
The cold hearted truth is Jimmy was an average driver in the Busch/Xfinity series. When he came up to Hendrick he had the Best eqipment with arguably the greatest crew chief in Chad Knaus. Without Knaus he never won a race after Knaus left. At best Jimmy wins less than a 3rd of the races he won and No championships without Knaus.

I can’t imagine what Jimmie himself is thinking. He needs practice, laps, laps, laps. And he can’t other than the simulator. Even Heim who filled in for Jones beat Jimmie at Dover. His last three years in Cup were absolutely nothing to write home about which when that was happening people thought…,what is going on? Is it all to do with that Pocono crash in 2018 I think it was? Cup needs more practice period. 20 mins why bother, that’s actually wasting money with tires and fuel. Make it 1 hour with two sets of tires and three cans of fuel or whatever could get them an hour.
I agree that there is too many races. Should be 25 races all at different tracks. We had high hopes of getting a Cup race in Colorado at Pikes Peak International Raceway but NASCAR made it go away. Instead we have 2@Kansas, 2@Texas, 2@Fontana (remember Fontana?) and the Coliseum (Why?). I know why- Money talks and BS walks. OK I'm done. Great job Kenny! Thanks.
I have the utmost respect for Jimmy. I never heard any driver say a bad thing about him. I never saw him in a fight with anyone let alone bash another driver. He always was so nice in the interviews he did and just an outstanding human being. Fast forward to today and with the races he has done he is embarrassing himself and I'm sure he knows it. He should have quit when he was on top of his game and let it be. His finishes are just horrible and I'm sure he realizes it.
Its not driver talent that wins these races in NASCAR or Formula 1 Or Indycar its the money the team has and the crew. This is a prime Example as to why Fans have left NASCAR. NASCAR brought Jimmy back to attract old fans and keep fans and he is a Side Show like what Babe Ruth was or what Richard Petty was at the last 5 years of his career. Or what Kenny Wallace was the last 4 or 5 years of his career running in back marker stuff.
I think it's time to start thinking about the possibility that he's really just a slightly above average Cup driver that won everything when he was driving the best car in the garage and had the best crew chief in the garage, but hasn't been able to do anything without those two things.
Just like every grade athlete, they pass their prime I think that applies to this situation. He’s just racing for fun at this point. He’s an old man. you look at the NASCAR drivers after their, peak Stewart, kenseth, jr, kahne, harvick, Newman… once they get pass that age they get worse… . It’s like any other sport. You’re good at it for so long until you’re not every person will have a downfall in any sport . You get to that age where you’re just not good anymore and past your prime and that’s what Jimmie is. I think another big factor is they are mediocre team, don’t have fast cars and not even top 15… that’s another huge thing. If Jimmie were in great equipment he would at least be in the top 15. Not saying he would be contending for wins, not saying he would even be in the top five or top 10, but he would be better than what he is now.
@@bostonwarrior4824 then how do you explain his mediocrity in the Busch series? After one win and a best series finish of 8th he moves up to Cup and gets 3 wins and top 5 in points as a rookie. You do that by getting the best ride and best crew chief in the sport. He has never been successful without CK.
@@GoPetty43 he barely raced in the Busch series. It doesn’t matter, dude he was able to come in the cup series and dominate right away. There’s been many drivers where It’s the other way around like Austin Cindric, Chase, Briscoe, Harrison Burton, who dominate in the Xfinity series and come out to be nobody in the cup series… he was with the same Coochie for almost 20 years. Of course they’re never gonna split apart if they’ve had that much success. A part of his success was on Chad, but you have to be a great race car driver to dominate and win seven championships, especially five in a row when no other driver could ever stop him. He was so dominating in the 2000. Quite frankly, he could’ve had over eight championships.
@@bostonwarrior4824 he spent two full seasons there. That's not really a barely scenario. Most drivers that come up to Cup aren't going to an elite ride. All three you mentioned are with teams that were once strong teams, but have not been at that level in years. Two have really struggled with the new car and the third has won 2-3 races in the last 30 years. He was dominant. Nobody is questioning that. But it was not because of his driving. If the car wasn't good he couldn't do anything with it. He won over 10% of his races with CK on the box and less than 3% when he wasn't on it. And he also got help from NASCAR. It's not an accident that during the days of Lowe's Motor Speedway he averaged a 7th place finish and won 6 of 16 times there, but after that he averaged a 17th place finish and won twice out of 20 races.
@@GoPetty43 you’re just mad he has seven championships with Richard Petty. That’s all salty you are. Every race track has a sponsor that an NASCAR driver has on their car. It’s called good marketing. NASCAR didn’t help him out he straight out, went there and won and dominated.
The word ‘athlete’ is a bit over used here and my favorite sport is Motorsorts. A race driver especially today is very fit compared to the old days but they can not be compared to other sport athletes.
Charlie nailed it. JJ just invested in a team, millions of $ being spent on this new car. Getting some seat time will help his team and give him valuable insight into managing.
He doesn't need to help Toyota lol they have way better drivers then he is at this point......and how's that help .... learn how to put the wrap on 😂😂😂😂
I never was a fanatical fan of Jimmy. But I always felt he did not get the respect he deserved. Unfortunately the new car does not showcase better drivers as much in my opinion.
JJ won't win a race, but for him to collect data can work, he can throw a crazy set up in car to see if it works without his two main drivers suffering
First of all, he’s too old and he hasn’t run these cars in a while and they’re totally completely different from what he used to run so it’s gonna take him a little while to get used to it. Plus the team he owns (the cars aren’t very strong). Like I would’ve thought for sure this team would’ve been good now that they are Toyota. but man, they really haven’t improved much, especially compared to last year. I would’ve expected Toyota to bring a lot more power for Jimmie and that way he would be at least competing in the top 15. But no he’s running 30th every race. They are clearly unnderperforming as a whole organization.
Mj was told by NBA to go away for awhile. There was a huge gambling story involving him and believed..why his father was murdered. The NBA TOLD him to go try Baseball or something for awhile, lay kinda low. His baseball sucked,...went in minors for awhile then came back to nba.
Jimmie johnson doesnt have enough seat time in this new car. Hes definitely not washed he has alot more distractions going on in his life now. Inlaws passed away, hes a owner now and with a manufacturer he is completely unfamiliar with. This is coming from a super fannof jimmie met him several times at Phoenix.
Not apples to apples comparing JJ to athletes that came back in other sports. Other sports never changed to a ball with drastically different characteristics.
Magic Johnson retired for four years after announcing his positive HIV test. Mario Lemieux (NHL) retired for three years and came back to play 5 more years. He had the highest Points per game average the entire time. But you are so right. Jimmie retiring basically for 4 years from Nascar and coming back to a new car, then switching to Toyota. I thought his talent would at least make him competitive to a degree.
It was very obvious that JJ was not the same after his Pocono 2017 crash, and then he goes to Indy Racing and has what can only be described as an embarrassment of a career, then he comes back to NASCAR with a new car thats questionable in quality and drivability, and its very obvious he just doesn't have it anymore. He should go the route of Junior and run a Xfinity race here and there if he wants to remain a driver. As far as the schedule length, dont touch it. The two months without NASCAR is so boring, as I dont give a flying flip about "The Foosball"
Just look at the crowds. With the price of tickets and then add in food beer and the cost of driving to the races under Bidens economy. Fans can't afford to pay attention. Thanks.
There should be 2 races a week one on the weekend and one during the week. 75 races a year Booyaa!!
Or that. But that means more Fox.
I'm still not watching NFL football!!
His finishes are just horrible and I'm sure he realizes it.
yes
All of JJ’s success was with Chad as crew chief. Yes he can drive but it takes a team to win
The great Rocky Blyer played for pitsbirg steelers!!!!!
Hey Charlie my wife's family is from the Kalamazoo area
Its not driver talent that wins these races in NASCAR or Formula 1 Or Indycar its the money the team has and the crew. This is a prime Example as to why Fans have left NASCAR. NASCAR brought Jimmy back to attract old fans and keep fans and he is a Side Show like what Babe Ruth was or what Richard Petty was at the last 5 years of his career. Or what Kenny Wallace was the last 4 or 5 years of his career running in back marker stuff.
It was superceded on Fox by bowling.
Happy to see Jimmy back on the track. So many memories with jimmy winning 🏆.
No, make it a race. I only go for the race the rest of it I skip I think of why the ticket prices are so high. It’s for all the other non-race events.
Connor mcgregor feels like has been out a while, he’ll fight chandler this summer. Although he never retired.
The word ‘athlete’ is a bit over used here and my favorite sport is Motorsorts. A race driver especially today is very fit compared to the old days but they can not be compared to other sport athletes.
I can't explain it. I understand the car is way different. And he's not running a Hendricks car. But I expected the goat to be in the top 20.
Phoenix has two races a year and sells out both.
Charlie nailed it. JJ just invested in a team, millions of $ being spent on this new car. Getting some seat time will help his team and give him valuable insight into managing.
That's what I think trying to figure out that new car to help his team and Toyota
Football, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer pail in comparison to NASCAR. NASCAR is the only sporting event that is watched on my TV in my home.
It's the only sport that you can be mediocre at, and if you have enough money, you can try and compete at the highest level. That sucks.😢😢
That is a real good joke.
Gotta love green screens
King Herman
Aldi bread all the way
Are you telling me nobody's won a race 50 years old a 50 year olds never won an CUP race? He's going for his eighth championship.😊
Put him in a good car Then you could see if he still has it. Hard to tell with Legacy
I love Nascar but I live in North Idaho, Not a track even close. Jimmie Johnsons issue is he is in a Toyota. He should have went to a Chevy team.
Easy he doesn’t have Chad Kanaus anymore. Also not at Hendrick Motorsports.
I've been watching NASCAR since 72 and was still a huge fan until Bubba brought in the race grift and BLM into NASCAR. And what really made me blow chunks all over myself when all these beta drivers pushed Bubbas car downt pit road i was done along with thousands of others and NASCAR biting into the woke 💩 sandwich was pathetic and now he is out playing the victim because he gets negative feed back and its pathetic to us long time fans to see a millionaire play the victim. If Raja C. Is smart he will stay away from Bubba. Ryan Dungee.
who the hell spends two grand a year to watch football lol?!?! I've never spent a dime to watch a game. To be honest both don't have my attention like they used to. Outside of big races or football games I could care less about missing one to do something else. Both have turned their backs on fans and what made them great.... As far as Jimmy goes it's easy to win when he got away with cheating for years and this just proves it even more so
next gen is not it
Fernando Alonso
What about Muhammad Ali - lost 4 years to his draft dodging conviction and was world champion again. I think Jimmie is more trying to sort out the new car than expecting to win.
Very sad to see Jimmy struggle after years of being dominate.
