There are a couple details that should be mentioned with this for context. In the Battle Story, Zoid Cores were also for breeding. I'll skip details, but they eventually lost that ability because, using human technology with Zoidian influence, Zoid Cores started being artificially mass produced. I can't remember if the man-made cores lacked the ability to breed or not, but unfortunately it was a moot point regardless. Zoids needed bodies of water with heavy metal content for their offspring to construct bodies around themselves, and as Zi became more Earth like they no longer existed. Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, just spreading lore.
I always thought of zoids as more like coral than like fungus. I figured the zoid core is like a coral polyp, its the actual living part of the animal, rather than build up a mineral shell to live in the way a coral would the zoid core instead constructs a metallic mechanical body. Some would eat rocks to extract the trace ores from them, predatory zoids would instead eat other zoids as a more concentrated source of metal. I never decided if I thought they were eating uranium to power themselves or if they would drink water to extract deuterium for fusion power.
Do we ever get any additional references of reggel outside of Genesis? I mean, if Zoids are sentient and alive, it would make sense that they require a fuel source. Even the combat zoids versions too. But we never see anything about that in the other animes I don't think. Was that a gimmick for this season alone, or is that true to the entire canon?
I think that the Battle Story lore regarding the development of Combat Zoids is one of the most interesting aspects, and I think that it's a shame an anime series hasn't explored it in a way similar to Gundam: Origin. I've always thought it would be interesting to see the Wild Zoids transitioned into combat Zoids, and I imagine that for every type of war vehicle conceived, that the Zoidians had an equivalent. Including large ocean-going warships. If human history is any indication, I'm sure that the early experiments of implanting controls, and then placing the cores in artificial bodies were nothing short of horrific. Media seems to imply that the Zoid cores themselves are actually pretty hardy, and apparently can survive the body being eaten by a predator, so maybe most of them survived the experiments? Still, I'm sure that they can experience pain, and pass out/die of shock like most known complex life forms. There is also the possibility that some Zoidians tribes actually tried to build non-Zoid combat vehicles, finding the Frankenstein experiments to harvest the cores and place them into an artificial body to be unethical (but like the later Blox, found them to be less effective than combat Zoids). Nothing like a hot war to make someone reconsider just how important their ethic practices truly are.
watching this video i just remembered having a blox zoid that looked like some kind of weird insect creature that my brother bought in a brocante. I don't have it anymore sadly.
I only watched Zoids as a kid, was never really big into them. Was more of a Transformers kid. So I never knew much outside of the tiny bits I remember from the Century animes. I always assumed they were mass produced mechs from factories, had no idea there were Zoids that actual were animals. Learn something new everyday.

This is a goldmine video for helping me catch up on lore I didn't know about. Based on how natural wild zoids are born and develop over time, would it be reasonable to compare them to a transformer? I might be overly forcing the comparison, but at least as shown in the Michael Bay versions, the Transformers themselves are organically developed so it just feels somewhat similar.

And after googling, no, not Bio Zoids. The ones I'm talking about are way older than the various anime. Checking further, they're the line from the early 1980s, including Elephantus, Garius, Glidoler, and others. Edit: Checking further, the lore seems to be called 'Battle Story' in that era.
Correct. Saber Lion doesn’t have one. It’s too small. It was designed for urban guerrilla warfare. So it’s tiny but it fits into small confined spaces like alleyways and between buildings that larger zoids wouldn’t be able to navigate
Really, there's only 2 types of zoids. There's the wildzoids, and then there was the man-made ones, so it's the man mind's always with the ones. Most people know from the shows while Lore were energized later on to make them more animalistic. And the wild Zoids were really only introduced because people loved Leger zero, which was a sentient zoid.
Not quite right. Wild zoids and the lore behind combat zoids existed long before the introduction of the liger zero in the original lore and later in the 2nd of 7 animes. All zoids are sentient (blox zoids have ai of some sort so I’d count that)

Since they don't have cockpits maybe they are still the closest to the first wild Zoids. I'm willing to bet they have organs since Zoids like the Death Rex can eat other Zoids for nourishment.
