  • We react to Ananta Shesha - The Snake Bed of Lord Vishnu from the UA-cam Channel THE HINDU SAGA. Ananta Shesha, also known simply as Shesha or Adishesha, is a prominent figure in Hindu history. He is depicted as a thousand-headed serpent and is considered to be the king of all Nagas (serpents). In Hindu cosmology, it is believed that Ananta Shesha is the foundation upon which the universe rests. He is said to be an eternal being and represents the infinite conscious energy that permeates all creation.
Ananta Shesha is often portrayed as a couch or mattress for Lord Vishnu, the preserver of the universe, who lies on him during the cosmic sleep between creation cycles.
The name "Ananta" itself means endless or limitless, symbolizing the serpent's timeless existence. He is depicted with numerous heads, usually depicted as either five, seven, or a thousand, representing his infinite knowledge. In his hands, he holds different objects that symbolize his various attributes, such as a sword representing righteousness or a lotus representing divine beauty.
Ananta Shesha is believed to possess immense strength and power. In some mythological stories, he is described as the holder of the entire Earth on his hood while supporting the entire universe on his coil. He is also considered the guardian and protector of sacred texts and knowledge.
Ananta Shesha is highly revered in Hinduism and is worshipped along with Lord Vishnu and other deities. Devotees believe that seeking his blessings can bring them strength, knowledge, and protection. His symbolism highlights the idea of the eternal and infinite nature of the universe, reminding believers of the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution.

This reminds me a verse by the great Tamil poetess Avaiyar who gave the reply to the question asked by subrahmanya .the question is "which is the biggest?"or what do you consider as the biggest? For which Avaiyar replied:- the Earth is big.but it rests on the hood of sesha.and sesha is Parvathi 's little Toe ring.Parvathi is a part of Siva.Siva is in the heart of a true Baktha(devotee). So the greatness of a true Baktha is the biggest (or not measurable)!!!!!!

Aadisesha's father was Rishi Kashyap which was mentioned in Mahabharata.
Lakshmana and Balarama r the avatar or incarnation or Aadisesha.
The younger brother of Aadisesha is Vasuki, who is in Shiva's neck.
They both left their home to serve their lord Vishnu and Shiva.
Ananta Sesha literally means The Infinite One,
    And on him resides Vishnu.
So at the end of every universe, what remains r Aadisesha and Vishnu.
And the next creation begins by uncoiling of Sesha.

The coil of infinity is depicted as Shesha Nag, on which the vishnu (the space aspect of consciousness) resides. The universe is moving in circular motion, as is time. It appears to be a symbolic representation of the universe. Sheshnaga also has his own race, the Nag race, like the human race. All entities of the celestial being, including Devata and Shesah, can also resume different forms. As one formless consciousness can take different forms as gods and incarnations, and energy manifests as mother nature,

According to our branch Balarama is the 8th Avatar of Vishnu and 9th Avatar is Krishna
We see him as a form of both Vishnu as well as Balarama
Some say Adishesha is an extension of Vishnu some say both Vishnu and Shesha manifested into Balarama
This is the official version in Vaishnavism of Tamil Nadu
So in our dasavatar Buddha doesn't come
7th is Shri Rama 8th is Shri Balarama 9th Shri Krishna out of which Krishna is seen as "paripurna avataram" meaning the Avatar shows exposed Vishnu's might in its profound form

Adishesha is one of the primordial beings. He is just another pure manifestation of the divine who plays an important role in the material realm. Like Shankara is the material form of Param Shivay, all the divine beings who accompany the “complete” incarnation (or “Purna avatar” in Hindi and Sanskrit) in the material realm are manifestations of Adishesha.
Purna Avatar means complete manifestation. There can be divine souls like Ramakrishna, Ramana Maharshi etc. who are highly exalted. There can be partial manifestations like Neem Karoli Baba (who has the divine energy of Hanuman). Purna Avatars are no different from the divine form of the lord eg. Rama and Krishna. They are fully conscious but work within the material realm to fulfill a divine purpose. It is believed that whenever the divine incarnates in Purna Avatar, Adishesha always accompanies him/her.
Apart from this Adishesha can also incarnate even without the Purna avatar to fulfill some purpose. Therefore there are many stories of the incarnations of Adi Shesha in the Puranas.
Also the significance of Shesha balancing the world is a subtle message that the divine is continually supporting all material creations.

According to some schools of Vaishnavism
Lord Ananta, Ananta sesha is an expansion of Vishnu himself but in a Daasa, servile incarnation of Vishnu ( He's servile to Vishnu alone )
He is all powerful but usually allows the original person, Vishnu to take direct action instead of using his almighty power
This means he's constitutionally above even Lord Brahma
Equal to But subordinate to Vishnu
In his Vishnu form, he's called Sankarshana
One of the 1000 names of Lord Vishnu

So, Anant sesha is derived from two words Anant which mean Infinite and Shesha which means Remainder. After resolution of creation by Shiva not everything is destroyed. There is a part of the universe that remains infinitely and that part is known as Anant Shesha on which Vishnu as supreme conscious rests. To explain it in a story form Parbrahm in the beginning is formless, genderless, motionless, and virtueless. Then it divides itself into two parts that are Purush and Prakriti. Now to clear your doubts purursh and Prakriti are not material matter and energy which we see every day neither male nor female.
Purush is a static, supportive and still form of parbrahm that forms support of the creation and Prakriti is a dynamic, changing, and cohesive form of parbrahm that brings purush together or changes its states from static to dynamic.
Now, this Purush form further divides into three forms of Brahma, Vishnu and Shiv. and Prakriti divides itself into three forms to that is of Saraswati, Lakshmi and Shiva or Kali. It is here that purush and Prakriti take more limited forms like having genders, having a visible form and having different virtues.
But still, Vishnu and Shiv are both in static phase, Vishnu is resting in deep meditation and Shiv has not yet materialised.
In this course Adishakti or Prakriti incites Vishnu to release Brahma, now Brahma is resting inside Vishnu because Brahma's work is of creation, which means he has a very limited role after which his duties end. After creation, brahma resides with the support of Vishnu who is a preserver and nourisher.
Here, we see a lot of symbolism going on. We can say that all these forms and gods are nothing but parbrahm taking different roles and to better explain these forms were given different qualities and names.
A blooming of lotus from Vishnu's navel and Brahma sitting on it is probably taken from a child who is connected to his mother via placenta when he comes to this world. Brahma sees around and begins creation similar to how when an infant comes out of the womb into the outer world it's brain starts to build its conscious. his world.
Later, Prakriti comes to Brahma as Saraswati since he needs knowledge, arts, and skills to create, Lakshmi comes to Vishnu since he needs resources to maintain the world and Kali comes to Shiv since he needs raw power to destroy everything. At this point Brahma also asks for Kali's help and she has to separate from Shiv for the time being. Later , Kali will take birth as Sati and Parvati to get back together with Shiv.
The addition of anant Shesha as Vishnu's bed probably represents that after Shiva destroys everything there is still a part of creation that remains on which Vishnu the preserver rests. Brahma is pulled back inside and Prakriti has vanished along with its there forms and Shiva also again dissolves from physical body to pure consciousness along with Vishnu. But this process is not repetitive. The destruction of the universe after every age is different from this process. There Vishnu and Shiv do not dissolve themselves but play creation and destruction again and again with a multiverse.
Of course, like many others, we can take it literally as described or we can take it symbolically as different forces in action that our ancient sages gave names and forms for better understanding of common masses.
    It is your choice.

You c Balram was the incarnation of Sesh Naag ...( in the Previous avatar as Lakshman , younger brother to Ram Sesh naag had expressed the desire to be born as elder brother to Vishnu and so he was born as Balram the elder brother of Kriahna in the next avatar .....and although he is shown to be very powerful physically , very impulsive and hot headed ( both Lakshman and Balram loose their temper very quickly because both are Avatar of Snake who are said to have very bad temper ) also it is shown that Balram is motivated more by his brawn than by this brain , also he is depicted as a person who can be won over by words to flattery , gifts , and fake show of respect and for that reason Duryodhan was able to make a little space for himself in the heart of Balram and although Balram has slain many evil demons and defeated many evil kings with Krishna..... in the battle of Mahabharat however he is shown as an escapist , since both Pandavas and Kauravas are related to him and dear to him ( and although Balram knows that Duryodhan is wrong and unrighteous, in his heart he has a soft corner for Duryodhan who was his favourite disciple in the art of gada fighting ) it is very difficult for him to choose sides so he adopts an escapist policy and on the pretext of going on pilgrimage to far off places , he avoids taking part in the battle of Mahabharat. And he appears only at the end of the battle of Mahabharat when the Kaurava army is all defeated and last fight / duel between Bheem and Duryodhan in gada fight is about to take place .... everyone is happy to see that Balram has returned from pilgrimage to be witness to the fight between two his most famous disciples whom he trained in the art of gada fighting .....although Bheem is physically the more powerful of the two , Duryodhan was the more skilled and agile fighter of the two... and so Bheem had to put down Duryodhan with help of a foul move at the signal of Krishna ....this enraged Balram who was deeply hurt to see see his favourite pupil lying in a pool of blood because of a foul / deceitful move made by Bheem and Balram rushed to the ground and would have killed Bheem Sen had Krishna and all the other people not intervened to stop him....Krishna also rebuked Balram for adopting an escapist policy and not participating in the Mahabharat battle and returning in the end of the battle and trying to change the outcome .....he also rebuked Balram that if he was so concerned about the right move and wrong move why did he not correct Duryodhan when he tried to disrobe Draupadi and when he refused to give back to the Pandavas their rightful share in the kingdom ....Balram never participated in the Battle of Mahabharat, it is just an assumption that he supported Arjun and Krishna in invisible form by making firm the earth under wheels of their chariot.
