Looking back at this video 11 years later, you can see the majesty of this storm. Sandy was 1,150 miles wide, and became the second biggest hurricane in diameter in the Atlantic. The first is Typhoon Tip, which ranged around 1,380 miles wide. I remember Hurricane Sandy. I was 7 years old when it happened. The house was dark, my parents were scrambling around the house with flashlights in hand, and I distinctly remember them talking about our generator. Meanwhile, my sister and I sat on this black half-couch, and we were playing Angry Birds on the iPad 😂 I remember the lightning, rain, and wind.
I live in the Breezy Point section or Queens, about four blocks from the fire. I stayed in Breezy doing the storm. I'll never forget seeing the firefighters going down the flooded street toward the fire - 2 firefighters walking in front of the engine to ensure the road was still actually there. It was one of the most heroic things I've witnessed in my life. There aren't many signs of the storm damage left, and Breezy is doing well these days.
I live in Far Rockaway (Bayswater to be exact). Its the most north east part of the pennisula. My townhouse is the middle one on the block and its just about the highest one as im at the crest of the street. I got not a drop of water in my house or garage. The bay water and debris field stopped literally about 5" from my garage door not a drop entered. The lowest laying houses got anywhere from 2-4 feet of water in the basements but none of the homes here were substantially damaged thanks GOD. They did an amazing job on the new board walk and made many new parks and beautiful attractions here. Very peaceful place to live
Remer living through Sandy in Pennsylvania and hearing about what was going on in NYC. So glad the folks and I weren't there at the time. Mom's originally from the Chelsea District, and was freaking out a bit seeing the coverage.
I live in the Arverne section of the Rockaways back then in Queens,NY. I left the day before Sandy to Ozone Park on the higher side of Queens. I had a gut feeling that something big was coming. 😢🙏 I thank God I got out right in time.
I was at my moms in Sheepshead, I remember watching the water come over the belt!!! And outside all you saw was transformers blowing up. It looked like lightening outside. The water was up to my knees!! It was insane!!
I live on the North Sea coast in Northern Germany and since this coast line incl. the coastline of The Netherlands is subjected to regular storm surges of 9 to 12 feet we cannot afford to live directly by the sea but behind 27 feet high levees...I know that the coastlines may not be comparable, but still I don't understand why apparently no levees exist on the east coast.... We had a very deadly storm in 1962 which left over 300 people dead - but mostly in Hamburg and due to the fact that they are 80 miles inland and never saw it coming...after that the levees on the North Sea coast line were massively enforced and kept being enforced until today. And I don't understand that electricity is still provided via landlines - you hardly see those here in Germany - they were put underground decades ago...
I was out deilvering mail the next day i nthe sfter desetruction every house and car was hit by falling trees and debris, some sidewalks was destroyed, and a lot of trees blocking every pathway to walk,

A decade of learning while others took it easy.
I went to Ethiopia that December and I sometimes wonder if I left and exited the country through an airport further north rather than Washington D.C
