- "Mohan (Dilip Kumar) and Manju (Nargis), friends since childhood, love each other and want to marry each other. Mohan decides to go into town to buy jewelry for the marriage. On the way he is robbed and becomes unconscious with his injuries landing him in a hospital. Village panchayat asks Manju to marry on her fixed marriage date. A 70-year old groom is found for Manju, He asks her to care for his children and soon passes away. One night in stormy weather, she goes out to meet Mohan, and is killed when she falls off a cliff. Villagers arrive to convict Mohan of murdering Manju. Mohan says nothing in his defense and is sentenced to twenty years imprisonment. On release from jail, Mohan goes to the same place where Manju had died. He sees her spirit, who beckons him to follow her. As he does, he falls off the cliff edge and dies.

In 1948 I was 8 year old boy in AP and I vaguely remember India's Independence day. Now I am 82 year old man and live in the USA since 1969 after completing MTech. I could see this movie now, It is heart rending tragedy of two lovers. Performances of Nargis Didi and Dilip Kumar were outstanding. Enumclaw, WA, USA.

७२ वर्ष बाद भी सरल सहजता वाला गीत संगीत। नरगिस, नूरजहां, दिलीप साहब को देखना अच्छा लगता है। बेमेल विवाह और भारतीय नारी की उच्चता।

What a movie....wow. Story of pure..unadulterated love. Nargis was fantastic...but it was Dilip Sahab who was incredibly real. I have seen the part umpteen times when he realises his missing pitari and says like a man possessed "meri duniya kho gayi" and comes searching for his pitari and finds the broken doll in it....what follows is the most moving scene ever....his eyes...his expression....his dialogue...were out of this world. It will never be replicated. Thanku Dilip Sahab for such memorable performances.

This was a man possessed. The entire scene moves you to the core. Only Dilip Kumar in Devdas in the end after coming out of the station and till his death had the same affect on me. Salute to the biggest Star of all time.

Mukesh was playback voice of the Hero & Mohammad Rafi sang only one song and that was shot on some unknown supporting artist. Rafi was perhaps not more than 24 years old & not more than 4 years in the industry. But even then one can make out the extraordinary brilliance of his singing genius. 73 years have passed. This song is still alive & still equally listenable.
