There’s one shot in ROTS when Dooku kicks Obi-Wan to the ground and you see the shadow of Obi-Wan’s lightsaber. I’m guessing they forgot to remove that from the final cut of the movie because lightsabers shouldn’t have shadows, since they are made of light.

Fun fact, during the Anakin-Dooku duel at the end of AOTC, when the power cord that was connected to the lights is cut, the lightsabers do actually have colour fall off, which seems to imply it was meant to be only noticable under extremely dark conditions.

    • @vizman8585

It was explicitly said in the original Star Wars novelization that lightsabers did NOT give off any light to the surrounding surfaces. He found it curious that it glowed, but did not illuminate the surroundings" or something close to that.

I just wanted to add, that Yoda, being a CGI character has the blades cast their light on him, but not on the real actors (See the Dooku vs Yoda fight in Ep2 for example).
Another clear example is Kenobi vs General Grievous, when grievous ignites the sabers one by one they add their light to hes metal (especially the blue tones, and the following scene where he advances while spinning the blades is a clear example of them casting light on him) but when Kenobi takes hes battle stance, no light is cast on hes face.

I feel like the reason Lucas didn't do this is less of lack of ability do as much as it is a creative choice. There's a subtle glow on Yoda's face whenever he has his lightsaber out but it's just that, subtle.
This helps the films keep consistent and you don't see lightsabers glow in one film and the next the rules have changed, it's a small thing but it helps them feel consistent, this especially helps for watching in their intended order (chronological).
If you pay close attention you'll notice that during the Obi-Wan vs Grievous duel, they've done exactly what you have and added a glow to Obi-Wan and Grievous' face because of the sheer amount of lightsabers (normally you only see a reflection in their eyes like when Luke uses one in Obi-Wan's shack but with four it becomes more apparent).

1:00 It's funny to cut to this shot in particular when talking about the lack of colour fall off in the prequels because this is one of the rare times it actually does occur, you can see the green light of his saber on the side of Qui-Gon's face

Iirc, the sequel lightsaber props had LEDs in their blades, not unlike Force FX sabers you can buy. They still rotoscoped the traditional blade in post, but the practical effect caused by the LED blade is what gave off that nice-looking color falloff.

Hmm maybe make it look less noticeable during brightly lit scenes.
Like others have said, this starts to look messy which I think is because the color is still really sharp while the scene is well lit. This is probably why this isn't done during the movies.
The Prequels made sure to lit up a dark room with the lightsaber (ex: AotC Dooku Fight) since it's one of the few sources of light in the scene which looks amazing.
During a daytime battle though, the colors would probably get distracting & blurred when overlapping, which makes sense but visually could look worse than the original. A more subtle effect though could look good while still improving on the original.

Inthe book The Art of Star Wars The Force Awakens, it is explained that there was a huge debate before making Episode 7 between the art director and JJ. They did not know if lightsabers should spill light around them. The art director argued that no spill makes the lightsaber more magical and other worldly. I have to agree with him. The spill gives the lightsaber too much of a realistic toy feeling. It reminds you too much that they are plastic glowing tubes. This wasn't the case in the OT and The Prequels. The lightsabers felt pretty magical. Rewatch the scene on Dagobah when Luke fights Vader in the cave and you'll understand what I mean.

The other thing you forgot about the sequel sabers is they fade as the saber swings, like a real light would. With motion blur, some of the color should come back into the blade itself as it becomes slightly transparent from the blurring. They do this mostly (at least for close up shots) using a 3D blade to simulate how it would actually react. I wish Andrew Kramer would come up with a sequel to Saber that incorporates fading into it's motion blur calculation.

Idk I've always liked the clean look of the lightsabers. There was one scene in AOTC where Anakin and Dooku dueled where it was dark enough to emit the lightsabers light but other than that the lightsabers always looked like the light is contained within the saber, making it kind of other worldy. Now they just kind of look like really bright glow sticks lol you can say it makes it more realistic but the point is that lightsabers aren't real. There are times where the extra light is cool but making it super bright every time really create a disconnect from the the previous movies continuity and over exposes the scene to the point of ridiculousness sometimes.

I think in the prequel case, the whole lighthing works around the characters would have to be altered too, since the sabers stand out too much imo, but it is still a great improvement ;D

Can you do this for the fight we see in Return of the Jedi? I've always wondered what that fight would look if the lightsabers looked like they do in the prequals with the type of lighting we see in the sequels.

Awesome! You clearly know a lot about this character - And that's refreshing, but unfortunately rare to see! That's exactly why we're making this. We LOVE his story, and this is indeed a biopic - We will see his childhood, his 'challenges' with his family, his lineage, issues of nature vs. nature, and evil as a conduit of power for Sith of both race and creed. Please keep your eyes peeled for our deep dive video coming as soon as we can possibly have it of a sufficient quality!

@@YusiDJordan Oh wowowowow!!! Deep dive videos are my favourite! Yes to all of that! Nature VS nurture specifically, I'm really into discussing that. I'm more hyped for this than I was for Shards of the Past, this is gonna be awesome! I wish I could help pay for it, but I'm a teenager with strict parents :((
And you have a point, Sidious' past was explored in the Plagueis novel, but Vitiate never got a proper past. I'm glad you're telling this story. And with your editing skills, it's gonna look awesome!

I do not think so. They're lightsabers, not flashlights. The light they throw is tacky and when they go too intense (Kenobi) it makes the characters monochromatic. And if they always use it, that element is lost as a resource, as for example in AoTC, when during Anakin and Dooku's duel, their faces are illuminated by their sabers, two Jedis who ended up on the dark side, struggling between the Jedi blue and the Sith red. Or scenes like this...ua-cam.com/video/cT0H5qg8FTc/v-deo.html

  • @rockingamingwiththesahit2145

Maybe the design of the lightsabers improved over time in Star Wars. Originally, the plasma beams were less powerful, therefore covering less area, but in between the OT and TFA, the quality of lightsabers improved. They might have become hotter, thus now emitting light around them.

First, please do not take this as me saying your work is bad. The work you did in this video is excellent. Having said that, the light fallout or glow from the sequel movies and even the obi wan show is something I really don't know how I feel about. In some instances it can look really great, but overall it really just make everyone look like they just lit their glow sticks and are ready for the rave to start... it's just... almost a little silly looking to me. Like it just looks like a disco rave or kids neon sign or something. If that makes any sense.

You bring up fantastic points on the lightsabers in the prequels and that is something the sequels do better. But there is one thing the prequels do better than both the sequels and even the original trilogy: choreography. The lightsaber duels feel more alive and beautifully done. The original feels more robotic and basic while the sequels look like two kids playing sword fights trying to attack the other but too afraid to get hurt themselves. Granted, Episodes IV-IX don’t have much Jedi Masters or Sith Lords, only young novices, old men and a cripple on stilts, while the prequels have a plethora of young men in their prime and old men who haven’t declined in their powers just yet. But there definitely should have been better choreography in those movies. So when it comes to lightsaber fights, I’ll take breathtaking action sequences over two kids playing Jedi or old men trying to capture the spirit of their youth.
