The rushed march from Stamford Bridge, to the south coast must have been devastating. Considering the health and diet standards of the time, past injuries and soldiering illnesses Harold's army must have been in a sorry state. Add to that they'd just fought a pitched battle; you have to question the wisdom of Harold choosing to engage the Normans so quickly after arriving. I've some vivid memories of marching in full kit and pack from my Army days. Just doing one day of it took a helluva toll... But 16? Gnawing raw bacon and moldy bread. Scooping handfuls of puddle water. Over medieval roads in coarse boots or barefoot. It's astonishing they were able to fight at all let alone doing it for hours on end at Hastings. 😮

The chronicle of Battle Abbey states that the fallen standard of Harold was marked not the place where he died. Why can’t everybody read the whole page of details the monks give?

The introduction is very misleading. He makes it sound as if there had been a stable, homogenous population that saw the invasion of different peoples into the British isles. Plus, the idea of being English is a relatively modern concept.

Maybe you should try watching the programmes before jumping to Wrong conclusions. At no point does he talk about one population. He talks about ANCESTORS Maybe you should look up the differences. And England had been around for quite a while by 1066. Note we had Kings of England? Not kings of Wessex or Mercia, but England. Had done since at least Athelstan in 927. It could be argued that England has Never had a homogenous population, so why would someone suggest it? Most of us who don't have the attention span of a gnat understand Exactly what is being said.
