Thanks Gus. As a musician I really appreciate the simple "custom" set up you laid out here, so we can share the particulars of guitar work, quickly, with fellow musicians, using the onboard mic, customized for that sound. Again, thanks!
Just bought the camera and when I plug in the RODE VideomicGO it doesn’t recognize it and I don’t get any sound. Any ideas of what is going wrong? Thanks for your help!
Hello Gus, I’ve just purchased the XA11, however one feature my old 2008 model Sony (that I thought I’d miss) is a built in remote control feature. In fact, I knew I’d miss a remote- so I did considerable research and found a post where a person had used a Lanparte LANC wireless controller, (LANC-02) and claimed it worked well with the XA11. This is available on line for $59.00. I solved the problem of connecting the receiver to the camcorder buy fashioning a piece of plastic round just slightly larger than 15/16 diameter x 1 1/4 inches, and tapped a hole in the middle to hold the threaded piece that the receiver attaches to. Of course the receiver then plugs into the remote jack. Since I’m using the shoe to attach my RODE mic, the piece attaches nicely to the mic holder. Just wanted to make you aware of this feature in case you want to mention it in one of your videos. Thanks for all you do! Michael
Thanks for your video! I wonder if you could use a zoom recorder to record audio. I’ve used it in field recording before and it is effective. I guess you can just attach an xlr cable and carry the zoom around
Have been checking out your videos for the last last couple of days. I have been wanting the XA11 for a whole year now, and will be ordering it soon. I Really appreciate your informative videos and am looking forward to all of the great advice on this cameras settings etc. I have also decided on the Manfroto BeFree tripod for my XA11. It is great to have somone who has extensive knowledge of this camera to help us new owners . Thank you Gus!
Thanks for the video, thumbs up! Question please. What exact make and model is your XLR mic cable that is right angle on one end? Also what length is the XLR cable...18 inches? Is 12 inches too short? What about using a right angle to right angle XLR cable?
Hi Gus. Thank you for taking the time to make these films. You have been such a help since I bought my xa11. I jumped straight in at the deep end as it's my firs video camera. Please keep them coming..
Hello...is this a great camera to use for filming youtube? and is it simple to figure out? i have a sony a6000 i film on and it seems hard for me to set the settings
Hey Gus, I'm trying to connect a rode go light, 3.5mm input to my Xa11. I'm struggling finding the proper audio settings for it. Every other video about the go light, said its a simple plug in and you're ready to go. HELP!!
Yes, very frustrating trying to connect some mics to the Mic input of the XA 11, as I discovered. I also discovered that a) the mic switch on the handle must first be set to OFF before making a connection so that the camera switches from the internal mic to the mic input. But the biggest thing most people miss is that b) the mic connected to the Mic input must be a “commercially available condenser microphone with THEIR OWN POWER SUPPLY“ (page 76 in the manual). So just plugging in a Lavalier mic directly doesn’t work. B&H Photo does list the Rode Wireless Go system as being compatible though.....frank
Gus great job. Is there a recommended SD card size for this camcorder? I intend to do a lot of wildlife video, outdoors activity with some on camera stuff too for my own channel. Thank you!
Thanks for this video! We are using this camera for fb live church and have a remote mic, through our sound board, using an xlr cable. I can't seem to figure out how to turn off the internal mic. It picks up both the xlr mic and also the built in mic. Any suggestions?
Hey Gus, great videos on the XA11! Maybe you or anyone else might know. I just bought the XA11 and when I plug in the rode micro go into the 3.5mm jack I get no sound. Any idea? Mic is bad new out of the box?
We recently purchased a Canon XA11 and a Deity V-mic, 3.5mm. We're having trouble setting it up properly. This is our first time using such a camcorder. Please give us a little insight on what to do. Thanks
Hi Gus...I'd love to see if you can help me solve something. I'm a middle school film teacher who is lucky enough to have two of these cameras. However, whenever I try to hook up a rode mic with a 3.5 mm cable, the sound that is collected is full of static and barely audible. I have tried using a brand new (condensed and powered) Rode mic on both of them, and 3 years ago tried a different type of Rode mic with them. I am choosing mic in the functions, powering the mic on, and this should be simple. Any clue as to what I am doing wrong? The input switch is off. I posted to the Canon forum yesterday and they shared your video with me.
Hi Gus, I'm not getting any audio from the internal or the external mike. I just watched your video and all my adjustments are as you suggested.. HELP!! Thanks, Bob
To use the 3.5 mic jack does the microphone need to be powered ? I just picked up an XA11 and tried my Rode Video Micro and No audio ? Great Videos BTW .. I live just out side of Worcester as well so I enjoy your video content of the area.
Question! What to do if your 3.5 mm inline mic is not producing audio? Is this a setting issue? Thank you so much Gus for all your tips...Very helpful. I am not familiar w/ this camera, as I use a Sony but recently started engaging this camera and your tips are so appreciated -- YOUR THE BEST!
I have the same problem with a videomicgo so I bought a xlr adapter to 3.5mm mic from Amazon and this works great (when operating make sure you don't switch to 48v phantom). I have a feeling the voltage is incorrect at the 3.5mm jack or the rode has a different voltage threshold to operate.. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07HF6PY9V/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Hi. Thanks for all your videos. I have a problem with getting no audio when I plug my HDMI out to a TV on the Canon XA11. Can you provide me any insight? It captures audio, but when I do HDMI out either live video, or a recorded video, I get video only and no audio.
Thanks for this vid; very helpful. I have an XA11 and a RODE Pro mic. I do a lot of UA-cam vids indoors, recording myself speaking. Can you pls tell me exactly what settings are best to use on both the mic and the camera for this?
Hi Gus- Great video! Looking to get a video camera to record my daughter's bands she's in. The main question I have is if while recording, are the audio VU meters always active in the frame, so that I can adjust levels on the fly? I'm hoping that I can keep those meters available all of the time while recording- vs needing to go through a menu to bring them up temporarily. thanks again!
Hi mate, I have a Rode mic plugged in, yet, both the Rode and the in-built mic are recording audio. How do I turn the in-built mic off or does this not matter? Thanks.
Gus can you mount a mic with XLR and 2 las receivers through the line port to get two sources of sound on the Canon XA 11 ? I trying to set up an interview but want to cover all aspects of sound as much as possible?
Hi , My XA11 is not taking the audio signal from the Mic connected to the Microphone input slot (Red) on the right side. I am using a BOYA BY-MM1 on-camera microphone. Why is it so ? The Audio level indicator appears nil when i connect the external mic to the Side audio jack (RED). I contacted canon. They told me to select Audio input 2 to INT/MIC. But its not working. There are no video tutorials explaining how to do it. Please help if u know.
Hey Gus, I am connecting an audio source (music from a sound desk) via the mic input jack. By setting the input levels as recommended in the manual (-18db) the volume through my headphones is way too low to monitor. I have the headphones volume on max but when I adjust the input volume it also alters my headphone level. Hi Gus, Great XA11 video series you've produced. I'm thinking of purchasing the Rode Video mic pro and plan to shoot outdoors, primarily wildlife. What settings would you suggest for this? Is this a suitable low cost option?
I see you answered the question below--you said: r you can fill the other side by changing in camera setting to channel 1/2---where do I go to find that channel 1/2 setting?
This video was very interessting to me also. Great work and again, very clear and nice explained I think, who is interested to buy this Canon AX-11, it is a must to look your videos. Once more again: Thank you for excellent video's!
I just got this camera ....my issue is that when I go to brighten my videos there is this little black stripe that appears when I brighten up the video .....what is that stripe ...how do I get rid of it
I have this camera coming. My question is do you feel my zoom H4N Pro is pretty much unneeded with the XA11? Like just run the NT3 right into the XLR input on the camera and just use H4N as back up audio?
QLF Productions id say yes, but depends how many mics you are trying to capture, if you have more than 2 xlr mics, you will still need an external recorder.
Great video! is there some way on XA11 to disable the built-in MIC and use only the mic connected to the red "MIC in" input of the camera? I only have 1 microphone, and using the combination of internal+mic is giving me problems and noises that are coming from the environment, being recorded by the internal microphone.
Turn OFF the mic on/off switch in the Input 1 & 2 area, THEN plug a powered condenser mic into the Mic input. That switches the terminal to an external mic instead of the built in mic.
Hey Gus, have you ever tried the Rode VideoMic Go with the Canon XA-11? I’m having trouble with the settings needed to record quality audio with this combination.... any help would be appreciated
Hey Gus great videos! Thanks for taking the time to make these. QUESTION: I have the XA-20...what’s your opinion on the differences between the XA-11and the 20? Thanks 🙏
ross1ful thank you, glad you enjoy, there is not much of difference between the 2. The XA11 is lighter, supports remote operation and supports HDMI. The good thing about the XA20 is that it has wi-fi.
Gus DaCosta Thank you for your reply! My XA-20 has a remote and I pair my camera with an Atomos external recorder via the HDMI getting 422 10 bit pro res. I am currently trying to match the look to my canon C100 “trying “ but these XA cameras are AWESOME! love everything about them! Hey Gus, love your presentation on your videos, I subscribed to your channel and looking forward to see more! PS. If you would like to learn more about me and what I do I’m on IG, knippixproductions
Hello Gus, Thanks for the video great info. I just purchased my canon and still getting use to it. I have a question - When using 2 XLR mics (podcast/interview setting) when playing back, I notice input 1 sound only comes out of the right speaker and input 2 comes out of the left. What setting can I use to run input 1 and 2 together for mono stereo? Thank you
Yes, very frustrating trying to connect some mics to the Mic input of the XA 11, as I discovered. I also discovered that a) the mic switch on the handle must first be set to OFF before making a connection so that the camera switches from the internal mic to the mic input. Hello, I am trying to use an aux channel on my Presonus sound mixer to get a specific mix into my Canon XA11. However, I am only getting mono audio. How can I fix this to be stereo?
You will need 2 balanced XLR cables to connect the output of your mixer to the XA11. Set the 1 and 2 switches to LINE and Manual gain. I am doing the same.
Hi Gus, Thank you for the audio review. I'm still a bit stuck on my settings and wonder if you have any ideas. I have plugged in an external mic at Ch1 and when using std settings, it ended up as a mono audio coming from my left earphone only. When I switched it to speech setting, there is a loud noise that's being captured. I tested many different combination of functions and it seems I need to plug in 2 external mic with std setting in order for me to play sounds on both left and right earphones and limited noise from background. Any ideas what I can do with the settings?
Rhoda Choi you have a couple of options, you can either fill the other side of the audio in post (if you are using more than 1 mic) or you can fill the other side by changing in camera setting to channel 1/2. This way you record to both sides in camera (if you are using only one mic). What software do you use to edit?
Yes, for the 3.5 mm MIC input it must be a powered condenser mic with its own power supply (page 76 in the manual). Phantom power is available on XLR Inputs 1 and 2 though.
Hi What about using the Mic jack located next to the Headphone jack on the side of the camera? Perhaps for use with and i-Reg mic. I am struggling to get that working. Can you please make a video specific to that and the setting required. Best regards.

Hi I’m recording a conference from 35 feet away with an Aux Send from in house mixer and was wondering how would U set that audio signal to getting a stereo mix?
Gus DaCosta Ok if I have only the XA11 to work with how would you setup the camera 🎥 to record in L/R stereo? Would you split the mono signal into input 1 & 2 then switch input 2 setting to input 1? Or is there a better way? Thanks
Hi Gus Dacosta im also using canon xa11 l was recording a clients wedding, l left microphone off how can l recover sound as the video has no sound please help me. from Mesh

You will need 2 balanced XLR cables to connect the output of your mixer to the XA11. Set the 1 and 2 switches to LINE and Manual gain. I am doing the same.
Hi Gus,
Thank you for the audio review.
Does it need to be a powered microphone?
Yes, for the 3.5 mm MIC input it must be a powered condenser mic with its own power supply (page 76 in the manual). Phantom power is available on XLR Inputs 1 and 2 though.
Hi
What about using the Mic jack located next to the Headphone jack on the side of the camera?
Perhaps for use with and i-Reg mic.
I am struggling to get that working.
Can you please make a video specific to that and the setting required.
Best regards.
So just plugging in, for example, a Lavalier mic directly doesn’t work. B&H Photo does list the Rode Wireless Go system as being compatible though.
Can the camera operate an external mic in an XLR plug simultaneously with a 3mm mic plugged in?
Hi I’m recording a conference from 35 feet away with an Aux Send from in house mixer and was wondering how would U set that audio signal to getting a stereo mix?
Yannick Roy I use a zoom h4n pro with to plug right into the mixer, then sync audio in post. You will need either xlr or 1/4” cables to hook it up.
Gus DaCosta Ok if I have only the XA11 to work with how would you setup the camera 🎥 to record in L/R stereo? Would you split the mono signal into input 1 & 2 then switch input 2 setting to input 1?
Or is there a better way? Thanks
It's really helpfull 🎉 but I can't use my wireless microphone

How can I get a good depth of field with this camera for an interview I need to shoot?
roachb08 you have to set yourself a little further away from your subject and zoom in, make sure you have a good audio on the person you are interviewing.
