This is still some of the most profound songwriting/storytelling I’ve ever heard in my life
This is a god damn masterpeice and I can't bear to listen to it more than once a month.
I agree. I must be going through something though, bc I want to listen to this on repeat atm... autumn blues?
As soon as the snow sets in, I come back for a listen
Agreed. Insert Ron Burgundy gif
this feels like a sliver into some other dimension we're not meant to be seeing. literally everyone is right in the pocket. as close to perfect as anything i've ever seen.
"Right in the pocket" is such a cool and perfect way of describing this. Thank you!!
I know it’s a year later, but fuck, what a great summary of this video. 😂
One of the most haunting and moving musical performances I have ever watched..I've been coming back for years
This might be the most intricate murder ballad I've ever heard.
The band makes it so powerful alongside his lyrics
also gotta hand it to the audience for noticing the gravity of the performance and shutting up. i loathe loud crowds at venues and bars.
Errl Scout For this situation it definitely helps and it's much appreciated. However the opposite can be just as awful. It annoys me to be seeing a band with a lot of energy and the crowd is cross armed and motionless.
Black Sheep Young'n , i never even thought of it that way, but its just as true, i totally agree.
Black Sheep Young'n maybe listen to dire wolf live dead ⚡️💀⚡️
Andy was kind enough to come back out for an encore. I don't know if he picked my request because of how loud I screamed it or what. "Wendell Walker!!!!!" This song has brought me great comfort(not alone) and the kindness people have showed me has been wonderful. I love you all and you are my heroes. Don't give up.
Nice!! I went to his show and he kinda chuckled at the request from someone else. If it makes any sense, this goddamn song is amazing but I can't make it through without feeling very uncomfortable lol I dunno what I woulda done if he sung it live!
When I saw him last, he pretty much scoffed at the suggestion of playing it. Kinda like Radiohead with "Creep" for MANY years. But have hope. Radiohead now plays that song on tours :-)
I'm seeing Andy tomorrow night. We shall see!
HE SANG IT LIVE!!! I WENT TO A SHOW IN ATLANTA GA AND HE PLAYED IT!!!!!!!!! Absolutely STUNNING and the crowd was so quiet, you could probably hear me say OH SHIT when he starts strumming the opening chords!!
@@CronoXponoholy fuck, you love to hear that eh
@@GettingHyphy It's goddamn compelling live and it was EXTREMELY so when the crowd hushed like instantly. Fucking great!
he's such a great fucking storyteller, this song especially. leaves you hanging on after every word
Folks, this here is a MASTERCLASS in every sense of the word.
I watch this video over and over and I am 100% transfixed every. time. I swear this performance is a meditation.
the way they are all just standing so stoically while Andy begins. its almost melancholy, especially the viola or violin player, he has an intensity about him. the drummer is also completely in the fucking zone and i love it.
I know for a prolific story songwriter like Andy, "Wendell Walker" could become a little "Free bird"-ish but JESUS, what a track!!!!
The single most beautiful, haunting and sad song I’ve ever heard and undoubtedly ever will. A lyrical masterpiece accompanied by the most minimalist, delicate and yet powerful music .
Wendell Walker was a friend of mine
We'd stain our teeth in the summertime
And with lips of purple, the winter would roll
Past the boarded windows into our souls
And shake our weary bones
Now this past winter was the coldest in years
It's hard to explain if you've never lived here
But it locks your doors and starts your mind
Thinking in circles just to pass the time
And breaks your weary heart
Now Wendell Walker was a man of God
But he didn't care much for his sober mind
And when the cold mixed in he was turned around
Heard the voice of God and the angels sound
A message just for him:
[Refrain]
"My son, my son, she is the devil's child
Won't you save her while you can
Cut down the other man"
[Verse 2]
Now Wendell Walker was a friend of mine
But he married too young in the summertime
Their hearts weren't ripe so they fell apart
And I found myself with a joyful heart
As our secret lives began
We found our moments in between the hours
When Wendell Walker drove his car to town
But one day he found a letter that I wrote for her
On the top of her dresser and in his winter mind
He heard the voice of God say:
[Refrain]
"My son, my son, she is the devil's child
Won't you save her while you can
Cut down the other man"
[Verse 3]
With the voice of the lord ringing in his ears
And the note to his wife that confirmed his fears
He sat down on the edge of the bed
Read the letter again to see who'd sent it
But it was signed 'forever yours'
He stood up slow like he'd just been hit
Walked into the kitchen where his wife was sitting
He said, "my mother called on the telephone
She says she needs some help so I'll be back in the morning"
And he grabbed his heavy coat
My phone rang while I was watching the news
She said the house was ours to cure these winter blues
So I made my way, and we turned the blinds
And Wendell walked in just in time
To see our secret die and say:
[Outro]
"My son, my son I'm gonna have to cut you down"
He pointed his rifle to my eyes
But his hesitating hands
Were shaking from the cold
So I pushed his gun away
Just as he found his strength
And the bullet kissed her lips
And I cried:
"My god, my god what have I done?"
And he reloaded his gun
And he put it in his mouth
And I stood in the room that I'd created
Thanks
Man what a beautiful song and eerie too, the last part when is made me feel guilty for no reason hehe
Fernanda Verdesoto bb
A true Murder Ballad... Thanks!
Epic
Holy shit. this is so good.
Haunting. I think of the that Room That He Created -- inside a sod house, in the Prairie Provinces. Cheap wood paneling and peeling, blood-stained wallpaper. A bleak, flat winterscape outside, through tattered, yellowing lace curtains. All stuff in my mind: that's what his riff and his voice and his poetry created.
What you describe is what I see too. That desolation of rural, plains completely bleakened by winter, a low-hung sun lingering on the southern horizon, never really rises.
This is like listening to a crime novel in song form 👌
Thank you for the song , Andy. Posted it on my facebook.....
aren't u dead
Wtf ahahhaahah
Lmao.. Back from the dead ?
Its a zombie '! 😂
This just made my damn day.. hahah
Yo holy shit 😂😂
This song never goes where you think it will, and the reason it's awesome.
Such a masterpiece. Never fails to give me teary eyes and goosebumps. I'm grateful for artists like Andy. This is much more than a simple song. This is storytelling and songwriting at their best.
Saw him for the first time ever open up for Low a couple of months ago. It was just him and his acoustic and from the moment he walked out on stage I was riveted. Amazing storyteller with a cold, dark authority over his material. I'm all in at this point. Great artist! Thanks for posting this magical version.
That's amazing you saw him at that time solo, and opening up for such a great act as Low.
I saw him open for Low in Omaha on the same tour. He didn't play Wendell Walker. :(
I prefer this version over the Album!!
Too good.. Way too good. I am so glad there is stuff like this out there, cutting right to my soul.
How this doesn't have a million views is beyond me.
One of the greatest songs and stories ever! I've never had such a strong visual image of a song's lyrics before. I would love to see a music video of this one day.
I've loved this song for so long yet have never seen this. It's like hearing it for the first time again, such an amazingly told story and this is such a haunting version. I love it!
When I first experienced this during Andy's last European tour,I was transfixed.Never heard anything like it.Groundbreakinng new genre - Prairie Goth ? Dark Country ? Don't need a label ;it's compulsive listening .Love it .
+Francis Hatfield Try David Eugene Edward's bands (16 Horsepower and Wovenhand), he's a lot more gothic - and country too, for that matter. Not to take away from Andy here - this song and performance is simply stunning.
PRAIRIE GOTH! I'M DYING!
I talked to Andy outside of a show, and instead of asking him if he's ever rewatched this because it's an absolute masterpiece of a performance, i asked if he has a dog. He doesn't. (Didn't?)
crystal clear, i can hear every sound they pour into this. smooth
Amazing, I love discovering new songs that make me obsess about them for a while. You've put yourself up there with Bob Dylan and Nick Cave with this effort.
Many Thanks!
Check out Chris Staples. Highly recommend his album, "American Soft."
He is a superb song writer and story teller. Loads of feeling and character in his voice and this ballad is hauntingly beautiful.
Holy sweet goodness... this is the most magical capture of this song yet. Thank you. Thank you so much.

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. This guy definetly deserves a bigger audience.
Holy shit. This is such a haunting version. Amazing. Just got tickets for London gig. I hope he plays this one
He did and it was the tits. He's a gem. Amazing.
I can't remember the last time a song made me cry
+Cresita every time i hear this guy makes me cry
well now you can
Funny you would say that since this song also just made me cry and I had to ask myself that same question.
There are two other songs that achieved that for me before as far as I remember:
Neutral Milk Hotels "Comely" and "Instant Disassembly" by Parquet Courts.
Fernando (at this moment it is four years after your post and how the fuck are you right now) here it Is, the end of the year of hell we ALL will not ever want to remember but sure as fucking hell want to forget ... been watching dumb videos me animated song cartoon shit, then this. And it was the wrongs or rights don't click thy and hit, I almost god damn lost it. As I write I am somewhere near that gin
Amazing. Shauf is a treasure.
This song is stuck in my head and in my heart forever
.... Just happened to leave UA-cam to grab dinner and walked in to find this playing after listening to Savoy Motel ( CHECK THEM OUT!!)....... And, .... HOLY SHIT!!! Andy Shauf.... PLEASE COME TO NEW ORLEANS!!!!! Simply breathtaking.... Kudos, sir .... Kudos.........
Amazing performance, and nice job on the audio as well. I would much rather listen to this instead of a studio version. And the lyrics are perfect and compelling.
A masterpiece , nothing less, instruments together playing just perfectly, such a perfect sound, those lyrics and that emotion felt like we where living it.
The lyricism in this song paints such vivid mental imagery every time I listen to it. What a beautifully tragic story.
Cant stop listening to this
One of the most beautiful songs of all time.
Oh my oh my, this is downright fantastic! Well done everyone
He is amazing. One of the best story tellers I've ever had the pleasure of listening too. Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Bono, and others.
this song is so good even before the outro hits, then they drop that outro and it's like...damnnnn
that violin.. lovely
BRILLIANT, breathtaking song! Andy is a real genius!✨🎶✨
I don't think a single person in that dared to breathe.
This song makes me cry every time. It's a beautiful performance. Thank You.
The sound is amazing, the song a masterpiece, the performance simply moving.
The winter, the affair, the catastrophe, the guilt... The Saskatchewan...
Haunting and perfect, and makes me think of Sinclair Ross.
Man, I love this guy.
I love the intention and purpose in his eyes as he plays
Back again for more, 3 years on.lol
Wow .that so very strong and well delivered I was mesmerized transfixed.
I listen to this every now and again to remind me of how hauntingly brilliant this song is, it literally takes me to another dimension.

UA-cam I can't believe you put an ad in the middle of this song! You have no soul!
What an great, intimate look at a beautiful song. Thank you

This is one of my favorite songs, but I think that my friends wouldn't understand because it seems a "boring" song.
