PRO TIP - any time you make changes to authentication settings on a system - ssh, pam, sudoers, and so on - open a second root terminal to that system and leave it open until AFTER you verify your changes worked correctly, so you don't get locked out of your system.

Luke it appears you've got yourself confused between SSH keys and GPG keys. The keypair used to log into your server and copied to your server with ssh-copy-id is an SSH keypair. Your GPG key can be used to encrypt files on your computer or for email (or for many other things). But they aren't used for SSH. The command people should run before ssh-copy-id is ssh-keygen -t ed25519 OR ssh-keygen -t rsa -b 4096 (never use dsa or ecdsa, dsa is insecure and ecdsa is standardised by the NSA and probably insecure)

I use gpg keys for ssh authentication. It's not what luke was doing, it's way more complicated to set up, but it's cute, so I use it.
Thanks, I was trying to follow this as a layman and I got stuck on this part. Luke has good ideas but I prefer tutorials that are on fresh installs for this reason.

Thanks for the walkthrough and that amazing script luke....went through the whole process like a breeze.....i spent a few nights figuring out how to set it up, but your script is a gem....Thanks again!!
Just an hint (because I encountered this issue): debian could have ufw (firewall) enabled by default. To allow connections for http and https to your server you can run the 2 following commands:
ufw allow 80
ufw allow 443
Otherwise you won't be able to connect to your website. Same goes for the mail settings
ufw allow 993
ufw allow 587
thank you very much
Thank you!
had the same problem, drove my crazy until I figured it out. why is it even enabled, shouldn't it be off by default?
hell yes, thank you
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
Luke. Thanks very much man. Thanks to you I was able to set up my website with your clear instructions (I used your referral links so hopefully that's an appropriate thank you). I also checked out your website and your recommendation for language learning particularly German and the course by Michel is great. I listened to the introductory section and was able to string together basic sentences which months of duolingo have been unable to teach me. Also, you were instrumental in getting me into vim and a lot of the stuff in linux. So please keep up the content in linux, as much as you may be getting tired of it.
I have a static website hosted via GitHub, but after seeing your video about making a web server and email server, and now I've been planing to in the near future making my own web server/website and email server. Thanks for the amazing content and tutorials! :)
Incredible tutorial. I couldn't find anywhere else where actually worked and was so well explained 👍
Tested on VirtualBox via Ubuntu 20.04 and it works great!
I spent a ton of time 5 years ago setting up a LAMP / Email server via AWS and paying $100/month for this cloud machine. Now I built my own home server to do the same thing. Really appreciate you putting this together. I will be donating to your cause.
A bonus is that I can now host multiple websites from my home server. I previously thought I needed a hardware reverse proxy, but nope you just game me the solution!
Was in the middle of setting up a website and email server when this video got uploaded, sick timing. Many thanks Luke 🙏
It's important to know (idk if Luke said it or not). That Vultr and almost every VPS blocking port 25, so you can't send emails, but still can receive it.
To open port 25 in Vultr you need to open support ticket, describe for what purposes do you need opened 25 port and then you need to wait at least 30 days, then you will get your 25 port.
Please note that!
They opened it for me within a couple of days once I opened a support ticket. Maybe you were just unlucky, lol
@@bigfly1391 Wow. Well they ask for 30-day working instance. I was creating just new and open ticket so they told me to w8 for 30 days.
uh
@@keibi._. well, but how then it works: www.vultr.com/docs/what-ports-are-blocked
Yeah you'll have to do this for a lot of hosting services. I did this for AWS so I could run my server on EC2. Until they approved it I forwarded outgoing mail thru dnsexit and configured my DNS records and postfix config appropriately
Every couple of years I need to setup a new server for a new project, and every time I go back to this video, because Luke always does everything right.
I wish I could thank you in person, but I will always be able to send monero.
Whos this
Thank you for correcting the certbot error on camera. I was stuck on that same error
This is my favorite channel! Keep up the great work!
As soon as I clicked to watch this video I got a 2 hour advertisement of someone who was going to teach me how to setup a website using wordpress.
However, I skipped that to watch Luke.
Great video the most concise easy to follow tutorial I’ve seen . Definitely giving you’re mail program a try thanks 🙏

i'm commenting as i'm watchimg but it's a very interesting thing that it feels like he's not as confident in himself, and less trustworthy even though he's probably behaving the same way he's always been. a beard really does wonders for men.
Great video, Luke. I would also recommend creating a user other than root, and then ssh-copy-id into it. Just as a best practice to keep root access behind another wall of authentication
thats pretty awesome. gives you a good starting point for setting up your own server.
Your tutorial made this way too easy to get off my ass and finally get my own server. Thanks for the kick in the arse Luke!
Hi Luke I love your videos! They always are straightforward & easy to follow. I always use them as a reference when I forget something so thank you! :) Also I wanted to ask if you could make a video on Conky or another widget program for Arch. Thank you again for all the great linux videos & remember to stay awesome!
For anyone, who is also using Vultr's Hosting: I needed to open a support ticket and ask them to open smtp port 25. Great video Luke!
Thanks! Kind of silly they make you write a confession letter to unblock it

Looking sharp brother, thanks for the vid. Just got a domain, eager to setup my own email server. Would love to see a VoIP server tutorial as well.
Thanks for this tutorial. It puts a lot of power and independence for those of with enough skills to be dangerous. I use your instructions in building my own server. Right off the bat I notice there is a Debian 11. May I use this video for launching the new server exactly as laid out?
Luke finally living up to the ultimate minimalist ideal
Hey luke! I followed your steps with an ipv6 only server and it didn't seem to have any problems during the installation. Very explanatory guide, thanks! But, although i could receive mail successfully, i could not send any email. I'm not very comfortable with trouble shooting on linux so i just left it there. So yeah probably not an issue with only ipv6. Nice script btw
Very useful, thanks Luke!
Exactly what i wanted to do.
Thank you very much!

Important Note: If you're using Vultr, you may have to contact their support to inquire about the e-mail ports being opened or not, depending on your location. I had to have 'em open them up manually to get outbound mail working.
I just opened a support ticket with Vultr because it's also not working for me. I'm wondering if you had the same problem as me... Thunderbird won't connect. So I checked systemd on the server to find that dovecot failed to start because UFW blocked it. So I set UFW to allow ports 993 & 587 but still no go. Did that happen to you too?
@@DennisChaves That didn't happen with my case here, thankfully. The main issue I remember was the block they have administratively in Vultr's infrastructure for outbound mail. They may ask you a few details about what you're planning to do with the server and how much traffic you expect [they asked me], so just be prepared for that. :)
Dont worry, beardless luke is not exist, he will not hurt you

I'll have to rewatch that video to improve my raspberry pi server configs. Btw your email wiz script work out of the boxe on it, thanks for that!
Welcome to Luke's Master Class.
This was great. One nit-pick I have is that the www host is a CNAME record. Since there's only one ip in the domain it really doesn't matter though
Wow, I’ve learnt a bunch of stuff, how thing are made from the bottom, it looks more cheaper and more options are available, full customizable..
One thing you may want to mention in your video is the ports that are required to be open:
It was the Distrotube guy all along! I knew it!
Thanks, Luke. At some point I, and probably some others, would appreciate an email server walkthrough WITHOUT the script. Postfix config and such. It's strenuous/confusing and hard to find good content about it. Especially the spam aspect, and playing nice with the big carriers like Google. Thanks for your work.
no such thing as strenuox or etc, doesnt matter, do, can do any nmw s perfx
It's not that hard. Google has a page about setting up email to play nice with Gmail, there are loads of places that tell you how to set up your server and DNS records, and there are even sites that will test your mail server configuration's "spamminess" and explain where it falls short.

Glad too see an update on Caillou
LOVE your content and teaching style! How about a tutorial on deploying master and slave nameservers?
NOOOOOOO LUKE What Microsoft did to you????!!!!!
Awesome Tutorial.
I would need to use the vultr console at 9:00.
Vultr actually blocks port 25 by default, you might want to use sendgrid or a similar service to relay your emails to them via port 587, will also minimize risk of landing in a spam folder
when i clicked on the video it took me a few seconds to realize it was luke.
This is awesome, but what holds me back from making my own mail server is the maintenance. I can follow this tutorial well enough, but when something goes wrong a couple years down the road, I'll be high and dry with no email. I'd really appreciate videos about what maintaining a mail server is like and how to diagnose the problem when something goes wrong.
Also, a question: both the Vultr account and the certbot wizard require an email address. I would want to use my personal mail server as my primary (and, if possible, only) email, so can I use it for Vultr, Epik, and certbot? It seems like there might be a problem with using an email account as the credential for the hosting service which is hosting that same email account. If not, it seems like I need a second email account. What would be the best option for this?
Epik was hacked 2 weeks ago, wonder if Luke was affected.
I see what is happening. Luke changed places with DT.
Luke u scared me at first!!!
To everyone following at home, I've been butting my head with not being able to SEND emails. Turns out Vultr now blocks SMTP port 25 by default and you have to ask them for permission to uncuck your email. So much for your own emails I guess...
Also I had to add 0.0.0.0/0 to mynetworks in postfix config in order to not get relay access denied errors.
Thanks! Why do you think they do this? Weird you had to write a confession letter to get it unblocked
Hey Luke, lov ur videos man, you give us boomer food for thought :)
Note: on your host you need to actually set the name of the VPS to whatever your host name (like luke does). It's not mentioned that that creates a PTR record which is needed
Is this tutorial still accurate? I tried a while ago and never got it to work
