My list would probably be: 10. Gorefest 9. Broken Hope 8. Asphyx 7. Cancer 6. Deceased 5. Cannibal Corpse 4. Possessed 3. Necrophagia 2. Autopsy 1. Death
Was für eine geile Zeit das war als das ganze Zeug nach und nach auf Vinyl erschien und man immer härtere Sounds erhoffte zu erhaschen !! : ))Sream Bloody Gore !!
There are so many good pioneers of Death Metal out there... it's hard to pick out my top 10. But I think if I had to replace one from your list, I would take off Deicide and replace them with either Pugent Stench or Carcass. Great list!
My first Album in this genre was 'Leprosy' from Death and I'll always remember it as one Masterpiece and outstanding. I'd also ad Hypocrisy, Carcass and Unleashed to the list, which I remember as Giants of Death Metal!
Check them out, Repulsion - Helga lost her head, not sure when their first album came out. I had the sepultura and death album, I am going to have to check out seven churches.
Excellent list but you could have added any number of bands/albums. Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Carcass, and on and on. Too many great bands to list only 10.
@gombagod 'Close...' is good, eh? Kinda lost touch with them after 'Here In After', but I've been curious to see what their later albums were like, I'll have to keep an eye out for it...
I find it exiting, yes possessed was the very first death metal band. death metal was named after their first demo 'death metal', and this very song changed metal
I'm not sure if this would be considered "Death Metal" but the first two Sepultura albums were cool. Arise sort of borderlined death metal but after that, starting with Chaos A.D. they were basically a thrash band.
Increible, le llaman ahora la vieja escuela del death metal, cuando yo vivi y goce esa musica hasta mas no poder y aun la oigo y la gozo, ESTOY VIEJOOOOOOO, JAJAJAJA
I started listening to death metal when I was 12 back in OKC. The greats were the bands that didn't sale out. Doesn't mater what his picks are they all kicked ass when we were kids. Carry the Torch friend.
I would consider Possessed to be Thrash, but they were an inspiration for the sub genre. I consider Death's,"Scream Bloody Gore," to be the first true Death Metal recording.
that's obvious.... I agree should be placed first and forefront. sepultura should be second though with their old school shit... I'm talking schizophrenia album and so forth ..
James Parks Meh. He was a musical genius, and they tend to take control of things. However, Death is much more than Chuck Schuldiner. There have been musicians in that band that were equally respected, like Sean Reinhart, Gene Hoglan, and Steve Digorgio just to name a few.
Great list! Even if you're not a fan of some of the bands (Personally, I despise Deicide) you can't deny the impact they had on the genre. Man, I remember when 'Slowly We Rot' first came out, crazy!! Never was a fan of Autopsy either, but Jayzus, what an evil sound they had...That's the problem with most modern death metal; no indentity. They can all fucking shred, but they all sound the same. I miss the good old days....
The band named Possessed was created at the same time the band Death was. Just because it took the release of Possessed's first album to label it death metal doesn't change the style of music. That style had been around since both Possessed and Death were formed and playing in clubs (even if they were called thrash at one point). It's not like a band becomes what they are labeled as after the album comes out. The music they played before and after the album's release was the same.
yeah he should of made a top 20 cuz theres too many good old school death metal bands out there but hes got a few of my favorites on here deicide obituary autopsy malevolent creation entomber ok there was 5 lol all great!!!
@deathbox75 I lost touch with them too.Haven't listened to any of their shit since "harnessing ruin" back in 05.but yea, "close" is an extremly badass album. One of their seminal works along with Dawn of possession and here and after.Close to a world below came out in 2000, which is well before I even knew about them.If I had listened to it when it first came out I wouldve shit my pants. Its got a fairly slow almost death/doom sound to it which is probably why I really took to it.
@gombagod Absofuckinglutely!! 'Unquestionable Presence' has to be one of the BEST death metal (if you wanna call it that) releases of all time. Also liked the nod to Immolation - Their first album was a monster...
This is a great list. I dont know why everybody has a problem with this. Death sure deserves to be number 1. Autopsy... Chris Reifert and Chuck Schuldiner recorded the first ever Death Metal album together, "Scream Bloody Gore"... if Chuck is the godfather of Death Metal, then Chris was kind of what made the initial Death Metal complete, from all the contributions of Chuck (I'd say Death Metal is 70% Chuck, 20% Possessed, and 10% Chris). So, Autopsy in my opinion would deserve rank 2 or 3, depending if you want Possessed in this list or not. Personally I dont, but many do... so, whatever. Obituary, Entombed, Morbid Angel and Deicide had to be in this list. Their order can be changed randomly, doesnt matter, only thing that matters is that they are in here. Malevolent Creation is a great Death Metal band, but I dont think rank 2 is good for it... rank 8 or something would suit it better. But hey, the list in general is just great. Only one band I really miss in this list is Dismember. But hey, not every band can be in the top 10, eh? \m/ RIP Chuck
maybe vocal wise, i have never heard them but the order of the first 3 death metal albums are: possessed - seven churches (1985), sepultura - morbid visions (1986) and death - scream bloody gore (1987). most death fans would probably disagree with this...
I wouldn't necessarily say so. Their parent band, Possessed was another major influence on the sound. Either way, without those two bands there were still in existence many thrash bands that evoked an image of gore/death (the common outfit/scramble for so many of death metal's fans). Either way, there would have been someone to credit. It's not as if it wouldn't have came along sooner or later (I think many would be surprised of how soon the resurgence might come, if there was no Death).
Damn, these bands are kick ass, I still hear a few of them today, and the rest I don't know. But all of them should be jamming becuaes they fucking kick ass. I can only play a little but someday I will be there!
Only two I could argue with there, from a personal perspective, are Entombed and Deicide. That's because I never rated them myself I'd put Pestilence ahead of them. Consuming Impulse is immense and Martin Van Drunen's vocals are simply epic. I'd also add Suffocation to that list as Effigy of the Forgotten is incredible.
1 - DEATH
2 - Obituary
3 - Pestilence
4 - Benediction
5 - Malevolent Creation
6 - Entombed
7 - Gorefest
8 - Cancer
9 - Massacre
10 - Gorguts / Nocturnus / Morgoth
+VEGETARIAN mainstream deaths
+Mark Collins you listen to Arch Enemy and complain about mainstream....
Benediction, Gorefest, and Morgoth arent mainstream
zomg guys xddddd too mainstream xddddddd
EXTREME VEGAN missing Autopsy
My list would probably be:
10. Gorefest
9. Broken Hope
8. Asphyx
7. Cancer
6. Deceased
5. Cannibal Corpse
4. Possessed
3. Necrophagia
2. Autopsy
1. Death
The 8 dislikes are the members of Vader and Benediction (or possibly Bolt Thrower and Pungent Stench), depending on how you count the band members!
To me the big 4 of death metal are:
Cannibal Corpse
Obituary
Death
Morbid Angel
Magic Steve I agree but to me Obituary first place 😈💀🤘
@Харьков HoReCa They didn't create Death Metal.
My most listened to album of all time in the 90's was Obituarys Slowly We Rot so nice to see it in the list.
Was für eine geile Zeit das war als das ganze Zeug nach und nach auf Vinyl erschien und man immer härtere Sounds erhoffte zu erhaschen !! : ))Sream Bloody Gore !!
BOLT THROWER
great band but terrible live though
Ethan Kraus cant say i agree with you, but i havnt seen that much of em live
1/Death

Great list man. Love all the bands.
Malevolent creation
by far the best list I've seen good job
The best list I have seen on youtube. Thanks you for Uploading this.
very nice compilation. brings me back to my youth. thank u so much
Great choices. Still, one can't have osdm top10 without Bolt Thrower in there. \m/
Can't disagree, this list is utter perfection
Jack Brown hi again wow
thats a nice video, im going to tattoo 1 part of the death logo, there is more bands u can add but its still a great recopilation
There are so many good pioneers of Death Metal out there... it's hard to pick out my top 10. But I think if I had to replace one from your list, I would take off Deicide and replace them with either Pugent Stench or Carcass.
Great list!
I looked seven churches up and it did remind me of morbid visions...glad you liked repulsion...love finding and sharing new(old) metal...
I met the Cancer guys a few months ago in Scruffy Murphy's pub in Birmingham. Such great guys, as an 18 yr old i felt starstruck at first
My first Album in this genre was 'Leprosy' from Death and I'll always remember it as one Masterpiece and outstanding. I'd also ad Hypocrisy, Carcass and Unleashed to the list, which I remember as Giants of Death Metal!
Check them out, Repulsion - Helga lost her head, not sure when their first album came out. I had the sepultura and death album, I am going to have to check out seven churches.
Solid compilation dude, I would of made room for Pestilence though personally.
Excelent Compilation, Finally one good
Excellent list but you could have added any number of bands/albums. Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, Napalm Death, Carcass, and on and on. Too many great bands to list only 10.
Did I influence this? Lol
Robb Kelley After your post I started watching Entombed videos which lead me here.
Chris Williams Napalm Death is Grindcore, not Death Metal...
stop fucking saying suffocation, suffocation is brutal death metal
***** So is Immolation.
i have the severed survival album by autopsy and really recommend it because it's classic death metal at it's best!!!
@gombagod 'Close...' is good, eh? Kinda lost touch with them after 'Here In After', but I've been curious to see what their later albums were like, I'll have to keep an eye out for it...
I approve of Autopsy. And thanks for recognizing Gorguts and Immolation.
excelent choices, i don't know if i would have kept the same order, but these bands are a must for death metal.
Loved your selection, pal. Death (the band) is truly epic
Nice selection!!!
amazing top man, congratulations
You seem to be on every death metal video, dude. Keep it metal. \m/ \m/
DAM RIGHT WITH THEIR FLESH HE'LL CREATE! im about to drum cover that song tomarrow
Great selection!!! All classicals!!!!
pure metal ,we rear the musik very clean, inside the ear.quebra tudo.
cool, old school!!
Solid list man. Most people forget Gorguts.
Play this stuff on the radio today and I'd actually listen to it!
Awesome list!
@superchef78 Yeah, And Also, Obituary Was around the same area as Death, and formed only a year late i believe?
good audio/video!!
great selection
I find it exiting, yes possessed was the very first death metal band. death metal was named after their first demo 'death metal', and this very song changed metal
I'm not sure if this would be considered "Death Metal" but the first two Sepultura albums were cool. Arise sort of borderlined death metal but after that, starting with Chaos A.D. they were basically a thrash band.

Si tienes mas de 50 años .somos metaleros vieja guardia.
Possessed and Cannibal Corpse should be on this list too.
I started listening to death metal when I was 12 back in OKC. The greats were the bands that didn't sale out. Doesn't mater what his picks are they all kicked ass when we were kids. Carry the Torch friend.
Totally agree, these are the best old school bands!
Solid list man
Great video!
Pretty good list. I like that autopsy made the top three. I also would have included, Athiest and Nocturnus.
I would consider Possessed to be Thrash, but they were an inspiration for the sub genre. I consider Death's,"Scream Bloody Gore," to be the first true Death Metal recording.
Your list is almost exactly the way I would of put it, yewwww!! \m/
I love your list. I agree 100% with it.
Great choices !!
Finally someone with actual taste. Anyone with common sense would know to place Death at #1.
In terms of influence on the genre, for sure. Still though, musically speaking, I don't know if they're a clear cut #1 spot.
that's obvious.... I agree should be placed first and forefront. sepultura should be second though with their old school shit... I'm talking schizophrenia album and so forth ..
it's one man that created that band... through and through ... people tagged along but it was chuck the whole time ...
James Parks Meh. He was a musical genius, and they tend to take control of things. However, Death is much more than Chuck Schuldiner. There have been musicians in that band that were equally respected, like Sean Reinhart, Gene Hoglan, and Steve Digorgio just to name a few.
The Hound what about James Murphy bud if you didn't know he played for obituary death cancer testament and I'm pretty sure there's one more
I'm just here to see all the cool album covers
Needs more swedish bands like Dismember, Grave, Unleashed but otherwise good video, good band choice. 10/10
Provide a link in support of that assertion for affirmation, please.
Great list! Even if you're not a fan of some of the bands (Personally, I despise Deicide) you can't deny the impact they had on the genre. Man, I remember when 'Slowly We Rot' first came out, crazy!! I miss the good old days....
good list, i always have a tough time deciding ten commandants or retribution, both kill
Nice list good to see cancer up there
Hey folks. This HIS/HERS top 10 old school death metal bands; not ours! Great list, by the way. I have all those records, except for Gorguts.
@KyUuTiP Ha ha, well said!! Cancer was a nice touch, you don't hear much about these guys when you read about classic DM....
is the first time I listen to Cancer and Entombed, I liked the bands :) and yeah, Death is my all time favorite death metal band
The band named Possessed was created at the same time the band Death was. Just because it took the release of Possessed's first album to label it death metal doesn't change the style of music. What about Pestilence and Massacre? Great to see Cancer on that list though!
Entombed, Deicide, Gorguts..my favorites
Great Compilation! But i think the best old school death metal band is MASTER
Does anyone know the death metal band "Twinj"?!
:0 the first song is fire!!🔥
yeah he should of made a top 20 cuz theres too many good old school death metal bands out there but hes got a few of my favorites on here deicide obituary autopsy malevolent creation entomber ok there was 5 lol all great!!!
Early Gorguts is super underrated...Love that shit, and love all these bands.
@DeathvoidX9 I didn't realize that they fell under that category, but i'll take your word for it. I agree though, they are f*cking sweet.
I love Carcass, Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Suffocation and Sinister, but they are Grind / Death or Brutal Death Metal.
Its got a fairly slow almost death/doom sound to it which is probably why I really took to it.
i wonder if the cool calm tone of GRAVE should be on this list.
@gombagod Absofuckinglutely!! 'Unquestionable Presence' has to be one of the BEST death metal (if you wanna call it that) releases of all time. Also liked the nod to Immolation - Their first album was a monster...

No classic Carcass?
incantation, asphyx, morgoth, bolt thrower, vomitory, benediction, insanity, nightmare, master's hammer, and baphomet.
I wouldn't necessarily say so. Their parent band, Possessed was another major influence on the sound. Either way, without those two bands there were still in existence many thrash bands that evoked an image of gore/death (the common outfit/scramble for so many of death metal's fans). daaamn this is what im talking bout right here man love this shit
DAMN that immolation song was kick ass, those guys are 100% badass.
Good job , in the next top: Morgoth,Incantation,Unleashed,Bolt Thrower....\mm/
One source (wikipedia) says '85. Another says '88 (metal-Archives). I don't know which one is more correct.
Great :D But i miss Possessed :(
Damn, these bands are kick ass, I still hear a few of them today, and the rest I don't know. But all of them should be jamming becuaes they fucking kick ass. I can only play a little but someday I will be there!
First album of Darkthrone, Soulside Journey(1991) is death metal album. And it is fucking good death metal.
nice list id also add atheist and sepultura
good list but wheres opprobrium(incubus) they were around since 1988, but they were also considered thrash also
Couldn't narrow down to ten so I did five.
5. Ghoul
4. Cancer
3. Entombed
2. Pestilence
1. Autopsy
Indeed. It seems we have similar tastes. :D
dude you forgot gutted(US) and solstice too but also a lot of good bands!
Only two I could argue with there, from a personal perspective, are Entombed and Deicide. That's because I never rated them myself I'd put Pestilence ahead of them. Consuming Impulse is immense and Martin Van Drunen's vocals are simply epic. I'd also add Suffocation to that list as Effigy of the Forgotten is incredible.
i love them all good fucking line up on choices
