Recorder in rock/pop: playing the solos from 36 songs | Team Recorder
Вставка
- Опубліковано 17 вер 2024
- Did you know the recorder has been used in hundreds of pop/rock songs, from the 1960s on? I was going to make a video where I talk about it all, but then I decided to choose a bunch of my favourite examples and just play it for you 😅
A few notes!
- there are soooooo many more songs. If I've missed out your favourite - next time! Share it below ;)
- not all of these songs were strictly recorder, a couple were for flute or whistle. Or even synth. But I thought they fit the main theme and deserved a shout out!
Thanks to Windkanal magazine for compiling so many songs! You can find SIX youtube playlists featuring recorder in popular music here: www.windkanal....
The bands I included that actually feature really professional recorder players:

That Africa performance was gold! That's exactly what everyone listening to that classic looks like.
"El Cóndor Pasa" was compossed by Daniel Alomía Robles, a Peruvian Musician. Simon and Garfunkel just covered an arrangement by Los Incas, an Argentinian Folk Band.
Though, the work of Paul with the lyrics was great, it gave so much feeling to their version of the song
5:09 omg I’m Turkish and I wasn’t expecting to hear this! one of my favorites, thanks for including it ❤️ beautiful!!
Indeed, I was shocked 😂 dear Sarah thank you very much for playing "Bana bir masal anlat baba", one of the songs reminding me of my childhood and happy days, and the other beautiful songs 😍😍😍 loves from Turkey ❤️
❤️❤️ I asked on social media what everyones favs were and I think someone on twitter recommended it!
bende hiç düşünmüyordum
benim de hiç beklemediğim yerden geldi
Me too!
The look of joy when you are playing Africa - and I know how good that will have felt to pull off under your fingers! Fantastic !
Sarah, you earned a whole new level of respect. Amazing talent. Keep up the good work. Many emotions brought out in such a short time. Well done!
Yes, I love the double recorder technique!
The part of the tenor recorder in Bonzo Dog Band's "I'm the urban spaceman" is amongst others what made me decide to get me one to play the instrument myself.
Africa is one of my faves. We played that song for our online music class last week. They loved it. The precious look on your face is priceless. Great video!
This shows how versatile the recorder is! 👌🏻
Impressive but... can you play Through The Fire and Flames?
Wrong channel xD
But nice reference
I can 😁. On piano and not at 200bpm but I can play it.
Shitty song.
Actually exists a video on YT, with a guy, i think that his name is Alejandro, he tried it with the limitations of the recorder, but he nailed it !!
Epico!!
I discovered your channel 1 week ago, it got recommended because I decided to try to start the flute again during the lockdown, so I watched a lot of flute videos and bam you got recommended.
I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL. Luckily I got my soprano and tenor recorders from my parents house from back in the time when i played in my middle school recorder ensemble, I might try to play them again!
And I think Toto should hire you for his next tour (if they reform), this Africa solo was GREAT!
Cheers from France.
The best part of your videos is to see how much you enjoy making them. Congratulations from Seville, Spain.
I admit I'm quite ignorant in popular music, so I didn't even know any of these except for the two very most famous two ("My hearth will go on" and "Africa"), anyway that's a fabolous medley. Best compliments!
Sarah I love your style and technique in
playing so many diverse pop songs keep on piping
The Africa solo sounds WAY better on recorder. :-) I want to hear the whole thing that way!
Before watching I made sure The Fool On The Hill is there. Great!
(uh, sorry, but... "Ruby Tuesday" is by The Rolling Stones)
ahhhh shit my brain was frazzled! thanka!
@@Team_Recorder LOL😂
Please fix it! Brian's recorder magic deserves major recognition! 💗 You are fabulous! Someone said though there's some Jefferson Airplane here??
Would be awesome to see soundtrack(film, tv series, videogames, anime...) that features the recorder.
Hello Sarah!
This was immensely entertaining and it really proved - as if there were still need to prove it - how versatile and musical the recorder can be.
About these songs, there were some that I had heard before but I admit I had mistook the recorder for a flute... please don't ban me!
Therefore I'm awestruck by how suitable the recorder is for pop and modern "easy" music.
And once again, a great video from you!
The recorder is a very versatile instrument. I'm always playing tunes from the Great American Song Book from the 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's on the recorder. :)
OMG YOU MADE MY WHOLE LIFE BETTER WITH BUS DRIVER. I never, ever expected that, this is one of my all-time favorites and juse, wow, thank you and I hope your are having an amazing day, you absolute legend.
Ahhh awesome 😄❤️
I ordered myself an affordable yamaha recorder and i can't wait for it to arrive so I can start learning
I loved your choices! Coming back to me, by Jefferson Airplane, is lovely too.
The song in 7:28 is amazing, also the playing
Dunno how you did it, but I'm glad you dood it. Whew!
Delightful! Thank you.
Great job, showing us how flexible the recorder can be. The nay sayers always need to point out inaccuracies as if it's their superpower, look at me I see something wrong. I heard solos that worked extremely well with the original recordings and would love to hear more.....
You never cease to amaze me,....... genius.
When you play stairway to heaven in recorder store, is it illegal?
😂😂😂😂
Lmao hahaha
@Dutch Polyglot xD
It’s at the very least against store policy
**points to sign**
There might be a sign behind the counter about the Titanic theme.
I HAVE BIN WATCHING FOR A WHILE I ASSUMED YOU WERE NOT MAKING VIDEOS .GREAT TO HEAR YOU PLAY THESE SONGS.I AM IN MY 70'S AND AM A NEW STUDENT..THANKS AGAIN USA
A recorder in Kraftwerk? Unbelievable!!! I love them so damn much!
RIP Florian Schneider
Sarah , This video is EPIC! Thank you.
So I did a tiny bit of research and the reason the Africa "flute" solo has five sharps is (besides ofc just being the key), they actually wrote it for keyboard synthesiser! They used a synthesiser (for the recording as well) to emulate a "brassy flute" sound (per wikipedia), but certainly the part would be much easier to play on a keyboard than a recorder. Though I think your version sounds much nicer :)
That was so much FUN! Thank you!
Hey, play Mago de Oz, an Spanish folk-metal band. It has flute and witsels that you can play. Please team recorder. Like if you want this.
@Carlos Fernando Saucedo por? Explica porfa.
@@julioquintana4782 Me imagino porque no escogió una canción de Mago para este vídeo, debido a que fueron sugerencias de sus seguidores en redes sociales.
Great performance! I love your version of the "Africa" solo - sounds quite nice on the recorder.
Just wow! impressive!!
I love Spark-die klassische Band! Both their piece and recorder techniques are amazing!
ua-cam.com/video/Qp-DhGTQseY/v-deo.html
Excellent! Good memories!
The theme from titanic was played on a low d tin whistle. Fairytale of new York was also a tin whistle played by spider Stacey of the pogues. And I think I’m right in saying el condo pasa was played on a quena which is a traditional flute played in Peru and Bolivia.
7:49... oh wow that sound 🥰
1:49 I love how you started moving when Fool On The Hill came in
I thought the same! I want to play fool on the hill so bad!
Thanks Sarah, for this amazing video. And thanks also to mention the windkanal magazine. Proud to see the Modern Alto in your video!
❤️❤️❤️
Someone finally did what I've always thought of but wasn't skilled enough to do myself. Thank you so much!!! Saving this as one of my favorite videos of all time!
Just remembered one of favourite recorder moments in modern music: In Enya's Exile. Mesmerizing😍
Girl! You rock!!!🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Brilliant - inspirational too.
You're a delight. Thanks. Ruby Tuesday was the first song I ever learned. What fun. Cheers.
They sound awesome like always
Abba used recorders in their latest album Voyage (2021), as stated in their album notes.
We can hear a beautiful recorder duet in "Bumblebee".
"When you danced with me" might have incorporated recorder in its music as well.
You'll probably be bombarded with the tunes that weren't covered, so here's mine: All Good Gifts from Godspell, I believe still classifies as pop; unless you were going to do another video on all the Broadway tunes. Great video!
That's the one that got me started; I played the solo for a high school choir concert. Had to check out a book to find the proper way to play the high G.
Many thanks for posting music featuring pop/rock music. I loved it. My fav with Mike Oldfield but I couldn't get the other tune from Mike Oldfield Ommadawn out of my head. I have not idea if it has a title but, it's about 6.57 minutes in lots of recorders. Thanks again.
Just Amazing!!!
I was really hoping to hear something from Eluveitie, they have a tin whistle solo in most of their songs.
I was expecting the same thing
Amazing!
Ruby tuesday is a Rolling Stones' song
Rolling stones ? Who are they ??? ;-) ;-) ;-)
Nope is from Bob Marley
I hadn't even noticed it was wrong until I looked back. I guess it does sound more like the Beatles than most Stones songs. Oh, well.
@@CFWhitman I'm pretty sure it was meant as a joke
The video / audio transitions are so good. Love it
WOW! Gnidrolog! And 'You can cal me Al', 'Portsmouth', GENTLE GIANT!!!...
I can recommend my friend, accomplished composer/rock artist/keyboardist/recorder virtuoso Richard Harvey, who played on 'England my Lionheart' by K. Bush and on a brilliant cover of Beatles' 'Mother Nature's Son' with his own band, Gryphon.
Uh, sorry... 'Ruby Tuesday' is by the Stones... ;-)
Was looking for a "wow! gnidrolog!"-comment, almost thought I'd have to leave one of my own! That, and I was waiting to see if she'd play anything Gryphon.
@@edvinsmusic Came here hoping I'd hear some Gryphon as well. I did a guitar impression of "Second Spasm" a little while back, including the multilayered recorder solo at the end. But it'd be great to see someone try double-tonguing all three harmony melodies on the recorder! 😂 (I've got them all transcribed in MIDI, in case anyone wants a go at it... 😜)
ua-cam.com/video/mPxwwQOEruU/v-deo.html
Love that you included gentle giant
Thank you for this, Sarah! The best work I've seen and listened recently!
Yesss! Amazing covers! We want more videos like this! :D
Amazing - so fun to watch & listen. More, please!
Just amazing, like always
This is amazing!!! I love that the recorder has been used in folk/pop music!!! This inspires me more to learn the recorder :D
Absolutely gorgeous!!! 😍😍😍
I went to see Harry Potter with a live orchestra with my recorder orchestra once and we were so happy that there were 2 recorder players who got a lot of solo parts. We felt so represented it was wonderful :')
Wow, that put a big smile on my face and made my day. Thanks!
This was incredible. I fell in love, but I don't know if it were of you playing all of those recorders, or if it were of all those amazing songs you have chosen.
omg this is amazing! Thank you!
The Move!!! The amazing Roy Wood playing the recorder! I'd subscribe now, but I've already done it.
That was an absolutely astounding performance. And there are so many more recorders in popmusic. Maybe you've heard swedish pop group Tages "So Many Girls"?
That was really fun to watch and listen to. Few new songs I need to track down.
Wot no Boy with the Arab Strap? One of my favourite recorder solos, and pretty iconic!
"Sing" by the Carpenters starts out with a recorder solo, as do the theme songs from the American TV shows "Taxi" and "Room 222"
I love modern genre fusions with classical instruments. This is so cool😄😍
I completly forgot about Duran Durans Chauffeur! Thanks!
my thought: and there are about 3......... then she says "and there are 100s I am going to choose 36 of the most popular" me: wait what? holy crap.... eyes wrenched open .... thank you
Thank you soooooo much for this wonderful video... you inspired me big time
Fantastic! Loved the proggy ones at the end, and I'm so pleased you got the Divine Comedy in too.! Their Regeneration album has loads of recorder in it.
That was nice. Thank you.
For a little more from precious Gentle Giant, you might search for "Gentle Giant - In Concert - ZDF TV Special - Live in Brussels 1974" on UA-cam, forward to 35:30 mark and watch them transform to 4 recorders and 1 percussion. All of the members are multi-instrumentalists and they've achieved a unique, fascinating blend throughout their collective effort, 1970-1980.
Smiling and waving from Istanbul.
a lot of bossa nova songs translate well into flute, like Carinhoso, Corcovado and Aquarela do Brasil
Such a great item, so much fun!!!
I only knew a few of these, generally the older ones. I liked 'You Can Call Me Al' and 'Africa' in particular because they were trickier looking to do and also because I knew the songs. My conclusion from listening to this is that a lot of those probably under-utilised the recorder to some extent, and my appreciation for jazz and classical goes up.
Excellent !!!! Thanks Sarah
Not a Recorder originally (it's played on Transverse Flute) but I learned all of the Flute parts on Soprano Recorder to Firefall's "You are the Woman", that's my favorite Flute intro ever. The 1st fill I pitch an octave higher, the 3rd I play the low A as a high A... but it all still works. 😎
Wow! I would have thought there were none! Great video!!
Brilliant video, thanks :) I'm a clarinettist and I did the Africa solo for a friend on my A so only two sharps (phew). I play a lot of Nights in White Satin solos (or I did) on the recorder down the pub, also Men at Work - Down Under. My absolute faves to steal are the sax and fiddle solos/riffs from Waterboys' Whole of the Moon and Fisherman's Blues.
Little umbrellas by frank zappa hot rats. Little recorder solo near the end. Zappa loved the recorder according to his autobiography.
The 1987 mix is the one with all the recorders, even the bit left out the mix on the original release. Freaked me out when I heard it for the first time!
m.ua-cam.com/video/rzvChwt5ReI/v-deo.html
Fabulous, Sarah!💕🥳👏🎉🎶
I’m so excited for the comfort tenor demo! I also play flute and really wanted a tenor originally, but have had a terrible time with my plastic yamaha. 😭 Luckily my son took it up and I learned the alto lol. So I can’t wait!
holy shit some gentle giant there. amazed. love it
I knew you would keep that Modern when i watched your review... loved traces in my mind
I've been looking for this.
Really fun!! Thanks Sarah!
Gentle Giant! :D Thanks!
LOVED THIS!!!!!
So cool. Some of my faves made the list.
delightful Sarah! Congratulations!!
That was amazing!!!!!
Mandalorian!!!!! ok you just killed me there. That was fantastic.
I really loved the “Toto/Africa”. Thank you 😊
YESS I LOVE TOTO - AFRICA!!! I feel exactly like you in the video when I listen to that song :D
My hats off to you - this was fun some i had heard of and others goodness were quite a bit new to me
