    the good ol' days. I remember that Metro Conference.. Memphis St, Denny Crum' Louisville, Virginia Tech, etc. Another defunct Southern hoops conference I liked, Sun Belt.. ODU, VCU, Western Kentucky, etc.

      I'm totally with you (Metro had some great schools) - it also shows how conferences change (Tulsa in the Missouri Valley, for instance) and smaller conferences getting multiple bids (WCC then, and again now)

    North Carolina was the preseason #1 in 1982 and won the championship. Sports Illustrated revealed it by putting 4 of the North Carolina starters on the cover. The 1 starter missing from that Sports Illustrated cover was Michael Jordan

    Poor DePaul. Third year in a row they lost their first game in the tournament. They went 26-1 twice and 27-1 in the regular season from 1980-1982.

      That's because they didn't play any tough competition all season. Then first round of the tournament they would match up against a team that played a tough schedule and tournament tested and they choked each time.

      Coaching, or lack thereof. At least Boston College was a good team, but DePaul had no business losing to St Joe's in 1981. In 1980, DePaul was the #1 overall seed but sent out west. They blew UCLA out in the regular season at Pauley Pavilion but lost to them in the tournament

    By the way, for those top seeds that got first-round byes, they did get knocked off in their first game a bit more often than you would think. Sometimes they were a little rusty, but the opponent was not, because it had just played a couple days earlier.

    Part of the reason CBS got the contract for the NCAA tournament from NBC(but not the only reason) was that CBS promised the NCAA they would do a selection show. Prior to this NBC had never done a selection show.

      I watched a copy of the final Saturday NBC Broadcast from 1978 (UNLV@Kentucky), and the announcers talked about how the pairings would be announced at halftime of the next day's NBC broadcast between Michigan and UCLA. Also, in 1980 and 81, NBC televised the announcement of the tourney pairings on SportsWorld.

      Don Monson was the coach at Idaho. He had been an assistant at Michigan State when Magic Johnson was there. He played a significant role in recruiting Magic Johnson. Monson went to Idaho and rode the wave of success he had at Michigan State to put together some great Idaho teams. His son Dan would later help build the Gonzaga Basketball Program with Dan Fitzgerald as the architect from the ground up to a powerhouse that Mark Few took to the next level.

      @@deputay Yea, I would also guess that with Nascar racing usually stationed in the southeast that time of year, maybe it was just a short commute for him (maybe with the aforementioned snow too). You see Pat O'brien & Verne Lundquist contributing, they both started with CBS within a year before then. Going back to Squier, I HAVE seen him cover some "CBS Sports Sunday" events such as college volleyball and he was included on the network's winter olympic coverage in the 90's. But he never did any NFL play by play. I do know that some racing announcers did college or arena football pbp. Eli Gold & Bill Weber did both and Allen Bestwick recently did some mountain region college football for ESPN before.

      @@deputay No I have not, I do know that he wrote a book (my brother has it) and I guess he mentioned in it that he thought when he hosted "Bowling for Dollars" (I'd assume in his home Dallas/Ft. Worth Market and in the late 70's) that he thought that was going to end his career. So what's this story about this UNLV-SC game?

    • @deputay
      @deputay  2 роки тому

      The story goes that Verne was at ABC Sports at the time and feeling like he wasn't getting any traction there & looking to get out. CBS Sports was willing to give him an on-air tryout, & put him with Irv Brown on the UNLV/SC game which was slotted for the Nevada and South Carolina markets only. (Rest of the country got Louisville/Memphis so the "powers that be" at ABC won't even know about it...right?) The Louisville/Memphis game ends early and the whole country gets the exciting end of the other game with Verne on the call. To top it off, he's on this show, too! ABC was (as you can imagine) not pleased at all, and let him go. CBS, appreciative for the extra duty that day (and his willingness to do the game) picks him up...and the rest is history!
