Installing Scissor Jacks to Level the Bus

  • After living in the bus for over 6 months, we knew it was finally time to install some scissor jacks to level the skoolie when we park! Until now, we've been making do by using leveling blocks, which means you have to set them up and then drive up onto them, which may take several tries to get just right. Also, some places require more leveling blocks than others, so we needed to buy a second set of blocks... but that would take up even more space! Installing scissor jacks was the perfect solution: they're already in place when mounted on the bus, so all we'll have to do is power-drill them into position each time we park the bus! Perfecto!

    About Us:
Hi! We are Mike & Kerry, the proud owners of a 1992 Bluebird rear engine (pusher), 40' school bus! We named her Bussy McBusface in honor of the RRS Boaty McBoatface travesty!
We're building a Tiny-Home-in-a-Bus for full-time living in the most adventure-friendly way possible! In other words, Bussy will not be parked in our driveway, waiting for weekend or holiday getaways... when we finish the build, we'll be packing everything we're keeping into the bus and driving away from this old house forever!
We plan to be boondocking the majority of the time, so you'll see that reflected in our choices throughout the build (100 gallon water tank, composting toilet, solar power system, etc). We'd love to have you stick around and follow us on our journey, throughout the Skoolie Build, and to Infinite Adventures Beyond!
    Mike & Kerry

Get some wood planks to put under the jacks so when you extend them, they don't dig into soft ground.

Tip! When picking up anything small with a magnet, put the magnet in a plastic bag and when through hold the bag over the trash and pull the magnet out through the top of the bag and the metal fillings will fall off into the trash and you won't have to pick all the small shards off the magnet.

👍🏻❤️ had scissor jacks on my travel trailer, only issue I ever had with them was when one got bent by hitting low spot, had to replace. So mounting location is important. Great video. 👍🏻 also, thanks for explanation about oil on drill bits, it’s going to save me grief & $$ when I start drilling for my rivenuts. 👍🏻

Great idea with the stabilizer jacks, but use wood blocks under them (4×4 stubs work well) as the more they extend up, the less stable they are. My 5'er has those on the back end and really make a big difference too!👍👌

I hope they work for like you expect. They look like what they put on 5th wheels and the companies say they are not for leveling just stabilizing, so the rv doesn't rock when you walk around inside. 7500 lbs sounds like they should work to raise it some. Like someone else said keep that nut and screw that does the lifting lubed with some good grease. PB Blaster makes a spray white lithium grease. Great job Mike. Safe travels!

Consider making some pads to set on the ground below each jack for a stable base. I cut 1/2” plywood into 12” squares. Then cut 12” pieces of 2x4. Sandwich 3 of the 12” 2x4 between 2 of the 12” plywood squares. Screw each plywood square into each of the sandwiched 2x4 pieces with 1-1/4” flat head screws. I carry 8 of these pads as they can be stacked 2 or 3 high if needed on very uneven surfaces. For maximum stability and leveling use as little jack height as possible.

There not for leavening, they stabilizer your rig, that is what rv uses them for around here any ways, they can lift up your rig by inches, but there just meant for taking the movement out of the floor, when your walking across it, i gut a big rig too and i us short boards .

Don't use the WD40 (unless it is a special type of lubricant one) on the gears. WD40 is a penetrate, not a lubricant. Rub some ANTI-SIZE on the shaft instead. Also, be careful of mud on the shaft with running it with a drill. A rock could mess up the threads.

Does your bus have metal springs or air suspension? Mine has air suspension, so I am on the fence with hydraulics or possibly a home made super duty version of a screw jack. I really like your jack drill. I've used a 2X4 with a fulcrum, but that is awesome. I might suggest that a larger steel plate on the bottom will help with settling. (May not be a problem in Arizona...)
