That's what _every_ company does when a game doesn't do so well. If the game doesn't do well, its not all that worth investing in. As cool as the concept of Epic Mickey is, it makes sense why it got cancelled, as the gameplay is one of the most important aspects of a _game._ This isn't one of those "Disney's so evil and greedy" moments this is a "the game flopped because people didn't enjoy playing it" moment. I remember when EM 2 was being advertised during the last few Festival of Masters art event in 2012 at Downtown Disney. They had a booth for EM 2 where you can play the game and there were even some of the devs there (Not Warren), they were all really nice people and I was able to buy the game a week early and got a EM Mickey and Oswald pin with it.
My parents don’t often buy me video games, so I STARTED the series with the second game (which they bought to allude to our upcoming Disneyland trip), and I don’t know if it was simply the sheer excitement of a new video game combined with that of a trip to Disneyland, but I LOVED Epic Mickey 2. Of course, it has its flaws. In the Junkyard or whatever that level’s called, Oswald is supposed to offer to throw you up onto a ledge, but on ONE SPECIFIC SAVE FILE HE NEVER OFFERS (the same thing also happens in Mean Street South, where you’re supposed to get thrown onto a clock), and the alternate path out of the level involved keeping Invisible Ink on long enough to pass a camera that would shut the door to the exit if it saw you. Needless to say, the ink ALWAYS wore off before I could get past the camera. I beat it flawlessly on a second save file though. The postgame is rather simple in that there isn’t one, aside from wrapping up all the quests you haven’t so far. I think really it was just the appeal of bending reality to my will that appealed to my 11 year old brain, LMAO. Anyways, point is, this is a very good review that I’d be hard pressed to argue with. Good work!
@6:47 I wouldn't say Oswald "defaced" the infamous statue of Walt, but made an improvement in his eyes. Odd to say, but the relationship growth between Oswald and Mickey was my favorite aspect of the entire series

I absolutely love this review. Lots of people only focus on the bad or good of the franchise, whereas this review really points out what is good and bad about the games. I didn’t realise how ignorant I was of reviews of the epic mickey series pouring scorn on people who said the games weren’t great, but in all reality I never looked at the bad because of my nostalgia. I really like this review also because it highlights the wonderful care and attention that was put in on the tiny details around the map which is really the only reason I liked the first game. Thanks for such a great review
I also grew up with this franchise and I would at least call it innovative. I remember looking at old Disney cartoons and wishing something like that was made again since I as getting kinda tired of all the CGI animations that were being made. When this game was announced, it felt almost like a blast from the past, but still reimagined as a game for older audiences. Disney were testing the grounds of stuff for more mature audiences (besides the 7 and 8 year olds that watched Mickey Mouse Clubhouse), and I give them credit for that. As you said, a lot of love and passion went into this game. I got this game on my 10th or 11th birthday, around the time it came out. I loved diving into that game's lore and art. It inspired me to follow art and go to an arts school. I remember some of the concept art for this game giving me chills, and I wasn't expecting that for a Disney game. It surprised me in a pleasant way. Though I do stand by something you also said: the gameplay was tricky at times. I never really felt bored with the paintbrush mechanic but the camera angles were very annoying at times. I didn't really bothered to buy the 2nd game since I didn't really had an X-Box, or a Playstation 3... or any console at all that could read the game XD, but I did look up gameplay and what the game was about. I liked it, but it was a big "meh" compared to the original one. I still think the 1st game was a big shot in the dark that actually worked pretty well for what it lasted! I don't know if I would call it epic but it was certainly a very interesting experience and take on this franchise usually targeted at young kids.
@@Agent-yw1kj Because those games suck. Basically it goes like No gameplay for 4 hours Make a choice Your choice didn't matter. Same junk happens Just watch a movie if you're gonna make a full length movie where you press a button.
This game was probably rich in story and animation because it's from Disney, so obviously they know what they're doing on that part. But the gameplay is STALE
JOHNNY TRICKSHOT I also liked his songs. I felt a bit uncomfortable due to them feeling out of place and unnecessary but overall fun. I really like Prescott’s fall.
"The 3DS game nobody talks about..." Doesn't talk about the 3DS game. Lol but nice video. I remember reading the game informer piece on the first one and being very interested in the idea. But gameplay didn't do it for me.
ClausMystery it is a little edgy to be completely fair. But it’s not too edgy as too take away the positives of the game. It’s a healthy amount of edgy!
ClausMystery do you? Understand what edgy means? The game doesn’t offend anyone it’s just surprisingly dark and gritty which especially considering it’s Disney is pretty edgy, and there’s literally nothing wrong with that Edgy =/= Offensive So how would being a ‘snowflake’ have anything to do with it?
I really like the paintbrush concept, the whole twisted, dystopian Disneyland aesthetic, and some of the level designs are super creative. Sadly, the gameplay was just... Meh, in my opinion.
Personally, I’d love to see an Epic Mickey world in Kingdom Hearts one day. Just imagine the possibilities that could be done with it. Tetsuya Nomura would definitely have a lot of fun with it.
I remember being excited for this game, getting it, trying to play it several times, and never getting past the 2nd or 3rd stage because it was just so vanilla
One of my personal favorite games, mainly because of the story and soundtrack. I really hope that remake you're talking about will reinvigorate this series.
A little more context on the Al Michaels-Oswald "trade"......Michaels was an announcer for Monday Night Football.....which aired on ABC....owned by Disney. They were going to move the game to ESPN, also owned by Disney....but since the NFL was shifting their showcase game from Monday to Sunday they also wanted their showcase guys. One being Michaels. So since NBC/Universal was going to get him anyway Disney decided to let him out of his contract early in exchange for several sports related products, but also Oswald
Since everyone is sharing facts guess I’ll share one: Disney only created the first game as a Wii exclusive because at the time, the Wii was the latest Nintendo console. And Disney didn’t want to develop a stunning game for PS3 and X360 and then have a watered down port for the Wii due to GPU limits. So they decided to just make a Wii exclusive so that the Wii wasn’t the bootleg version. In my opinion, that was a stupid decision for them to make but ig. I think Disney could’ve gone much farther with the game if they had developed it for the more powerful systems, especially with the soundtrack. (Btw, the soundtrack for the game is underrated.)
And with no nintendo developed games on the other consoles, Epic Mickey would have had a more barren market for child targeted games on the other consoles.
Treetops The target demographic was mostly kids. And 3D platforms are really popular for kids. And I as a kid, owned a PS3 since it’s launch. And I played a lot of 3D platformers on the PS3.

Ok I believe you.
That opening scene was terrifying as a kid.
It was my worst nightmare.
Good work!
butterlover21 it was Slot 1
I never had problems with the door closing
Its called the floatyard, since all broken and unused floats go there
Well they thought that a game called "Edgy Mickey" wouldn't sell as well
If this was made today it would be called "Based Mickey"
Is Epic Mickey Epic?
Me: *Looks at all the cool bosses, levels, characters, story, side quests, and graphics.*
Me: I see this as an absolute win
@6:47 I wouldn't say Oswald "defaced" the infamous statue of Walt, but made an improvement in his eyes.
Odd to say, but the relationship growth between Oswald and Mickey was my favorite aspect of the entire series
I agree. This might sound like a dumb comment, but I always thought that Disney should remake the first game into a Disney+ series.
Jesus Christ the memories. I had nightmares from the "It's a small world after all" bossfight. And the ending made me cry.
WHEN THEY PUT THEIR HANDS ON THE MIRROR YESSS 😭
I wanted to finish the game but I got stuck and rage quit
i remember being really freaked out by the clocktower as a kid. i was so freaked out by it i remember never finishing the game bc it scared me so much. i dont know if i could find the game modern day, but id pick it up again if i could. the game had an incredibly interesting gritty feel and i feel kind of bad about basically abandoning the game so quickly
@@IAMVOMITFOREVER that happened with me,too...I thought I was the only one who used to be scared of the clock tower
@@IAMVOMITFOREVER Same.
I really hope Disney does something else with Oswald, he looks so cool as a character and so expressive especially in the first Epic Mickey
He's getting his own series on Disney+ later
Literally the day after I watched this video, the remake was announced.
Mickey vowing revenge for Goofy’s death in kingdom hearts ran so epic Mickey could walk
I've never played Kingdom Hearts, so this comment hit me like a baseball bat to the head.
Call Me K I’m begging you to watch the cutscene of Goofy’s death. It’ll hit you like the boulder to his skull, it’s so iconic
@@Shoulderpads-mcgee Ok what the ever living *fuck* did I just watch. I have many questions, most of them I don't want answered. Is all of Kingdom Hearts like this, cause I kinda wanna watch more cutscenes with no context.
Call Me K kingdom hearts is wild! If you actually get into it, theres actual substance and really good emotional storytelling and characters but it’s coated like an m&m in batshit insanity. If you want to see more there are some good compilations in the “kingdom hearts with no context” genre and “this is why I can’t show kingdom hearts to my friends” is the name of a few other good videos that perfectly alienate clips
@@mynameskris as somebody who’s been desensitized by the garbage of kingdom hearts, its so jarring to remember that there are still people who don’t know about that
I absolutely love this review.

Is Epic Mickey edgy?
Answer: No. Next!
ClausMystery it is a little edgy to be completely fair. But it’s not too edgy as too take away the positives of the game. It’s a healthy amount of edgy!
Yes it is
@@mariobadia4553 No. You are just too much of a snowflake
ClausMystery do you? Understand what edgy means? The game doesn’t offend anyone it’s just surprisingly dark and gritty which especially considering it’s Disney is pretty edgy, and there’s literally nothing wrong with that
Edgy =/= Offensive
So how would being a ‘snowflake’ have anything to do with it?
Is it good? Hell yeah!
YES FINALLY HE ACKNOWLEDGES THIS GAME AND OSWALD
I really like the paintbrush concept, the whole twisted, dystopian Disneyland aesthetic, and some of the level designs are super creative. Sadly, the gameplay was just... Meh, in my opinion.
Personally, I’d love to see an Epic Mickey world in Kingdom Hearts one day. Just imagine the possibilities that could be done with it. Tetsuya Nomura would definitely have a lot of fun with it.
It’s nice now that at Disney world and land have some Oswald merchandise
I remember being excited for this game, getting it, trying to play it several times, and never getting past the 2nd or 3rd stage because it was just so vanilla
One of my personal favorite games, mainly because of the story and soundtrack. I really hope that remake you're talking about will reinvigorate this series.
Edgy Mickey as a concept makes sense if you’ve played Kingdom Hearts.
Oswald would fit right in Kingdom Hearts
A little more context on the Al Michaels-Oswald "trade"......Michaels was an announcer for Monday Night Football.....which aired on ABC....owned by Disney. They were going to move the game to ESPN, also owned by Disney....but since the NFL was shifting their showcase game from Monday to Sunday they also wanted their showcase guys. One being Michaels. So since NBC/Universal was going to get him anyway Disney decided to let him out of his contract early in exchange for several sports related products, but also Oswald
Everyone: mouse
Mark: mIcE
Unimation Egg, Mouse is singular whereas mice is plural, so if there’s a group of King Mickeys then it’d be called Kings Mice.
@@RoronoaZoro-ur6hr I think it's a reference to his accent. To Americans, it sounds as though, even in its singular form, he is saying "mickey mice."
Cory Moses what do you mean by “with no Nintendo developed games”
Grey Dragon It would work like how it works in the second game. You would use the right stick to aim the cursor around.
The audience for 3d platformers wasn't on the other systems.
Treetops The target demographic was mostly kids. And 3D platforms are really popular for kids. And I as a kid, owned a PS3 since it’s launch. And I played a lot of 3D platformers on the PS3.
