    Studies show that
    1) Even the confused, hormone-driven mind of a teenager can differentiate between fictional violence and real violence
    2) videogames cause no more aggression than watching sports or losing at chess

    • @lasody1766

Both can be wrong or right. A teenager can think it's fine to shoot because of a game (already happened) and video games can , again, cause a stronger reaction because of the immersion. They can also change someone for the better or cause less agression because there would be less stress than in a competition. It all depends on the game, and yes some types of games are more to blame than others.

Countries around the world simply need to learn civility in an online setting, just as much as they would school and better parenting.
Plus, both my parents were involved in what games I played and how I played them. When Fable 2 wasn't there to guilt trip me over killing animals senselessly in Skyrim, my dad was there to point that out with just an idle, off-hand comment. There's been (and probably still is) that major group of people who thought rock and roll was a gateway to satanism, and I vaguely remember there being a case in history where people had to deliberately say "Hey, stop romanticizing gangster movies making the gang life seem actually appealing". Video games / games in general are just the next progression of that cultural trend, which is why theres less focus on music and movies and all that jazz.

You could argue that women want to make it about them just as much, though. The issue, on it's own, is misrepresentation in media.
If you look at films and romantic comedies especially, you'll find the same level of hypersexualizaton and blatantly unrealistic male love interests as you do of females in video games. Men and women despise media for the same reason, yet you can't get both to agree that the opposite gender is represented that poorly.
Men want a mother and a counselor that will just fix them, while women want a father and a counselor that will just fix them.
The difference is that one is accepted while the other is not.

As a gamer mom who has been playing video games since I was a child (I think 1998), video games definitely do not cause sexism or violence. (I'll write a TL;DR version of my comment at the bottom)
Growing up, I mostly played Crash Bandicoot and T-rated fighting games (because my parents were smart enough to read the damn box); the big one for me was Tekken. A game that's nothing but violence but also had good female representation.
When I was approaching my tween years, I was able to play more mature games like Mortal Kombat and Blood+Rayne, and those games have badass women in it. One might give it flag because of the skimpy outfits but I never saw them as sexual; honestly, I thought they were wrestling/ninja costumes.
Which brings me to my final point: I never even knew representation was supposed to be a thing until two kinds of people brought it up.
    1) Women who never played video games and only saw games like GTA.
and 2) Men who have only played games that appeal to the male fantasy of saving the damsel in distress and being the hero.
The first one is very obvious why their arguments don't work so I won't waste time on them. The second one is also wrong for different reasons.
I want to be very clear: I'm not against men who play games with a weak female character they have to save as a reward. If that's your fantasy, more power to you; especially since dating sims for women basically do the same thing.
However, whenever the question "why are there no good female representation in games?" comes up, male gamers say it's because that's what the market calls for and this answer is both right and wrong.
It's right because most gamers are male, so if a company wants to make a quick buck they're going to pander to that and it's wrong because it makes it seem like that's all games have to offer.
There have been plenty of good female characters since the dawn of video games and some were even main characters that don't even show off their bodies. Have you guys not heard of Samus Aran?!
And even the ones that were played up as sexy, again, no one cared except for angry moms and horny teenagers/lonely men.
However, I do think a lot of sheltered men play these games for unhealthy reasons and don't even believe there are female gamers out there because the only women they know are the ones in games or their mothers who hate video games. So in a way, I can see why they think like that.
No joke, I once spent an hour trying to convince a guy online I was a girl but he never believed me no matter how much evidence I brought up. He just kept insisting that I was a little boy or a trans-woman. 🙄
    TL;DR
Female non-gamers and obsessed male gamers have different opinions but have the same mindset about video games and just need to make-out or something and leave everyone else alone.
And sorry if my comment was long, I really did try to keep it short while making a point as best as I could.

And assuming they DO exist, they wouldn't even be remotely involved in the outside world enough for people to care this much.
The idea that someone sitting in a room playing video games all day instead of getting a life could elicit a reaction more in-depth than a simple "what a virgin" is kind of ridiculous because they literally have nothing to do with you. Spending more than a couple minutes and a fraction of effort acknowledging their existence is arguably less productive - and ironically more obsessive - than even they are.

The rating system for games and movies, at least in America, is run by anonymous groups of parents who are all very inconsistent when it comes to rating the stuff. Sometimes sex scenes in movies? NC-17 rating. Other times, PG-13. Sometimes a game with weapons of cartoonish mass destruction get an E-10+ rating like Worms. Other times it gets skyrocketed up into M for some odd reason. Makes sense though, when you consider how much the feelings differ from suburban parent to suburban parent on what they are all right with their kids consuming.

"Growing up playing violent video games might make someone more insensitive to violence in the future"
I felt awful for killing a rat as part of pest control, and for the next two days, whenever I saw a rat in anything, media or pictures, I thought of *that* rat.
Grew up watching and playing violent video games.
There are absolutely going to be exceptions to my results, but I imagine this is about the average. You're not just going to feel nothing when you see a dead animal or person, or have an extremely muted reaction to it.

I think that the "violence" is actually caused by the extra immersion. You can associate more with a game than with a book, and so your brain behaves in that context. Said context can't really affect you because even the worst a game can go can make you unhappy for like a couple hours and then it's all ok. So, since the brain is acting in a context where there are no real consequences, people are more rude with their immediate reactions, because their brains "don't switch back" to the irl context. Although, this can also be said for social media, so it's more of an approach problem rather than a "videogames = violence"

  • @natetheaverage5270

The problem isn't violent video games, it's people who think anyone who plays one will try to do whatever is done in the game.

    1) "Videogames cause violence" -> * open any serious Hystory book * -> Nope.
    2) "Videogames are violent" -> there are a lot of non-violent games, so no, not inherently
    3) "Violent people are the one consuming violent games" -> Just Catharsis. Even if true (it's not) it shelters violent people indoors, where they can't really hurt anyone, so they are a good thing overall.
    4) "Many videogames over-sexualize women" -> They are a product, and sex sells, this is a well-known fact. Blame society for it.
    5) "Gamers get defensive when videogames are criticized" -> passionate people get defensive when their passion is criticized.

@@lyonsin2535 America has a deep-rooted cultural obsession with social media, which glorifies vanity and fleeting moments of fame, leading impressionable young people to act out, recreating dangerous fads in the pursuit of their spotlight.
This also applies to mass shooters, as they oftentimes simply want to feel that their life means something, so they use our obsession with media against us, knowing news programs and other outlets will be covering the story, which they believe will give them some semblance of control in their lives.
Only the extremely mentally-ill or stupid would ever be inspired to violence by a videogame.

I don't think videogames causes people to be violent, but they make people find out how much violent they can be, when I was younger I used to rage a LOT when playing video games, yet my parents did not take them away from me, they complained about my behavior while playing, I was ashamed of myself and now I'm a LOT more chill, yet, while playing or not, I can get VERY violent, but that's not because of games, that's because that's who I am, videogames did not make me violent, they made me know how much violent I can get.
And yeah, some parent should just try and teach their kids, having something restricted from you makes you want it more, then you get those room goblins never leaving, and having their lives being all videogames (there can be exceptions)
I do not only play videogames because is all I ever seen I have, but because is all my parents made me have, I could never go outside because my parents were scared something bad could happen, and developed a fear to the outside and strangers, making me almost unable to buy something from an old lady outside school even if I was starving, I do not blame my parents, because they wanted me to be safe, and slowly I'm getting used to the outside world, if you dont want your kids to only be able to play videogames, then instead of just complaining or taking them away, SHOW them what else there is to this world.

I feel like it depends on the piece of media, who made it, and what they are trying to say. Violet, sexist, homophobic (basically volkeh.) people tend to make media that might teach those bad values which in turn harms people. But if it’s something harmless like stardew valley or Mario Kart than it’s perfectly fine. Violent people cause media that causes violence. There is also a degree of bad parenting involved.
