Grobel explained how he became the lucky journalist to get the Patty Hearst interview for Playboy after she had served two years in prison before President Jimmy Carter commuted her sentence:
“Patty Hearst is coming with her husband for breakfast to the mansion,” Christie Hefner told me over the phone. “Why don’t you join us?”
“You mean to see if she’d agree to do the Interview?” I asked. I had done several Playboyinterviews by then, including marathon sessions with two highly elusive stars, Barbra Streisand and Marlon Brando

From hours of exclusive interview tapes, we honed in on the idea of "reasonable doubt" and Hearst's unsuccessful claim that she was brainwashed by her captors, the Symbionese Liberation Army (SLA), and forced to join their wild ride of bank robbery and crime. Hearst says the SLA told her she would be killed if she didn't pledge allegiance to their radical cause.

I liked the fact that you guys put in an explanation for some people who may not know who the person is. You oughtta do that more often. :D
This all too brief segment shined a brighter light on the complexities of Patty Hearst's ordeal than all the books, movies and documentaries combined. Please do a part two.

Does Toobin talk about how her weight plummented to less than 90 pounds while she was with these lunatics? Does he talk about how her physical and mental evaluations showed that her IQ had dropped from 130 to 109? Does he talk about the physical stress that precipitated her lung to collapse not long after she was caught? Of coarse he doesn't. According to him she was enjoying herself.
This isn't Toobin interviewing her but nope, he doesn't. I was so irritated reading his description of her rapes: "By modern standards of consent, it is difficult to see how Patty could have willingly consented to sex with Wolfe and Defreeze." So I added, "BUT HE'LL TRY" in ballpoint pen even though it was a library book.

I wasn't really sure who Patty Hearst was before I watched this (I knew her name from an Ice Cube lyric). In terms of drawings I think it's the most interesting one yet.
I read her memoir "Every Secret Thing". I was 12 when she was kidnapped. I remember it.
@rottiefan I read that book too - I was struck by how much warmth and genuine affection Hearst felt for Wendy Yoshimura who had nothing to do with her kidnapping - she and the Harris's hooked up with her later. Wendy saw how Patty was bullied by the surviving members of the SLA and did a lot to liberate her from them, if you'll pardon the pun.
Definitely one production that feels like it'd be incredibly engaging either as is or with the original interview at the Newseum in DC

I hope you didn't try . You'd never see it again . She might have signed it many years ago but she's got a massive chip on her shoulder about it these days. It's a shame. John Waters once said she had a wonderful sense of humour back in the '90s and it comes through in Serial Mom - her comic timing was great!

As a teen I could not believe what a circus her trial was. How ignorant & bias I thought they all were to even THINK she was guilty.

I think the scene with the baby disappearing from her arms when she talks about wishing things had never happened was a poor choice by the animator and a really low blow in a way.

I shot my first deer and learned I am more of a fisherman than a hunter. She was given a gun for the robberies, was she given bullets? She doesn't even try to stop anything.
She still seems like she is in denial of what she actually did, some of her crimes are on camera and she acts like she should be absolved of her actions.

The interview would have been entertaining/interesting enough. I really didn't need the cartoon.
I think "reasonable doubt" ended at the point where they gave her an automatic weapon and she still went through with it instead of saying "oh there's the cops thank God I'm going now, thanks for letting me defend myself from my rapists" or just, y'know, gunning them all down herself. And yeah. I'm speaking as a rape victim.

I agree she falls into the "shade of grey" category. Yes she was kidnapped against her will, shut in a closet for 57 days, raped, terrorized - she had no choice but to participate in that famous bank robbery but how do you explain her actions after that? All but two of her captors were killed in LA 3 months after her kidnapping - she fired over 40 rounds from a submachine gun at a sporting goods store (miraculously killing no-one), held two men hostage along with the Harris's and drove the getaway car in another bank robbery where an innocent woman was killed. And that didn't stop her making bombs to kill police - she even planted one herself (the fact that it was a dud was no thanks to her). She wasn't even living with her two surviving kidnappers at the time of her arrest. All this does set her apart from other famous victims of Stockholm Syndrome - Shaun Hawnbeck, Elizabeth Smart, Jaycee Dugard, Steven Stayner et al. But who knows what was really going through her mind? One of her captors, Bill Harris, said "We saw Patricia as the exception to all rules." As unlikable as Harris is, I think there's some truth in this. She is a genuine enigma.
so, he's not interviewing her. he's just here to argue with her. Gosh. How helpful. And I'm sure he's very well qualified to judge her or he wouldn't do it. Thanks for your help guy. Stupid Patty Hearst. What would she know?
4:40 and that is the moment she was convicted. If there was never, ever ever a thought of "kill or be killed", then how can she say she was threatened with death if she didn't comply? I would like to see the camera footage of her in the bank, because the look on her face will tell you all you need to know.
that interviewer was mad disrespectful
1) firstly after everything she'd been through, he said she's "too frail to take a punch in the face"
2) then when she was explaining her condition with advanced academic words he interrupted her with "who told you this?" when she clearly did research herself
3) then he dramatically overstated how the robbery went down even though she hadn't killed or even WANTED

I know this was recorded in the '80s but i honestly wouldn't have even humored him with an interview
He wasn't referring to the bank robbery. He was talking about when she was alone in a van and fired two guns at a sporting goods store to rescue two of her captors from being arrested. She fired 40 rounds using a submachine gun. There's footage showing bullet holes she fired through the window of the store. I don't think she WANTED to kill anyone but it's close to miraculous that nobody was hurt. The owner of the store later sued her, claiming he was suffering PTSD as a result of the shooting.
Idk if this was a dude I probably wouldn’t have been pardoned and had a longer sentence. There is a level of Stockholm but at some point with the stuff she did and said there needs to be accountability. Which she got I think. But man just listen to her eulogy. The way she defends herself at the shooting at Mel’s Idk man
This is fascinating, but it still doesn't seem real to her. If she was was poor or in the Black Panthers she would have been gunned down.
