I always find the Ed Vs Troy argument weird. Even though Troy said in an interview that Ed was the Greatest Safety of All Time. I still don’t understand why anyone ever compares the 2. One is a Free Safety and the other is a Strong Safety. Even though they’re both Safeties, They are very different positions in Every way.

People would say after one of his AMAZING plays, “He came out of nowhere”!! But Ed will tell you if asked, he NEVER simply “came out of nowhere”, but rather film study taught him where to be on certain looks from an offense.

I bet there are a million stories of athletes who were so supremely gifted but they got exposed at the elite levels because they failed to do the small things in order to win. Ed Reed, Kobe, Jordan, Brady, Ali and all the true greats didn’t get to where they’re at on athleticism alone. It takes a great mind for their craft and a willingness to work and study.

Best overall safety in history. There are some that were better at runs support and others who had more interceptions. But nobody could do things like he could. Just put on a tape and watch his instincts on some of the plays he made. It’s unreal. I saw him go from one side of the field to the other before the quarterback even turned His head and shoulders and threw the ball and Reed was right there to intercept it. Plus, he’s the only person in history the score a touchdown on an interception return, a punt return, and blocking a punt and returning it for a touchdown. He’s also the all-time leader and interception return yards.

What he said is really not much different to what you see in every day life outside of NFL. Many people go about their jobs and lives with a more or less lackluster and lackadaisical attitude. And therefore you have a huge variety of outcomes given the same opportunities. It all simply comes down to the individual. Ed was and is someone who gets down to business when it's time to do so. And he recognizes the value in being proactive and having a serious work ethic.

Maybe notes worked for reed, but doesn't mean it will work for all.... also, the ravens had a top ranked defense pretty much through all of reed's entire career. Sounds to me like his teammates found a way to figure it out without notes.

People take for granted the act of writing. I heard a few times in school that the brain doesn't retain most of what you see/hear in a lecture. Of that, much is forgotten within an hour, day, and week. The act of writing not only records the information presented but also engages many other parts of the brain and helps remember more. Even more so than just typing or taking a picture. I don't know how much scientific evidence is out to prove percentages of info retained, but to this day, I write important stuff down.
So yeah, if I was a high IQ football player and knew most info was lost in a week (you know the time up to the next NFL game), I'd be pissed too seeing other players taking it for granted that they should have notes. Especially if one person's foul up can alter the success of the team and potentially money.
