I think the idea with the ooze ball is that it will not be stable and if you roll it on a flat surface (like a hardwood floor), it will cause it to go in random directions.
The nicest was seeing you doing what you do best again - a thoroughly detailed, cordial and impartial review - a great communicator well-worth watching. (I also like the hunts, cons and niche-celeb stuff, but THIS is why I follow you. Top notch.)
I’m hyped for this one seeing I have almost all of the figures from this line. Though with the rereleases of the original figures and vehicles, I wanna see them bring back the OG sewer lair and the Technodrome.
For the zip line just wrap the string around the subway light pole a couple more times to make the line more taut. The ooze ball looks like it would sit in the funnel perfectly so you could fill it with ooze then put it upside down on the funnel to let it flow.
I got the notification for this video and im like omg yes hes reviewing it and ever since i was a kid in 2012 ive been watching pixel dan tmnt video's because i know he will provide the best info so thanks pixel dan for making the best tmnt videos on UA-cam in my opinion of course
Thoughts about the plastic: 1. Plastic for a lot of toys does seem lighter and more flexible which can be good for assembly but bad for holding together 2. Saves on shipping cost being lighter 3. Plastic now is more likely to have recycled elements 4. Might be different to lower production cost. A Snake Mountain it might not be but might still be fun!
This really does look like a lot of fun and I agree with how awkward the cardboard backdrop looks with all the villains on it. Sometimes designers get a little too into their own heads about what a toy should look like on its own and not enough about how it'll actually look when played with. But I just got Origins Snake Mountain in the mail and there's that poll for the new MOTU crowdfund so I'm in a playset kind of mood right now, this still looks like a lot of fun!
i remember when i was a kid watching your 2012 TMNT videos and playing with those figures. Now seeing the next new era of TMNT is kinda weird i miss being a kid.
I'm picking nits right with you on that cardboard backdrop. It does ruin the pretend play a bit to have a static image of Superfly and others on there and then add the figures to it, even though the artwork is really nice. Would be really awesome if they made the backdrop two-sided or enclosed alternates or something. Or maybe some static stickers of them so I can modify the background on my own without damaging anything.
Playsets once so many and now so rare. Great review there Pixel Dan, bring up and going into all the little things. A lot of people appreciate a reviews like yours.
Couple things. 1. With The Ooze ball the idea is to leave the stopper off and the ooze is the. Supposed to ooze out onto the villians after being rolled down the tracks (I havent been able to get it too ooze out in that fashion but thats the idea. 2. The Subway folds up and slots i to the grooves of lowered section next to the ooze pipe. 3. On the Portaloo theres pegs for the baby turtles, I assume this is so that ooze can be dumpped and ooze down the grates. While I agree there are a number of play features that just dont work as it should, this is a fantastic set and has become a centre piece to my collections. I absolutely love this line and despite being aimed for kids is something Ive loved collecting.
I hear you can connect the vintage one with this new one through the green pipes, the exact way you show on 20:55, just connect the pipe to the hole behind that ladder on the new one
I can appreciate that big playsets aren't common anymore, but they're making it big while stretching the build budget thin. And large portions of cardboard and very flimsy plastic aren't signs of quality.
Finally! I've been waiting for you to review the sewer lair for a while now! Another great video as usual, Dan! Also, the tabs on the subway station are to move it closer in to the sewer lair. There are holes in the gym area by the ooze pipe, and it can peg in there.
i wish Godzilla x Kong had a great playset like this and not fully cardboard. although im not the biggest fan of having chracters baked into the background of stuff like this, now you have 2 superflys if you already have the figure
I think I have the 2012 set? It was on post-holiday clearance at Walmart a few years later, I believe? It was after I moved in 2015. I saw this one the other day, probably at Target? It barely registered other than, “oh, that’s out? Neat.” And I didn’t look at it further. This one, I agree the added mutants detracts from the setting, and without them it could be a great generic setting for a variety of lines. Or general ACBA fun. I’m sure a few decent artists could paint over the mutants, or create a new backdrop instead? I can already see the porta-potty getting painted blue, and a Superman checking out the phone booth. 😂 I might give this a second chance. IF I had any room, anymore. 😭
The truth is that it is a very good playset, but I prefer the vintage Playmates playset and the one from 2012 for me they are the best, but that Party Wagon fire pizza 🍕 Van is great 😁, greetings 👍🏻👋🏻🇦🇷
Great review! $80 is a decent price but they should have pushed it to $99 and given us some better plastic. It drives me crazy when they engineer all these features but they don’t work due to poor materials.
It looks big because it looks more to scale with the figures. That's actually a good thing. I've always loved the original playset from the first toy line. I have the technodrome from the Michael Bay Out of the Shadows movie. I wish I had bought the sewer lair playset too. I like the van can be pushed through an area of it. Maybe the ooz creates a weight in the ball to make it continue rolling?
Kid me would use the chandelier as a Shell-e-bro for Donny to scan the city for new pizza joints and crime to fight. Surprised there wasn’t/isn’t already an X Men Turtles mash up wave.
The subway section slides over the left side of the playset. Where the blanket is on the sticker on the floor so that the subway entrance is sort of flush with the street near the payphone.
The ooze inside the ball is probably a way to keep the ball bottom heavy and concentrate its weight bellow so it has an easier way to stay on the train tracks.
I think it's also supposed to be visual where the entire ball is supposed to represent "ooze" and the interior slime is just for movement/looks/to add a play feature.
I get the feeling the payphone periscope was included just for us who remember what a payphone is. I had so much from TMNT growing up. Maybe when I'm done collecting MOTU I'll start collecting TMNT again just to keep in line with my childhood collecting habits.
We all agree about the backdrop … this set could be used for other figure lines too but it’s so specific to tmnt it’s maybe not as appealing to all buyers..THAT SAID! The set is maybe better than the original in many ways. AMAZINGLY COOL! I want it!…maybe someone will custom make a new backdrop!
When I was 10 years old when the first turtles came out I used a jump rope to used a zip line i use Mike and Don cause there easy to used the zipline its there weapons all the time
I like the new playset, I got the pleasure of viewing it early with my son before the release and by his reaction alone, this has shot up into the top 2 for me. (Can't beat vintage for me) For a six year old i think this will go down into his memory as something he will want when he's 35! ❤ he loved it.
Thanks Pixel Dan for this great review and sharing with us this awesome playset, I'm not a 100% TMNT fan but i like it specially the vintage ones, blessings! 🤘
Hmm... I didn't have that issue with the elevator. It is a bit wobbly, but it will lock into place when I move it up. The stairs worked fine for me too. There does have to be some decent weight on the top, though. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't the softer plastic making the tolerances inexact
So I'm just guessing that if when you put the slime in the ball it's used as a counter weight knock down the bad guys. As for the open peg holes on the subway section that tells me as a HUGE TOY FAN COLLECTOR AND ALSO SRUDY LOTS OF OLD TOYS AND PLAY SETS AS WELL that they might end up coming out with more players to connect to the subway to add more sewer sections and top level city sections kinda like what Mattel has done for the new he man playset castle greyskull but awesome video and presentation of this turtles play set Dan good job on being picking on everything people need too know what they are buying so no kid ends up being disappointed peace bless you all have a good one
The original 80s one is still the best. Being able to connect it to the Technodrome is a feature that no other playset has been able to match. There is also way too much cardboard used on the modern versions.
Nice, but I'm pretty much sticking with the 2012 one. It works really well with my other lines... despite the plastic starting to warp a bit. 😅 I am wondering if the same can be said about the new one.
I’m always leery of what’s happening with the plastics in 80% of modern toys, from mass produced stuff like this set to toys from Dollar Tree’s action figures, quality of plastic seems all over the place. I don’t know if it’s EPA standards, cost cutting for more profit, or just lack of longevity of product life since most companies know that many of these toys are destined for adult collectors that just assemble and display them and rarely touch them again. I’ve collected some off brand or rack toy items that are made from plastic so durable it would make an N64 gasp. Specifically what comes to mind is a Robo Dino line from Dollar General that is made like 80s level quality.
I’ve been very curious about this play set. That’s a shame to hear about the quality of the plastic (though not at all surprising). Still, it looks really great and like something that my 3-year-old would probably love to play with as he gets a bit older! I haven’t seen it yet, but I don’t get to do Target runs very often! Might have to check pretty soon, although this is a pretty massive set which there really isn’t much room for at the moment. This is shaping up to be a fairly decent line and we’re only in the first wave!
till now i really love the 2012 sewer lair ,this one looks good a must have would have been cool if it came with the crazy color effects like the movie
Is the slime ball a very light when it’s empty? I’d think that maybe the ooze is meant to increase the weight so it’s more likely to knock over the villains
Can you please tell me is this the first release one or the second please I’m trying to find the item number down the corner of the box of the new one I’m told the difference with the new one to old is plastic surround instead of all cardboard I’m trying to look for the item number of the new one
I wonder if getting one of these on the cheap (resale) does anyone think the accessories would scale well with the original G1 sewer set ? I found one of these for $30 perhaps missing a few bits, but I thought it would be cool to use the weight bench, the portopottie , etc. Just hoping it would scale ok !
I don't have the playset, but i had the 2012 set and i used to dump the ooze done the chute so it's always fun to see that feature come back. Speaking of the ooze, i picked up 2 canisters and they feel just like the ooze from 2012, not only that, but it also felt like the ooze from the 2007 mutation figures. A part of me thinks that they never changed their "recipe" for the ooze

The telephone/periscope 👍
The new portapotty elevator and the basketball hoop
