Straczynski pulled off a Herculean feat. So many episodes were written by him.

If I'm not mistaken, nearly 100 of the 110 episodes were written by him, those that weren't were written by great sci-fi show writers such as Peter David, Neil Gaiman, Kathryn M. Drennan, Lawrence G. DiTillio, D. C. Fontana, and David Gerrold. The last two having written scripts for Star Trek.

This is one of those shows I wish I had watched as it aired. When I actually did watch it about two years ago, I was blown away by just how good it was. The low budgets don't take away from how entertaining and engaging the characters were. A fantastic series I'm glad I was finally able to watch.

My cousin got me into Babylon 5. He was a little older than me and I struggled to follow it at first. When the series was re-run on TV a few years later I really started to enjoy it. Fantastic weekly stories and a great arc. While most long shows had an arc of some kind these were still so many small clues throughout the standalone episodes. So many great performances and chemistry between the cast.

I loved this show in the 90’s.

The fun part is B5 had plenty of episodes which appeared to be classic episodic type episodes with the main plot of the episode getting neatly wrapped up by the end of the episode. However, if you pay attention, its those little details and sub plots in the background which further the overall serial main plot or help flesh-out the world and characters.

This was a great show that ended too soon.

When it started, B5 had a much better following in the UK (and possibly Europe as a whole), than in the US.
At one point, I think episodes were airing in the UK slightly ahead of the US, and when the team attended their first UK Con, there were fans queuing out the door and down the street.
I think JMS was especially surprised and touched by this, since was a fan of several British Scifi shows, including The Prisoner, Doctor Who and Blakes 7 (which also used continuous storytelling to some extent).

B5 doing serialized storytelling helped create the modern era. Growing up I hated that everything on Star Trek would reset back to square one every episode. The Enterprise gets nearly destroyed and three major characters almost die in a traumatic event? No biggie, one episode later and all is well. Ugh. I remember being completely blown away by In The Beginning, which paid off dangling plot threads amazingly well....Sinclair is Valen??! Holy crap!

The reimagined Battlestar Galactica (and every other sci-fi series with an long story arc like The Expanse) owes its existence to the success of Babylon 5.

Professional editing, well spoken. Good audio. Well done! Great show too. Subbed, let's see where you take it!

Love this show. My understanding is the reason why no Blu Ray disks were produce was because original videos of the shows were no longer around. They were lost or wiped clean from the computers. The only format available is your basic DVD set.

Incorrect; this is available on Blu-ray. As of the time of this comment the Complete Series is still available on Amazon in BluRay format. The issue, and the reason the BluRays are only in 4:3 format rather than widescreen, is that they did not keep the original CGI files so it was impossible for them to re-render the space and other CGI scenes in widescreen for a high quality Blu-ray release. The other option would have been for Warner Brothers to have the CGI redone like Paramount did with Star Trek, but they decided to take the easier (and cheaper) option and use the 4:3 CGI broadcast back in the day.

@@rssrover3396 Then that's new. My understanding is that there's no Blu-Ray format. Good to know.

The third movie tnt commissioned was B5 a call to arms. This would be a pilot for Crusade. That show ended too soon. Only 13 episodes. TNT proved problematic with JMS' vision of a series set after B5's final season and before the series finale.

I think the 3rd movie was River of Souls, with Ian McShane starring in it, maybe it was the 4th, I always think of it as the 3rd and then watch Call to Arms and Crusade straight after.

@jdmarx28 it's a guilty pleasure for me, it's one of the few things I actually like Ian mcshane in and I think it was a cool premise.
I also like it for being it's own standalone thing, a bit like what a season 6 of b5 would have been like with all the new cast members that waved to sheridan and delenn when they left the station for the last time.
The humour around the holo brothel and with the lawyer was good too.

JMS said that he was at a comic con at a meet and greet just after season 1 had broadcast, and a woman came up to him and basically told him the story arc

B5 showed that a story taking placed within a fixed environment like a space station was possible.
