    It still makes me smile so much when I think of my old FS1E. It was a pre restricted model in "Candy Tone Gold". At 16 I was riding around on an old Honda P50 moped but fell in love with my mates FS1E. It was about 7 years old and a bit knocked about but I saved up my pocket money and persuaded him to sell it. I paid about £90 for it and spent 3 months completely re-building it. After the re-bore it would manage about 60mph (down hill, the wind behind you and chin on the bars) It was a crazy machine - the smoke, the smell and that crazy sound, what was not to love.

      Thank you for the comment :) there's a lot of appeal to the old fizzies! 60 is a respectable top speed! Thanks for watching

    Brings back so many memories of when I was 16 back in the 70s, me and my mates riding everywhere flat on our fizzys, those engines where almost unburstable. Great vid and narration, look after the old girl, she's a credit to you.

    Just gone back 44 years, left school was earning £14.00 per week and bought my yellow fizzy new on hp at a local bike shop, got bike home before my provisional licence had arrived so there I was looking at this beautiful machine sitting in our front room through lounge so talked my mum into allowing me to start her up and get used to operating clutch etc !! smoked out house and ruffled up carpet, fantastic, I was only 16! great memories, take care friend

      Very nice! I was also able to talk my mum into letting me have the fizzy in the house for a few months (until I started using it and the smell of 2 stroke and fuel began to get a bit much for her!) Brilliant that your mum let you start yours in the house!! 😂 thanks for watching pal!

      I had 4 of them and tuned them to 130 km/h full crank light selfmade piston. all ballanced till 14k rpm and had a 12.5 hp. many cil. tuned but one was the best. many battles with Zündapp and Kreidler all won. it was an amazing time! And the Fs1 was in my eyes and experiAnce the best!

      Indeed I do, still have an RD200 CS5, RD400c and a 1980 Bonneville. I may be wrong here but £299 seems to ring a bell when we were selling them, RD400 and Suzuki GT380 were in the mid 400 to 500 pound bracket.I remember in 1977 selling a Suzuki kettle for £999.

    Nice one! Nicely narrated and put together video of the iconic Fizzy! I still have SUCH fond memories of my fizzy and the freedom it gave me.... until it rained... As an aspiring engineer, I tried every type of Spark Plug Cap and sealing arrangement, but if it rained I knew I was pushing it home most of the way. My FS1E managed 60mph on the A406 coming back from southend, it was a lovely bike and never once let me down in the year I had it when I was 16. I have had a few bikes since and own a GSX-R now, but it really is the one bike that I miss the most. I have a 1966 twin cylinder version similar to this Fizzy which is the 100cc YL1 Twinjet, also a 2-stroke. I restored it to showroom condition. It is so much fun to ride and a little screamer. It uses the Autolube lubrication system which is better than premix fuel. Very rare now they are much sought after and worth a fortune in top condition.

    Just found your post! The FS1-E was an icon, an incredibly reliable piece of engineering. Like loads of my generation I had a FS1-E at 16 and it provided fun and freedom. We all worked on ours to get the maximum performance out of them. Daily use was probably easier then as all filling stations had two-stroke oil dispensers where you set the mixture and put it straight into the tank. Fabulous!

    Bought my 1977 fizzy at 13 in 78. It was the last of the unrestricted. She was suped up with skimmed head, 60cc kit higher gearing , expansion chamber and ported. She would do a shade over 60 in the right conditions. I have been riding ever since, plus doing track days, off road riding and much more.She would size up regularly after the thrashing it always got. My current bike is a BMW S1000XR, great bike, but as much fun as a fizzy at 16. NEVER. Best riding of my life on my smoky moped out with friends. Enjoy your little beauty , stay safe and have a good biking life. You have made a great choice of bike to start it on.

      I've heard that with minimal work, you can get a lot more out of these bikes, but at the poor old things age I wouldn't want to now. Would have been awesome to have had one in the 70s where parts were cheap and readily available! I bet yours went like a rocket! The fizzy will always be a fond memory for owners, it's just got that character, hasn't it! Thank you for watching, and thank you for leaving a comment :) ride safe mate!

      +2Stroke Squashie try sticking a 15 tooth front sprocket on it instead of standard 14. It will make the the acceleration slightly less and the gap between 3rd and 4th slightly bigger but I much preferred the easier crushing top speed. This is the easiest difference you can make without overtaxing the engine. Give it a go if you fancy, it's easy to do.

    I can't express what a brilliant day you've given me after watching your post about a dozen times. I have spent the afternoon looking up and researching everything FS1E and finding pictures of the model I owned. It was in fact a 1970 ish "SS" badged model "Sixteener Special" that came out just before Honda who had the SS50 at the time, made them change the name to FS1E. I am now 57 so I would have had it in '76. I cannot express what a big deal these bikes were at that time. Both Honda and Suzuki had similar models at that time but nothing had the performance of the early Yams or such a cult following. Your bike looks in amazing condition and if you still have it - Don't sell it! I know the temptation is to trade up but you have a real classic. Save up and buy another bike by all means but that little gem is a keeper - something to pass on to your own kid someday and a valuable collectors piece.

      Peter Sobocki thankyou for the kind words! Im glad you enjoyed my video :) I have plenty on here if you feel like having a look! Yes, the Yamaha SS was before the Honda, I believe there are also rumours about it being changed because of the war (Nazi) connotations. I had an AP before this, but it didnt have pedals so I wouldnt have been able to ride it when I turned 16. sold to buy this beaut. Think the AP was quicker though, but the Fizzy was the original! thats not actually correct. Honda brought out the SS50 around 1969. Yamaha brought out the Fs1 in 1970 but the 'ss' version wasnt until 1972. it ran for a few months before Honda had them change it

      @@2StrokeSquashie currently converting it to 12v using some cheap circuits and led bulbs from China. Easy really when you finally understand the wiring diagram and modus operandi of the various bits and switches! I always thought the fs1e had 'autolube' lubrication system? Where the 2 stroke oil was pumped directly to the cylinder wall and main bearing (Suzuki had 'posi-force' which is same). SS50 is slow compared with 2 stroke, despite having 6hp at 11,000 rpm. I too was tempted at making a YB100/FS1EDX crossover as I thought they shared the same frame - though I never got any further than hotting up my DX back in the day - it did manage to do 50 two-up and I did once pass my mate on his Superdream at 70, or so he reckoned (I'd've said 60 tops but I was tucked down behind the fairing and semi-prone...)

    • @2StrokeSquashie
      @2StrokeSquashie  8 років тому

      I think the YB frames are actually a bit bigger., but the engines are obviously quite a bit faster. To get 60 out of a fizzy is still pretty good though! The superdreams are nice, but 4 strokes werent as quick! What cc was it?

    • @paultreneary
      @paultreneary 8 років тому

      His was a 250. Mine was a whole 1 cc over and with pegs not pedals - I was trying for a full m/bike licence before progressing up to an RD400 (in the same colours Yellow with B/W banding). I'd polished the ports etc; kept the stock pipe (decoked regularly with baffles but no wadding); upped the gearing at the front by 1 tooth; gold/palladium(?) plug and set it up with depth gauge/Avo - it was quick (for a moped!) and revved freely into 5 figures judging by the gearing/speed (and whine), that is until the siezures - 5 in a day before it went solid on me and I had to push...
      Re YB100 - I think the wheels were an inch bigger if I recall

    • @2StrokeSquashie
      @2StrokeSquashie  8 років тому

      +paul treneary them 250s look good, but arent very quick! You done a lot more to yours than I dare do with mine then! The beauty with the 2 strokes is how easy they are to tinker with. The problem is with parts getting rarer I darent go too mad incase I break it! lol. The rd400s are amazing bikes, very expensive now though, and the 250s are getting there. Did you not fancy an LC at the time?

    i left secondary school, in that hot summer we had back in 1976; and most of us had mopeds back then.
    A mate of mine who lived in the same area, bought a Suzuki AP 50. Another great, nice looking moped.
    There was a garage down the road, that sold Suzuki bikes only…… and my mate and i went down to have a look at this AP50. They had quite a few there; and they only cost £50. i really wanted one too; but ended up with a Honda SS 50.
    i never actually choose to buy this moped. My dad saw an ad in the echo; and we went along to have a look at it. But never had much choice really….but to buy it. These were nice looking bikes. But they were very sluggish; had a 4 stroke engine. and only had a top speed of 40MPH. And also the handlebars were NOT cross bar. The handlebars on the Honda SS50 looked pretty awful. But my mate did eventually let me have a ride on his Suzuki AP50, Just to see what it was like; as apposed to mine. And it was really fast; i really loved it…. Having a top speed at 50MPH. same as your Yamaha FS1E.
    The handlebars that i liked, were the cross bar type. The Suzuki AP50 never had a cross bar; as seen on your restored Yamaha FS1E. But i did also….eventually have a ride on the FS1E. and that was really great too. All of these mopeds sounded different. And all of them were pretty reliable.
    This particular moped FS1E. that i had a ride on…. had a hydraulic disc brake on the front wheel. Most probably came out in 1976.
    But they were really great bikes to ride….. and would very much love to have a ride on one again! but unfortunately i don’t have a full drivers license.
    i recently found out that you can, still ride a moped on the road;; up to a 125cc…. as long as you have a provisional license. But there is a catch. You have to book a riding course with an instructor; just to prove that you are safe to ride on the road. But you don’t have to take a test. He will then just issue you with a certificate. This only lasts for 2 years.

    I've just come across this and it takes me back to mine, change the metal plug cap to plastic and put a mud flap on and that stops the cutting out in the rain, I had the standard exhaust took the wadding off the baffles drilled extra holes to get rid of the gasses quicker, moved the needle up in the carb to let more fuel through and got rid of the tick over adjuster rod, dumped the standard air filter and used a pair of my mums tights to let more air in, I used to get partial seizures due to a carbon build up in the gap between the barrel and the head so i just polished the head to a mirror finish and binned the copper head gasket and ran it without; no torque wrench just tightened by feel. I could just scrape 69mph on the flat with a long enough road but that was only after I painted it Black.

    yeh hi there my name is lee im 51 years old just seen your video of your fab looking fizzy i have come to your sight because i actually owned a purple fizzy just like yours. back in 1982 my reg number was kpf 211p and i used to ride around woking and guildford areas back in the day i was in a gang there was 15 of us. some of my mates rode ap 50s or dt 50 trials and even puch maxis. suzuki"s were popular as well. the ap 50;s i mean we went everywhere even down to brighton one bank holiday in may 82. loads of punk rockers started a fight with us. mind you there was 20 of us that went one of my mates had his moterbike licence. and he want on his x5 200 suzi my brother went on the back of one of my mates fizzys because he had a car licence he could go pillion in them days you could do that my brother was only 19 back.then we were all 16 to 18 years old. i always remember that day in brighton we had to be escorted out of the town so we didn;t start a punch up with 30 or so gang of punks and skinheads who were after us.thats what it was like back then everything was a big event. we all used to meet up at our local youth club in woking our bikes all lined up together we raced each other frequently took some risks but great memories if i had a tardis i would go back tomorrow if i could. but sadly can't do that trying to trace my old bike haven't had no luck? i know i have written loads here. but i hope you can enjoy my story of me and my little fizzy miss the old girl if she is still out there if anybody has any info about my old fizzy i would love to hear from you many thanks hope you enjoyed my memories of my youth. lee d

Should I just add the typical oil/additive ( because I've read people disconnect the yamalube).

      +Scott Nicholson unless you have a burning passion for them and know your way around an engine, honestly dont bother. You would be better with a cheaper modern 4 stroke. These are getting all the more collectible, even since I've had mine, and prices are silly now. You'd only get one on ebay, and older ones are commanding the best part of 5 grand.
      My only other advice if you do want something like this is to check out Yamahas YB100. It looks almost identical to the fizzy, but with more ccs you get around better and they arent yet as collectible/nowhere near as expensive. Its possible to get change from £1000 for one in good condition. If you look for one from 1982 onwards, they tick most of the boxes. Hope this helps? :)

    I hate to be pedantic but I think the popsicle purple version was only available on the later fizzies from about 1974-75. If yours is a '73 it technically should be the gold colour.

    Did they ever produce the FS1e with Autolube or was it always a 'mix oil with the petrol' job? Autolube was a brilliant system where 2 stroke oil was in a separate tank and a pump slowly bled the oil direct to the main bearings and cylinder walls. Thereafter of course it got into the combustion and came out as smoke as usual. An over rich setting would produce lots of fun and blue smoke - what we call pollution today!

    • @2StrokeSquashie
      @2StrokeSquashie  6 років тому

      Thanks for watching! Yes, the fizzy did have an autolube system later on. I am not sure, but I believe it was around 75/76 with the "m" and "dx" models. Yes, it is a very clever system. I'm not 100% sure on which system the fizzies had because I have not worked on one. I do know that one of the manufacturers ran a system which fed oil direct to the bearings and crank, the idea being that each stroke pulled oil up the barrel with the piston but also lubricated the moving parts further down. I am aware that there was a scavenge system (Suzuki?) Where any unburnt 2 stroke was recycled. Some manufacturers instead mixed the fuel and oil before it entered the barrel, I think something which happened in the carb. I'm not entirely sure on the specifics, but all I know is that there are many variations. All very clever!

      @cedriclynch Рік тому

      The version of the FS1E with separate lubrication injects the oil into the inlet port only, as do all Yamahas with separate lubrication. Suzuki before the late 70s and Kawasaki on some models before the mid 70s used more elaborate systems with direct feed to some of the crankshaft bearings, but later changed to injecting into the inlet port like Yamaha.
      The arrangement of mixing oil with the petrol is not in practice any problem; just find a small screw-top plastic bottle that holds about 200ml (the correct quantity for the amount of petrol you can put into the tank after you run onto reserve) and fill it with 2-stroke oil and carry it with you. When you fill up with petrol, tip the contents of the bottle into the tank first.

    Wow, so I'm not the only bonkers sixteen year old that restored a fs1e and now rides it everyday! :D I totally agree with you, best moped ever made, it eats modern Yamaha twist and go's in a cloud of blue smoke! Mines a 75 popsicle fs1e like yours but painted a more violet colour, im the second owner and its done 6000 miles from new with completely original bottom end (slighlty blew up the top end lol ;) ) my dad doesnt really like it though as he a a Puch m50 Grand Prix back in the day which he thinks is better.... p.s where did you get the exhaust? i want it!

      +Alex Walder Haha that's awesome dude, sounds amazing! It would be awesome to meet up! Ahhh I want to get a grand prix eventually, just because. I hear they were good for 70mph. Pipe was from an autojumble. I needed a new one and loved it, had to have it! Keep an eye open on ebay, they come up from time to time :) Thanks for commenting!

      +2Stroke Squashie I'm in Essex in the Colchester area, not sure where you are but it looks nicer than Essex haha! :p Yeah having 5 gears makes all the difference with the Puch, If I could do one thing to my bike it would be to put a 5 speed box in it with closer gear ratios so you can really get the most from what little power is there. The gears are so widely spread on mine that I quite often come out of the power band and get bogged down but you can't beat a nice Fs1e for looks though

    • @2StrokeSquashie
      @2StrokeSquashie  9 років тому

      Essex is quite a hike for a fizzy from me lol. Yeah I think the 5 speed ones have a bit better pull, Im tempted by that myself to be honest, but there is no point with a bigger bike under a month away. I find mine isnt too bad actually, what sprocket do you have on front? If you drop it one tooth it goes better up hills but you do lose a little top end (5mph or so). Gets there quicker though lol

    • @alexwalder2920
      @alexwalder2920 9 років тому

      2Stroke Squashie It's still on its original sprocket and chain, all we did was re lubricate the chain in a big vat of boiling grease and put it back on as it was still in very good condition as well as the sprocket. It's not bad though to be honest but as I am 6 foot 3 if there is any considerable wind it seems so sluggish! but then when you get a calm day its fantastic lol, what bike you getting next?
