very interesting - I have a similar story. I bought a YM Strat and was disappointed ... one year later I bought a Fender Strat Custom Shop Heavy Relic which is a beautiful guitar. Then I replaced the original pickups with Kloppmann's ... these are unbelievable great. Finally I let scallop the fretboard by a professional guitar builder .... and now I booked your course and I am really happy to get so much information, licks, training and fun .. thanks Tom

LOVE my HS3! The key with hum cancelling pickups is to delete the tone knobs or increase the impedance. Btw, the HS4 is exactly the same as the HS3 but with a vintage stagger for aesthetic purposes. I prefer HS3’s because the magnet stagger is symmetrical. I have HS2’s in the neck and middle which are definitely more sparkly and vintage but they lack the compression and high-mid poke that the HS3’s have. I play at church so the HS2’s are a better fit. Also, the HS3 is basically a DiMarzio FS1 in single coil mode and the HS2 in single coil mode is what Eric Johnson uses in the bridge of his Strat and what Richie Kotzen uses in all three positions of his Strat (a DiMarzio tech confirmed with me that his signature pickguard is just three single coil HS2’s). Those in single coil mode are also quieter than other single coils.
Since the Fury’s are essentially the same as the HS series, you can try wiring them in single coil. They’ll still be quieter than true singles, you’ll actually get MORE output, and you’ll get more sparkle and clairty

@TomShreds You might try deleting the tone knob or trying a different one. I know someone who spent alot of time with yngwie & his setup...i know he said he doesn't use the middle pickup at all and i think he said he doesnt use the tone knobs, theyre just there for looks.

Yup with a 250 YJM speed Vol knob. Once you use it … you’ll probably put it in all your guitars.

I ordered some Warmoth parts (body & neck) and made my own too! I love the SS frets and YJM Fury loaded pickguard. That’s how I know the YJM tone pots are “no-load” pots… I added locking tuners but I went with a white colored graphite nut. A droplet of 3-in-1 oil and it stays in tune even when I reach for the trem bar. Bonus: I mounted the neck using steel machine inserts! I dunno which is my favorite guitar - this Strat or my EBMM Axis.

Pretty sure Yngwie mentioned in his latest interview with Rick Beato that he switched to HS3 pickups very soon after landing in the USA because the FS-1s hummed a lot more with the US 110v 60Hz power than they did back in Sweden. So those early Alcatrazz shows were probably HS3s. I could definitely be wrong about that though.

2010 was the last year that Fender put the Dimarzios in the YJM. The following year saw the Duncans come standard, with those recessed strap pins at some point.

I’ve been using the DiMarzio HS3- dp117 - bridgeand the 217 - neck for over 30 years and found them so much better than the Fury pickups. They tend to give me the Yngwie tone I like from the Alkatraz sound to the 7th sign sound … great pickups .
Also, I really enjoy your channel.

Very cool. I just built a Warmoth strat neck with a Mexican body. I have 3 EMG single coils because I hate being the ground and noise. They are dead quiet and yet sound like single coils . I'm going to put a non fine tuner Floyd on mine, but I installed a graphite nut on it and staggered tuners so no strings trees. So I don't use the trem now, but I will when I have the Floyd put in it with a locking nut. Like Brad Gillis of Ozzy fame and Night Ranger fame. I will eventually use an EMG humbucker in the bridge and EMG single in the neck and no middle because I rarely use a middle pickup. Love EMGs. There's a lot of hate about them, but those people are wrong. They sound and feel great and you're not the ground when you touch the strings and dead quiet and they cut thru a mix great gigging.
I just recently found you. I watch Leon Todd's videos from Perth all the time. He's a great guy.
Thanks so much mate and best regards from South Central Indiana. USA.
    Tim.. ❤

But, bro, that it SUPER COOL how you basically built your own custom guitar to look, feel and sound how you wanted it to. That's actually RAD!!!! RESPECT!!! You own a full fledged TSH model ( Tom "Shreds" H^^^rd). BEST GUITAR TEACHER EVER!!! Happy New Years ( you gotta shred Auld Lang Syne) for us. :)

Cool video, I have been also wanting a YJM strat because of the scalloped frets and the Seymour Duncan YJM Pickups but just cant justify the price with a six screw trem and nickel frets. I have a Mex strat with Texas pickups that I installed a Vega Trem which is soooooo much better than the stock trem and also installed locking tuners. It still goes out of tune sometimes but is much more stable and better playing / sounding over all.
I built an Alder body Quilt maple cap Warmoth Strat with everything I wanted in a HSS config with a JB Duncan in the bridge and a lil 59 Duncan in the neck a German Floyd Rose with a Stone Tone Block that plays and sounds amazing.
Keep up the great work and happy New Year!

Hey Tom, have you tried using a Vega Trem? It's like a Floyd Rose without the need of a locking nut. It can also work with a floating bridge if the guitar is setup right, making it able to bend up and down. 😃

Man, sorry for taking too long. I just saw ghe video. About the strat, if you are into The Seventh Sign style HS-3 tone, a Japanese Yngwie strat is the one. But of you're into let's say... Unleash The Fury HS-3 tone, than an American with HS-3 pickups is just the right one. The sound has slightly different colour. But if we're talking quality here, maybe an American would stand more beating and giging. Nice video. Cheers.

I just finished building a strat of my own. I had a neck & went to warmoth for the body. The quality of the body was ok but needed alot of work to get really nice. The forearm cut wasn't like it should have been. Then the neck didn't fit 😕, so I tried to order a neck from warmoth...they were not easy to deal with for special options and colors, in fact, were not willing to help at all. I ended up buying one from musikraft & the options and quality are fantastic, easy to deal with.

I am not a big fan of the YJM Furys. I got the pickguard and slapped it into my Squier for a total of 850€ but at this point I really want a real Fender Strat with actual single coils but Yngwie's neck. Buying a Fender Player Strat + the neck would cost me 1600 in total, no case, no luthier fee. If I went for a Fender American Performer I would pay 2300 in total. Still no case. That's basically the money for a YJM strat. And it is hard to find a YJM Strat with Dimarzio HS3/4s. It is just a pain in the butt. Maybe jumbo frets of the AM Performer are good enough and the Yosemite coils will do the trick as well.

Alembic basses have been using those for a long time.

    Hi Tom,
I've recently bought a YJM Strat, USA model. Sounds great, feels great, fretwork is superb, it does stay in tune when doing tremolo shenanigans (without locking tuners). It doesn't come with stainless frets, it comes with Dunlop 6000 jumbo frets. One thing that does require some getting used to is that the first string is very close to the edge of the fretboard (it a feature, not a bug :D).
Also, if you can, upgrade to a Fractal unit (FM3, FM9). I assume you are playing on a Line 6 Helix...I used to have the Helix LT, now I'm playing through a FM9. In comparison the Helix sounds darker with less clarity. Fury neck pickup through a Marshall model on a FM9 doesn't sound muddy at all. Now I'm off to get your course :)
    Cheers!
