I was in the same situation of Lisa, I was born in Brooklyn and my parents used to talk to me in Italian I'm their first child and then when I started kindergarten I had difficulties speaking English, it's so funny how many things we have in common, the difference is that my parents moved back in Puglia and I was 18 years old. So my life changed completely I needed to get used to the Italian way of things 😊 I actually felt like I was bounced back and forth, parents always experiment with the first child 🤦🏼♀️
I had same issue with my first born. English is not my first language so I will be speaking bilingual at home a lot with him so that he would also learn my language. But his speaking ability is way behind than his age. His pedia asked if I’m talking to him in multiple language. I said yes , and that where he pointed the problem is that I’m confusing my kid. I’am also first time mom so I believed him and stopped talking to him in my language. I regreted it. Looking forward for more podcast☺️.
Do not stop speaking in your language to your child. The long term benefits of being bilingual far outweigh starting speaking a few months later as a toddler
Who in the family do speak fluent Italian? You seldomly hear the family speak Italian on the show. The one scene I do remember was when the family went to Italy. Buddy Sr. had the pizza making contest and heard Lisa speak in fluent Italian to the waiter. I knew Mauro and Danny, even though he’s not blood family, spoke Italian because they were born there, but who else in the family is fluent?
My granddaughter was raised speaking Spanish and English, but as early as two she would not speak Spanish when I was around because she knew I did not understand. The question is more what is correct when there are people around who will not understand what you are saying. No one is suggesting she never speak Italian to them.
that's not what you are supposed to do. the most recommended method to raise bilingual kids is to ALWAYS speak your language to your child (OPOL, One Parent One Language). why do you want to know what I tell my kids anyway? If it's something others need to know I'll say it in English as well
When you go to a nail salon and the manicurists speak in Vietnamese when they want talk about you or another customer and they think you don’t realize it . That’s rude😬
So sad doctors used to discourage families from raising bilingual children... Being bilingual doesn't cause speech delays, and actually has a lot of benefits
