Right? They literally could have added a Russian nomad, a Chinese person, a Dutch person, or maybe the other sub-ethnic groups in Feudal Japan, or why not other Middle Easterners that would tie it to the other assassins from previous games, etc? There's tons of ways this could have gone, but instead yeah it's always a black guy. They could even still include Yasuke as a character in the game, which would be cool, but weird since the idea of most of these games is to insinuate that the past people had a separate unknown history to us than what we have recorded. Also almost none of the protagonists in these games are white anyway. And a few are women.

Did people really think ubi would have anything remotely authentic, it's as copy and paste as you can get. Assets shared between thousands of Devs and countless studios ensure this.
Another thing that I find curious is that real life kunoichi were basically Marilyn Monroe spies. Basically they slept with men to gather intel for their daimyo. WE ALL KNOW none of that is going to trickle in to this game since the kunoichi already has a man chin & is modeled after Entertainment media kunoichi. The irony? Dead or Alive & King of Fighters have far more realistic depictions of kunoichi than most games since they're portrayed as mostly naked.
If they think Resident Evil 5 can't be re-made because it would be racist for white main character to shoot NPC black zombies in Africa... “When men don’t believe in God, they don’t believe in nothing, they’ll believe in anything.” - G.K. Chesterton (I might not have gotten the quote 100% correct, but the point still stands.)
From a Huge AC FAN: This is way off but you'll see the point I'm gonna make... I've been reading the Bible and the sheer amount of lore, history, poetry, advice, wisdom etc u gain from God's divine inspired works are insane..... And im thinking to myself when developers made these older games the writing was so much better. Like KOTOR, the Witcher etc. It wasn't watered down, it didn't lie to your face and make you feel stupid. It didn't have weak men in leadership too afraid to make tough calls. The stories were bold. AC Valhalla was such a degrading experience because it was written for kids thinkin Norse was cool and smack cool reskins on everything, oh wait let's ADD unicorn horses as paid dlc that has nothing to do with Norse or Vikings just to get more money. but there is so much rich history and intense back stories in Norse. Clearly MISSED opportunity. Also when I went to Italy last year, I stopped at 2 areas in Assassins Creed 2. Old Ubisoft writers told such an amazing story and the architecture in Florence and other small Villas was such an amazing experience to relook up Ezio in AC 2 and be like holy shit i was there! To compare to 20th century, assassin's creed Ezio Trilogy gave us that RAW experience to see how 15th-16th century Italy was during the Templar and beginning renossance period. My point is..... Reading the Bible has taught and revealed to me that mankind has gotten very weak over time. And if you LOVE MONEY over everything aka greed your gonna fail regardless. You might gain some success but your fruits will show how it's not sustainable. Also it says love is gonna grow cold and people are going to be extremely selfish and this is going on today everywhere to the media and how corporations don't treat their employees as a family or with any value. and no matter what people are gonna continue to let you down if their intentions aren't in the right mindset. The more we continue to get technology in the west the dumber and weaker people become and the entertainment shows that. The family dynamics are gone etc. Nothing is written with passion in Ubisoft anymore and like you said they do this to the dumbed down masses. So I don't look forward to this anymore

When playing Assassin's Creed, the player plays an OG ethnic character matching the region. For the recent games they get to play a male or female. Instead of an OG Japanese male in Japan, they went with a named black man from history, who was *never* a samurai. It's bad enough Ubisoft has a trash cashshop, but they inserted a token character for DEI, in a setting the players have been asking for since forever. Is this a distraction for something worse to come?
To be fair, the character of Yasuke was in fact a historical person, a "black man" that did arrive in feudal japan. He was brought by catholic jesuits. He stayed for a time , not long but left an impression on Lorda Oda Nobunaga, who initially thought the man had tattoed his body with ink. Yasuke apparently had some training in japanese by the jesuits. At some point he gained some favor with Lord Nobunaga and was given the duty of being a sword bearer. Eventually in a military scrimmage , Nobunaga was killed and the left alive were captured by his enemies. They didnt kill this black man, but they ordered him back home. To be clear, there is no historical record of him becoming a samurai or any accounts of him engaging in any of the battles. The Japanese later in time , added this main to a wide collection of notable figures in japanese history , and made folklore about him, and he got a legendary status. So all the romanticized depictions of him were just fantasy depictions , similar to the West and its Paul Bunyon, or Johnny Appleseed . The Yasuke character took on a life of its own and has been showcased in various japanese art and pop culture through the ages. As a comparison, Japans most famous folklore character is the famous Goemon. He was like Japans own version of Robin Hood. He too was a historical person, but his legend grew and many many many stories, movies , cartoons and video games have been made that great exagerrate the person of Goemon. He became the biggest legend in Japan, who stole gold from the rich and gave it to the poor. Never do the folklore mention of the actual historcial fact of Goemon, who was evnetually caught and literally BOILED ALIVE with his own son.
Yasuke is the typical NPC type character, who'll give you some side missions. Definitely not protagonist material. How does a 6 ft Black man blend into a crowd? Or are they going to go AC Odyssey and turn 35% of the NPCs Black? And he was not a samurai, just a retainer. Nobunaga's walking, breathing accessory. Like the so-called chamber Moors of the European royal courts.
Why when I want to find real opinions on the game the first thing is people complaining about it a black guy in the game and bring out these wiki articles that can be altered by ANYBODY. Woke this and Woke that and zero idea about the protagonist story. There will be an Asian protagonist in the game but that what it is a game. If you want to talk about the game talk about how there wasn't really any gameplay or why there making movie cutscenes rather than what would really be in the game. No, you would rather bring up Afro Samurai to appear as though you not trying to say what is really on your mind. It does come back down to racism which at this point is very ignorant because even though it is an Assassin's Creed game which everyone knows lightly touches on historical accuracy you still want to claim is because they are showing that the company does not care about a culture of the game setting. But here the thing Japanese historians helped with the game development and many Japanese people were well aware of Yasuke existence for years. Rather than being another form of hate try to do your research before opening your uneducated mouth. Forget cinematic trailers, they’re supposed to give an idea of what the games will be like, but that’s not always what we get. I know Naoe will be the one who’s more vulnerable in combat and will use her environment around her to hide and sneak pat enemies, using her grappling hook to climb walls, while Yasuke most likely will enter castles through the front gate.
@@bugs1285 well if you have played all of them then you would know you choose one or the other. There has never been an AC game where you play both characters simultaneously. So in that case if you chose Yasuke you would have to complete the assassinations with him not the Shinobi.

These are not my words, this is what is written on her university page. She wrote a book called 'Tales of Idolized Boys: Male-Male Love in Medieval Japanese Buddhist Narratives'. Kinda funny when people and the claimed to be "Japanese" people at ONLINE get upset about Yasuke depiction as a samurai when there are books such as "Kuro-suke", authored by a native Japanese Kurusu Yoshio that was published in 1968 or "Yasuke: The True Story of the Legendary African Samurai" published in 2019, authored by Thomas Lockley, an Associate Professor at Nihon University College of Law in Tokyo, where he teaches courses about the international and multicultural history of Japan and East Asia along with Geoffrey Girard, also an author and teaches about nonfiction, thrillers, historicals, and speculative fiction. Animes such as "Yasuke", a Japanese-American original net animation (ONA) series and animated by Japanese own animation studio MAPPA aired in 2021. Or games such as "Nioh 2" or "Samurai Warriors 5" developed by Japanese own Koei Tecma and released in 2020 and 2021 respectably; In which ALL of them depicted Yasuke as a Samurai either as an MC, secondary character or NPC and was released BEFORE AC Shadows but NOBODY get upset about those materials at all... 😅😅😅 There's is a representative for Japan in AC Shadows, and her name is Naoe, the other main character, a fictional Ninjutsu character that has a father who is actually a real historical person. If AC Shadows considered as "wokeness" Or even "racist", then I can say the same thing about AC Black Flag. Can I? Because the Caribbean is home to an extraordinary mix of cultures, unique history and heritage since the area has islands, coast lines and would be countries spread around it. There are many real life person or even legendary ones who are originated and operated in those area. We could have a man who called himself Black Caesar as the main character, a pirate captain who occasionally ran with Blackbeard, or Henri Caesar, a Haitian pirate captain who raided small villages and lone vessels near Cuba and the Bahamas along with Spanish ships for nearly a decade. And then there's Diego el Mulato Martín, a former slave from Havana, Cuba, who picked up pirate's trade and terrorized the Gulf of Mexico in the 1630s. Why not Andresote? The son of an indigenous mother and African father and the leader of some runaway slaves and Indians; who plundered, murdered along the coast of Venezuela and beyond during the era of Spanish colonial slavery. Diego Grillo, a pirate made his base on Tortuga, an island near Haiti, who once made an engagement in the Old Bahama Channel where he defeated three armed ships that attempted to capture him and killed all the Spaniards in the crew. Maybe Peter Cloise, a former slave, became a pirate after Edward Davis took him from his owner in 1679. They became close friends and went pirating in the Caribbean and along South America’s Pacific coast? But instead we get a white guy name Edward Kenway. Why a pure construct character? And I didn't saw people or even the Carribeans ruffled their feathers when Ubisoft introduced Edward Kenway as the main protagonist in AC Black Flag way back in 2013... And here I thought AC is a series that painted itself as FICTIONAL action/role playing game based on historical events from the get go.
We had already a black protagonists in assassins creed. Adewale from ac 4 black flag. His own dlc expansion pack. Freedom cry. Where he accidentally crashes into Saint domingue. Haiti. And must deal with delivering an artifact while dealing with some social issues of the era. Slavery of the blacks in the island of Hispaniola. Also Aveline a black French woman. From AC Liberation. Set in French era New Orleans. Yes. 1700s Louisiana.
the problem with ancient history is the ambiguity and lack/limited information, the problem with modern day history is the loads of misinformation. i would argue that its fine to be creative with the ambiguity of Yasuke for a fantasy game, but that is all it is.
That's what they explained in one of their videos. The lack of information around Yasuke allows them for creativity on the fictional part of Assassin's Creed.
Yeah there was a dark skinned guy named yasuke but weather he was African Indian Polynesian etc who knows....ther is no proof he was African or anything other than dark skinned....
Because they're just using "black representation" as a front to deflect criticism of the changes. We black people know this. Dr. Who is gay, "Juliet" is ugly (aka anti-femininity), and this Yasuke character will ultimately follow the female assassin's lead (aka feminism).
A game based in Japan with samurai, should never have had the main lead a black guy, even if he was a real person. Its just wrong and bad for representation for asia. They should have had Yasuke as a Easter egg, an extra character but not the main character!
Let alone the guy he's based on for the love of God was considered to be Nobunaga's pet! For all sakes and purposes, that's all what that guy really was!
@@riboflavinfolate3964 I've read enough of japanese comments to know that theyre not behind it either. The ratio of likes/dislikes on the japanese trailer is a good indicator as well.
I Slightly disagree it shouldn’t be an AC game yes but there’s nothing wrong with making a yasuke game about his story. The problem here is that it’s AC and suppose to be about the creed and events in history in the area not Yasuke.
As a Greek man I actually got really annoyed at AC Odyssey, the game is super woke, they made Greek people look gypsy/north african, they threw a shit ton of homo relationships in it while most ancient city-states actually prohibited such relationships you can look into the laws of Solon for more information, also the main character of the game was a spartan warrior woman??? that also wasn't a thing.
Yasuke was given a short wakizashi (which is for seppuku) and not a warrior's katana or odachi. He was only there for three years, surrendered to Samanosuke Akeshi without a fight, and was deported to India. He was no Samurai. This is more historical theft. Since his real name and where he's from are unknown, it's entirely possible and more likely that he was a dark Indian or Polynesian.
Yeah, when I heard he was in Japan for barely three years, I realized how much Ubisoft really picked him. It wasn't even just picking a certain person's lifetime, they specifically made it occur in those three years. Years that I heard were barely interesting or important for Japan's history. Like, what?
All this revisionist history the japanese themselves have their own historical records regarding the man. He was a member of the inner court and was tasked with delivering Nobunagas head safely through the chaos to his son. He fought alongside Nobunagas son as a well. When they fell others were killed butbhe was spared for not being japanese so suicide wasnt required. He was released to the jesuit missionaries who brought him as an educated slave for muscle since by japanese law the foriegners couldnt have weaponsnor bodyguards. Recorded history of him comes to an end when he was returned to the missionary. He was indeed african and purchaded slave educated by the mission.
And described as dark skin. I am still looking for something in the historical record that can verify he was even African. The social divisions between lighter and darker skin people in India is well documented and centuries old. So as far as I can tell it’s still quite possible he was Indian and not African.
@@DoamBot No one knows if he was a slave or not. What is known definitively is that Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579 with an Italian Jesuit missionary, Alessandro Valignano,
Retainers were usually samurai who provided services, especially military so saying he wasn't a samurai is being disingenuous. I won't disagree this is pandering though.
Yasuke was a character in Nioh; a samurai game by team ninja (ninja gaiden devs) that deals with a white Irish Samurai (William) as the protagonist in the first game. The Yasuke was one of Nobunaga’s guards (so samurai) in the second game. And it didn’t come off woke in either case. The Nioh games take Japanese history and basically inserts fantastical elements like yokai and stuff into it. They’re pretty niche games. So, they fly under the ”let’s make everything political” radar. But I’m saying all this to say; you can tell this story without going full woke. And it’s interesting IMO. Yasuke was one of the more interesting characters in Nioh 2. It’s honestly a great 2 games. I think in Nioh Nobunaga recruited him from missionaries and gave him the name Yasuke and made him one of his retainers because he was impressed with his sheer stature. Others came to know him as the Obsidian Samurai. And as Nobunaga’s attendant, he was a badguy in the Nioh games. But still interesting character
Nioh were pretty fun games. Hard as hell though. I liked how they had all those historical Japanese figures in there for you to fight and stuff. I wish more games could do stuff like that, without going full woketard though. Yasuke in AC ain’t gonna be nothing like Yasuke in Nioh. For one, he’s a good guy in AC. In Nioh, he was attendant to an evil warlord. Ubisoft ain’t gonna let the only black samurai be a badguy lol.
Yes, base comment. Some people need to learn that not every battle is worth fighting; I feel this is one of those times. Emotions run deep on both sides and as a result both sides are in danger of being hoisted by their own petard.
I agree that it may not be instantly woke to tell the story of Yasuke. I didn't play Nioh, but I know Team Ninja are Japanese developers. And they aren't woke. These are the people behind Dead of Alive Extreme Beach Volleyball lol. They told the story how they wanted to tell it. the idea of telling that story in itself isn't woke. buuuuut... ubisoft... I don't trust them lol. I will wait and see. There is a difference between how Japanese developers tend to tell stories like this vs how Western devs tend to.
A guard wasn't necessarily a samurai either. All retainers werent samurai. Japanese historical accounts never refer to him as "bushi" only ever as "koshou". The difference that you've missed or intentionally ignored is that historical accounts DO cover how and why williams was granted the title of Bushi.

Did people really think ubi would have anything remotely authentic, it's as copy and paste as you can get. Assets shared between thousands of Devs and countless studios ensure this.
Their opinions should be respected and taken into consideration by Ubisoft.
Samurai had a tradition of butt screwing their pages (since women aren't allowed on the battlefield.). Guess what Yasuke was? A page, lol!
Then this game should be called out for culture appropriation and being racist too, for black protagonist slaughtering samurais in Japan!!!

This is way off but you'll see the point I'm gonna make...

There's is a representative for Japan in AC Shadows, and her name is Naoe, the other main character, a fictional Ninjutsu character that has a father who is actually a real historical person.

A game based in Japan with samurai, should never have had the main lead a black guy, even if he was a real person. Its just wrong and bad for representation for asia. They should have had Yasuke as a Easter egg, an extra character but not the main character!
When if comes to "disrespecting a culture" it would be prudent to let the people of said culture speak for themselves. Stop the "white knight" BS.
@@DeshraD And I respect their opinion. I hope UBISOFT listens to them and makes changes necessary to respect THEIR history.
Wakizashi wasn't used for Seppuku. Tanto's were used for Seppuku. 🤦♂
What is known definitively is that Yasuke arrived in Japan in 1579 with an Italian Jesuit missionary, Alessandro Valignano,
They even pissed off the Japanese people. That's insane.
Not all the japanese people theres a difference
@@gabrielmartinez787 just most of the japanese gamers. Which is enough.
@@gabrielmartinez787 all Japanese people who know their history. Shut up kid.
Retainers were usually samurai who provided services, especially military so saying he wasn't a samurai is being disingenuous. I won't disagree this is pandering though.
I'm not giving Ubisoft any money
Am I the only one who's upset about the pricing of the game, it's fucking nuts.
I wish the movie to nioh was made it was written by Akira Kurosawa before he passed.
A guard wasn't necessarily a samurai either. All retainers werent samurai. Japanese historical accounts never refer to him as "bushi" only ever as "koshou". The difference that you've missed or intentionally ignored is that historical accounts DO cover how and why williams was granted the title of Bushi.
Sweet Baby Inc has their fingerprints all over this.
Assassin’s Creed hasn’t been good since the Desmond Miles AC games. Which doesn’t surprise me they just ruined the franchise by going the SJW route. Lol
Black Flag was awesome and I heard Rogue was really good. So I might play that at some point.
@@n1bleachfreak Rogue is kinda just a discount Black Flag, ngl, but you might enjoy it. It's at least worth it to try it out

Ubi lost the plot long ago. An assassin that stands out in ANY crowd in the country? Oh yeah, let's go that way.
