Peak of the Incan Empire

- The Inca built an empire that if placed over the Old World would stretch from St. Petersburg to Cairo. They transformed a hostile landscape into an agricultural marvel and developed a culture with such respect for the dead that corpses were engaging in politics decades afterlife had left them. In this video, we will look at how the Inca adapted to their environment and became what the historians called “the most impressive empire builders of their day.” We will discuss the economic and spiritual life of the Incan civilization before the arrival of the Spaniards.

Really got me curious about how they would have developed if they had more time...
I'd be pretty interested myself too :-D
They were just undeveloped people.
@@eduardogutierrez4698 So true, they clearly were fucking ingenious, they did amazing things with what they had. Usually people think only europeans cultures are "civilized" or "advanced" but truly people doesn't any idea how alienated they are.
@@eduardogutierrez4698 One of the reasons their empire died quickly is because of strange tradition of talking, clothing, feeding the dead.
@@isaiahalvarado8617 ok?
A most excellent take on one of the most fascinating of all human cultures.
Cogito is extremely good. :-)

I love you.
Maxwell Alexander I think they would appreciate a subscribe
Um well I guess you could do that, but you could always just use the subscribe button like a normal person xD
As usual, you do you. :-) we appreciate everything that we are getting from you guys.

Just kidding
I have trouble remembering which account of mine is actually subscribed, I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to subscribe with every account LOL
I found it interesting how the Inca Empire was able to become prosperous in their agriculture as well as their architecture in such an unfavorable climate and landscape. I also found it interesting how people in need, such as the elders, the sick, and others were able to gain help from others in order to survive.
I'v read many great books on the Inca Empire, but it is truly these videos that have brought this fascinating civilization to life. Well done with the animations. Keep it up!
Thank you, we are glad that you guys enjoyed this video. There will be more!
Really fascinating how they functioned without currency in so many different micro-environments at every altitude. Interesting how several cultures living at high altitude highly venerate their dead. Tibetan and Nepali people also mummify their dead, both countries have ancient tombs.
Luis good point. That brings Ancient Egypt in as well.
Interesting point. That is an environmental phenomenon that allows mountainous cultures to hold onto their dead. I agree that holding onto a corpse in the jungles of the Congo or the Amazon wouldn't work so well!
Natural environment, geography and cimate shape civilizations. That's why high altitude civilizations have these things in common.
@@talknight2 Ancient Egypt wasn't a mountainous civilization mate
@@miguelpereira9859 But they mummified and venerated the dead and have many ancient tombs
Well that was awesome. 392km in a day! Bet Alexander and the Diadochi wished they could have done that!
Yeah, I guess with that level of communication the empire could have remained intact.
@@KingsandGenerals Nah, maybe all of Alexander's generals and their descendants all bicker with one another over long distances
The way the incas use all those different altitudes to develop agriculture and the fact that they made those warehouses to store all those things that will come in handy when is needed is very impressive. Not allowing the next emperor to have access to the wealth that was already gathered was a wrong move in my opinion because no matter how much you conquer and build, the foundation of the empire will never be solid and, as you said, that together with all those "PachaCorp" (I like that) and the spanish intervention in their affairs brought the downfall of the Inca Empire.
But did they have groove
I heard their groove was quite new

As a partial descendant of the Incan empire, I congratulate you on your videos. It was about time somebody made proper videos covering this amazing, very interesting, particular and rare civilization. I love my Andes mountains and the lack of heavy rain (or rain) in this area of the world. Your videos are great!!
Thanks for watching. Happy to hear you enjoyed it
FANTASTIC video, I had absolutely no idea about any of this, it felt like first learning history as a kid
Thank you for watching :)
Thats great to hear :D Really happy you enjoyed it.
I love it! As you said, Cogito is a rockstar.
Very well narrated and interesting information that is carefully welded to produce a good story in the given time frame of the video. What I like the most, compared to the Aztecs, is that the jokes are being tuned down.
Thank you :)
Thanks, Happy you enjoyed it and all the improvements we're trying to make. The next video will be even better :D
I believed the Incas made a successfully planned economy that contributed to the social wealth in Incan society. They adapted to the Andres Mountains really well, using the resources they found efficiently. Lastly, having collective labor as their way of paying taxes seemed like a fair system to me.
I think it’s interesting how their taxes were paid in labor. They’re delivery system is very interesting as well. It’s crazy how things were delivered so fast with chasquis and tambos. It makes sense though. When at Machu Pichu, I noticed that they also had terraces but they didn’t have crops or anything. It was just grass.
They had potatoes, quinoa, and many other crops.
At 4:47 at the left in the golden armor is Inez De Zuarez. Mistress of conqueror Pedro De Valdivia.
At the siege of santiago carried by chilean natives (a branch of the mapuches) led by Tucapel she fought alongside the men and orderer and supposedly she severed the heads of several native leaders that were hostages. Then she proceeded to order a cavalry charge to rout the demoralized attackers.
Btw Tucapel it is said to have an Inca education, he was taken into the Cuzco court in his youth since the valley of today's Santiago (Chile) was under Inca influence.
At 90 minutes north and west of Santiago there is a city today that held it's native name, Limache meaning people of Lima (limaq as the peruvian natives called today's capital of Peru)
The expansionist Inca's attempts of annexing south of Chile were stopped when Mapuches defeated them at the river Bio Bio. There is even a road today that crosses the Chilean- Argentinian border called road of the Inca wich was build in the same path the Inca took to the mountains (they build a temple there, at the level of santiago de Chile at the Andes)
Kings and Generals never disappoints!
Thank you for watching :)

Chuños are amazing. They are the size of a cherry tomato, but you eat one and it's like eating an entire potato. So you eat two or three little chuños and you completely full. It's very easy to transport and it can last for months. It's a great source of nourishment for hard times and living at high altitude!
Another fascinating video! The Inca are by far the most interesting civilization you've covered here so far.

This is stellar!
I love these series about he the new world!
Keep em coming!
The fact that the Incas were sophisticated enough to create a complex government structure that most resembles socialism is fascinating. They really cared about the wellbeing of their people and helped those in need unlike many governments in modern society. I also see similar characteristics of their empire to other ancient empires. For instance, the masonry walls were also utilized in roman architecture and mummification was also present in many other societies all around the world. I'm curious to know the anthropological stand point of these similarities and connections?
I really enjoy your videos

It really makes you think differently we are mostly used in the empires around the Mediterranean and specifically the Roman . The style of governing is very different and intriguing to be honest. It is also hard to imagine an empire without currency yet we can see its success . Great video and truly an eye opener keep up the good work.
Thank you for watching :)
I love your videos, the Inca are one of my favorite empires😀

Superb video. Best of luck !!

Keep up the great work, this is awesome.

This video is damn cool. Geography plays a large part in a civilisation's development. I suspect that the mountainous terrain, and stormy waters might have contributed to the lack of naval technology, water transportation (if the terrain was manageable for canal work, easy access to urban centres and coast hugging maritime trade).
Which we see in North America with goods being traded up and down north america by canoes.
Very good video and amazing canal, I also want to add that the Incas were navigators, since they arrived in Polynesia and traded. Greetings from Chile.
Thank you for watching!
wow, wow, wow ¿Llegaron a la polinesia? joder xD realmente deberia leer mas a fondo los textos que mis profesores de la facultad me dejan
Thank you so much for this video.

This channel is amazing. keep up the Great work.
Planning to, thanks!
It is interesting to know the type of weather the Incas had to live in because to us these days we would not be able to withstand those types of weather conditions. Even though the Incas had to live in those types of weather conditions they still managed to keep their city and crops growing. It is also interesting to know how they lived their daily lives and how they did not use any money. Instead the the emperor or the ruler shared with them anything they needed and they only had to repay what they had gotten with work. I truly believe that the Inca civilization was very smart and talented because they could build different structures way better and with little resources than how we do now.
Great video K&G and Cogito!
His old style was cool, but this is more epic. I miss him humor though...
Thanks for watching, I'm glad you find it more epic :D

A very well done video, I quite enjoyed it. I am excited about the Mayan videos, however, I wonder how it will be done: there are many varieties of Mayan culture and language. I am also interested in what 'collapse' theory/theories will be discussed in the video.
Thanks! Yes, the Maya episodes will be very interesting.
I am very excited about the Maya episodes. Honestly there is so much to talk about with the Maya :D
Excellent video.
great video, thanks!
Thank you for watching! :-)
The Incas’ greatest achievement and gift to the world is potatoes 🥔.
That was probably domesticated a couples thousand years before the Incas :v
Also don't forget about quinoa
Also llamas alpacas and guinea pigs!
Agree, potatoes are a super food, and delicious
holy shit I had no idea incas created potatoes
It was so fascinating that it seems like they had a type of system that reminds me of unemployment and such, when one was sick, disabled, elderly, or widowed they would be taken care of. Their land was taken care of and they would still get their goods taken to them, I see why they would do so after learning about their strong respect and connection with the after life / the dead.
Excellent episode, the music is quite pleasant reminds me of the snappy number played by one of the Inca in the film Aguirre wrath of god
Thank you for watching :)
Yes, I enjoy this series. Thanks for asking.
Glad to hear! :-)
Hello from Romania!
Hello!
Wow they were truly an amazing culture :o
Thanks for watching!
the detail, the research.. im in someways historian by hobby, but even at my collection of knowledge, this video series has fill an inmense gap.. thank you
Thank you for watching. There will be 2 more videos in the series about the Incas.
So this is the Kings part of the Kings and General's channel. I love it.
I just love even more this chanel after this inca videos. Plz, still doing the history about no well knowing stuffs.
One thema I belive will be amazing in your channel is the war of latin america indepence. I saw a lot of video about that, but never one who focus in generals movements and warfare.
We have this series in mind. Not sure when though. But we will cover this.
perhaps there arent many 'records' available seeing as how latin america was always plagued by corruption following colonization of the continent. much of these would have been lost over the years.
S13StevenM, don't be a racist person, since writing arrived in the Americas everything was recorded. We even have recorded about stuffs before the knowledge of write, as the Inca history in this video (that because some spanishs guys just write everything they can around the year 1520).
And the independence war of latin america is the most important stuffs in almost all countries here. Venezuela/Colombia forget Simon Bolivar or Argentina forget SanMartin is so unlikely as USA forget George Washington...
Ps. If helps, and if you can understand spanish, here is a link to a Argentinian channel about they own history:
www.zamba.pakapaka.gob.ar/
Gabriel Fagundes my father is Peruvian my mother is Spaniard. i look more 'native' than Caucasian. this was simply an honest unbiased guess on my part. much of what we know of the Incas is because of archaeological evidence, its true there are recorded/written history made by the Spaniards but they risk being 'biased'. other sources are stories past down from generation to generation.
i feel a little insulted at being labeled as racist by simply asking a question and injecting an opinion. it seems its true what they say about latin americans....too thin skinned, too easily insulted, and still resenting the 'white' man.
grow up.
If you are half native-american don't mean you are less racist, black people, 4example, can be racist against other black people.
Of course we know some things by an archaeological way, but we know more stuffs than the archaeology can tell to us, 4example, we know the name of the first inca emperor and much about his history, and if we remember the inca empire hasn't a write system. For lucky, when the write system arrive in Americas around 1520 the spanish can take note of everything they can, and that's include the inca oral tradition.
if you think that our people (cause now I know you are also someone of SouthAmerica) can't record our own history because a bit of corruption, sorry to tell to you, but you are a racist, and the worst kind of racist, the racist who hate your own people (and I know your kind of people, I'm brazilian and I know thousand of brazilians who just hate the brazilian people, I guess this felling is more usual in Latin America unfortunately)
Excellent use of the Metal Gear Solid sound effect.
Thanks!
Great job!
Nice idea with the wooden table backround and this farm systems are interesting :)
Yeah, Cogito created a great video. :-)
Kings and Generals who is Cogito? :D
I'm so happy this exist
:-) Thank you for watching, Cogito is really great.
Bronx New York here.. thank you so much.. I learn new things about the Incan Empire I hadn't known.. you mentioned the Possibility system which I've never heard of.. you mentioned the treachery in the competing house ..would like to know more.... THANK YOU GUYS YOU'RE THE BEST!!!!
Thank you for watching :)
There is a museum in I think Brooklyn with the famous sapa inca paintings and more. Just so you know.
Very fascinating culture. Great video guys. I wish I had learnt more about the Inca before going to Cuzco.
Great storytelling!!!
3:00 "entirely without money" *soviet anthem plays quietly* , 3:07 "controlled by the central incan state" *soviet anthem plays louder* , 3:10 "each citizen ... contributed" *soviet anthem ear rape* , "each citizen received" *soviet anthem stops*
I haven't read the Communist Manifesto, but I think that the description of the Incan lifestyle is what Marx had in mind...but his ideals were taken over and misrepresented in the "Communist" countries.
Bingo. Bolshevism and Leninism have dick all to do with Marx's philosophy, and everything to do with autocracy, deception and self-enrichment.
@@Crimethoughtfull Expect the Inca had a caste system with limited social mobility. Heretical monarchy/oligarchy is the antithesis of Marxism.
"To each according to their need" is part of a typical socialist slogan after all.
Potatoes
In Cuzco there are buildings and structures that seem to pre-date Incan construction. What is your opinion on possible megalithic construction in the same area?
These are inca buildings. Before them, Cusco was a marsh.
This is so cool!
Great video. I love watching history videos especially those related to world history, and Latin American history is one of the most deliberately ignored topics. Once again thanks for your effort.
Is this accurate. I'm playing a historically accurate Incan Empire playthrough in EU4. How come you don't mention the Incan - Scottish Brazil war of 1674?
I still don't think you will mention the famed Scottish Brazil- Incan war no matter how many episode you do.
Hahaha
I'm sorry. I think you mean the Persian Colombia-Inca War of 1710
Just taking out Brazil now? Fam you should be in Paris by 1674! :P
I wish I knew how to play that game...
I love these videos. The reason that not only they go in-depth but describe an isolated empire that was equal or slightly better than the Roman Empire. They made arable land out of rocks and used basic tools to bore through mountains. I love the details seriously
Wow, good work.
Must admit it. This is some high level engineering and city planning.
So Fascinating!
Thank you for your Incan videos
More on the way!
8:26 So they had an army of ZOMBIES protecting them...
Jokes aside, very interesting.
:-) Thanks for watching!
i love thsi video so much i watch it everyday
Great vídeo!

Return of Devin, great job fellas! Didn't the Incas have many silver mines that helped to make the empire wealthy
They probably traded silver to outsiders for other goods rather than circulating it through their empire.
If they literally didn't have money in their system then what would they have done with gold or silver? Maybe jewelry and other luxury stuff. Once the Europeans arrived the Incas and other native peoples of Americas couldn't comprehend the white man's desire for gold and land. For example the North American natives didn't have the concept of 'owning land' since the land was actually above men themselves, and animals were considered as 'brothers' of some sort.
Silver doesn't create wealth. Wealth is created through the production of useful goods and materials, not through the collection of gold and silver, something the Spanish learned the hard way.
+Hackedideal That's complete nonsense. Land is farmed for food. Therefore, land is valuable. Do you honestly expect anyone to believe the Indigenous peoples of the Americas were too stupid to understand this?
They would not have understood the desire for gold because they had a poorly developed and nonexistent monetary system.
They had their own myths and I believe that gold and silver were used in religious ceremonies. They called gold 'sweat of the sun' and silver 'tears of the moon'...
